Madeline, In the far northwest corner of Amenia, there was an early settlement of three log houses fairly close together that was rather satirically referred to as "The City", later called Smithfield because of the church. A Congregational church was established there in the 1740's, later became Presbyterian, and its records have been published by Art Kelly as Smithfield Presbyterian Church. Like most of the Congregational churches in the eastern part of the county, it was hard to keep a settled minister, so records are sparse. For Smithfield Presbyterian, it is definitely a good news/bad news situation for you - they did have a settled minister at the church from 1775-1782, but the records are lost, possibly burned in a fire. Marriage records, as far as I know, don't start until 1835. I think 1787 may be the earliest records available, which would be lists of communicants or church members.
