Bailey, a shoemaker, was born, according to one record, in Dutchess County, NY circa 1819-20. He married Lucy Alverson (1824-1903), a dau of Andrew Alverson (b 1799ca.) and Hannah Morehouse (b 1800ca.). William and Lucy were the parents to 8 children: 6 girls and 2 boys, born between 1845 and 1860, the earliest in Litchfield Co., CT; the latter in Dutchess Co. The last known record of William P. Bailey is dated December, 1864, when he was dropped from the military rolls of the Fourth Congressional District for "misenrollment". His disappearance after that date, and the dissolution of his family is, according to family lore, associated with his becoming a "substitute" soldier during the Civil War.
