I am doing a family genealogy project for my schools English class. I am looking for information on my great grandmother and great grandfathers side of my family. My great grandmother is Cathrine Parsons. I know that her mothers name is Sabina O'Hara, but that is all I know about her. My Great grandfather is Alonzo Hoag. I have not found out anything about him besides the fact that he was born in 1917 and died in 2002. His father was Charles Hoag and his mother was Louise Jenks. 3. Hi Robin, Mary Ann brought up an important point. Records in New York can be tricky. The County Surrogate Court has land and death records -- wills and probate files. The City and Town of Poughkeepsie are separate entities and serve each separately. You probably have no need to visit either one's government offices. By all means, check the surrogate court and perhaps Adriance Library for obituaries -- both are in Poughkeepsie. You may find some town records and newspaper files also in Red Hook for Tivoli. Another good place to check is the Dutchess County Genealogical Society, which shares the Family History Center library and is located in the Mormon Church in Poughkeepsie. What is the surname you are researching? Good luck! Could someone who has done research at the local offices there give me some advice/hints as to the best places to go? Do I need to call first, etc? I have already contacted Tivoli and they don't have a death record for him so I thought the county seat would be the next best place to attempt. Thank you. 2. Hi Robin, When I was last in Tivoli, I was told all their records burned in a huge fire years ago. My grandmother, Maud Simmons, and her family came from that area. Their are tons of Simmons up there but I can't find anyone related to the family. Her mother was a Bell, gram was born in 1875. So good luck. The people in Tivoli told me to go to the "City" of Poughkeepsie and asked to see the records there. When I did a very unpleasant man told me there no records like that in their files. There is also a "Town of Poughkeepsie" and how the boundaries are drawn I have no idea. I was born in St. Francis Hospital 70 years ago and I don't know if that is in the city or town.... So Good Luck, you will need it! Mary Anne Berrigan Anderson Colonial Heights VA ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
