Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.dutchess/9743/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My mother's full name is Ernestine Jennifer Washington (nee. Acker). Her father's name is Ernest Acker (surnames Acker, Crump) and her mother's maiden name was Jean Hawkins (surnames Hawkins, Robinson) These four surnames are all here in Baltimore, although they all didn't originate here. I was browsing around and came across Gino's and other inquiries about the Crumps of North Carolina. I've also included information on the Acker side of the family since that name has been prevalent with MY direct ancestry. I've included here some family history in case any of this sounds similar to anyone else's "family stories". Please note that unless I indicate otherwise, most of this information has been verified through court documents, land sale receipts, birth and death certificates, funeral obituaries and the 1930 Census. I will provide birth and death dates at the end of this thread unless it pertains to the information given. Well here goes! According to my grandfather Ernest Acker, his maternal grandfather, Robert Crump, was born in Albermarle, N.C. His parents were Solomon Crump and Ann Taper (According to my great-grandmother, either Ann or her mother was caucasian). I haven't had a chance to verify Solomon and Ann's dates and locations. My grandfather states that they were from Albermarle, N.C. They had at least two, possibly more children, Uncle Atts(?) (who had 6 children himself-we have pictures!) and Robert Crump, both born in Albermarle. I was also told that Solomon bootlegged corn liquor for a living. This is not surprising, since his son, Robert did the same thing. Robert Crump (aged 22) married Lillie Colson (aged 19) December 27, 1906 in Cottonville, Stanly County, N.C. and had two children, Vera Mae and Nathaniel Sr. Lillie seems to have disappeared early on. We don't know what happened to her, only that according to the 1930 census for Fallowfield, Washington County, Pennsylvania, he remarried at ! the ages of 36 (may be written incorrectly by the Enumerator of the document; won't know until I can verify it) and at 43 to Virginia, 24 years old. I will start to verify Lillie's whereabouts soon. During his early years, Robert owned land in Norwood, N.C. He owned a hotel, a house of ill-repute, and a gambling hall on this property. Eventually he got out of it and began working as a laboror. As a result, he traveled back and forth throughout the states of North and South Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia (where my grandfather was born), and Pennsylvania. Vera Mae married John Henry Acker and had two sons. Her firstborn, Haywood L.Acker, died in infancy of diphtheria in Pennsylvania. Robert Crump eventually began working for Bethlehem Steel. According to the census for Pennsylvania, the name of the labor camp in which they lived was the Steam Railroad Laboror Camp. While there, John H. Acker was incarcerated at the state peneteniary for the murder of Bill Butler (convicted in 1937 or 1938). About 3 months afterwards, their labor camp was forcibly disbanded by the Klu Klux Klan and ran out of Pennsylvania. Apparently, the locals didn't like the drinking (provided by Robert, more than likely), loud noises, and partying that was going on late at night. Nathaniel fled to New Jersey. Robert took Vera Mae and her younger son, Ernest, and fled to Baltimore. All stayed at these locations until their deaths. Vera finalized her divorce from her husband September 9, 1943 and married John Stevenson very soon thereafter (he's orig. from S! outh Carolina). They met at the labor camp and he is listed 4 names under Nathaniel Crump's in the 1930 Census. Robert Crump worked for Sparrow's Point here in Baltimore, a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel of Pennsylvania, until he retired. My grandfather, Ernest Acker, married Jean Hawkins on August 18, 1949. Five of their seven children, my mother being the oldest, are still living today (the youngest twin died in 1995, age 37, and a brother, several years later). Okay! Here are everybody's dates: Solomon Crump, Ann Taper, dates for both are unknown Robert Crump (b. 8/6/1884-d.8/1966)married Lillie Colson (b. 1887?-d.?), 2 children, Vera Mae Crump and Nathaniel Crump. Vera Mae Crump (b.3/16/1909-d.4/14/2002) married John Henry Acker. Had two children, the oldest dying of either diphtheria or dysentry (severe dehydration, vomiting, diahrea, fever, etc. maybe from these symptoms, someone can figure out what it was). Youngest is Ernest Acker (see below). She finalized her divorce (9/4/1943, Baltimore City) and remarried John Stevenson (b.4/10/1908-d.3/16/1976). No children. Nathaniel Crump Sr. (b.10/10/1911-d.3/8/1994) married Grace Hodges (b.12/17/1917-d.10/26/1974). Had 6 children, all still living in both New Jersey and in New York with children of their own. Ernest Acker, Vera's younger child (b.6/11/1931) was born in Hawksnest, Fayette County, West Virginia. The family did a LOT of migration at this time. locations included Charleston, W.Va., Dublin Va, North and South Carolinas, Virginia, etc. They went wherever work was before they settled again in Pennsylvania for a while. They fled to Baltimore in 1937, Ernest met my grandmother, Jean Hawkins (b.3/31/1932-d.3/24/2002)) and had seven children, five of whom are still alive today with their own children (the deceased twin-aged 37 had one daughter; the deceased brother had none). They married 8/18/1949 in Baltimore City. Their oldest child is my mother, Ernestine Jennifer Acker (b.11/21/1948). She married George Melvin Washington (5/20/1944) on December 27, 1966. I, Trina Lanell Washington, was born 10/28/1968. I have two children (aged 17 yrs old and 2yrs old) and two sisters. At the time of my great-grandmother Ma Vera's (or Mama Vera, we called her both) death, she had about 12 great-grandchildren and 11 GREAT-GREAT grandchildren! What can I say? My family just believes in having our children early and in numbers! I hope that this helps somewhat. This isn't even HALF of what I have. If you are interested in the other surnames of my mother's family or unmentioned siblings, PLEASE email me at either cravin_wallace@yahoo.com or at twashi2@hotmail.com and maybe we can swap notes. If ANYONE has ANY information on Solomon Crump, Ann Taper or Lillie Colson, DEFINITELY email me. I don't believe that any of our Crumps are descendents of slaves, although I may be wrong. I won't know until I can get more info on these three people and their parents and grandparents. In the meantime...Happy Hunting! FYI- it's stated that a certain famous singer, Stephanie Mills, is distantly related to our branch of the Crumps through Robert's brother Uncle Atts Crump of Albermarle, N.C. She is decended through one of his 6 children (remember! we have pictures of a few of them!). I had spoken with her briefly a few years ago, and she did also believe that we are all related. The New Jersey Crumps are going to try and verify this at that particular branch's next yearly family reunion. I'll post if I find out any more info. TTFN! (Ta-ta-for-now! for all of you tigger fans!) :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
