    3. Charlotte, I'm looking for a woman named Elizabeth Palmer or Elizabeth Douglas who married Jacob Hoag in Macedon, Wayne Co, NY. on Dec 1. 1785. Both Jacob and Elizabeth (Aug 19, 1760-Sept 6, 1818) were supposedly b. in Dutchess Co. She is one of my major brick walls. I'll be sending you a check for $2.50. thanks, Leslie Hope -----Original Message----- From: nydutche-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nydutche-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of C J Sheldon Sent: Monday, January 21, 2008 1:10 PM To: nydutche@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYDUTCHE] About PALMERS in Duchess Co.,NY Although I have VERY few PALMERS--I just ran across some eight pages copied from Ye Historie of Ye Town of Greenwich--CT.by MEAD for another reason . This book is widely available but in these 8 pages- someone who obviously had, or had researched , PALMERS had written in ink copious notes in the margins and around the bottom, too.. The book was donated to the Santa Barbara Gen. Library where I research from time to time. The notes in the margins are many and not all plainly written. However, if the note-writer had knowledge that a LISTED PALMER from CT. either married or migrated out of CT., a line is drawn into the margin and a note added. I counted at LEAST 6 PALMER men as having migrated into Duchess County,NY ; many to Saratoga,NY area; quite a few 'western NY'--usually Erie CO. or stated Buffalo; a number to other western states. I do not have Gedcom capability, nor FAX. I am really interested in John Monfort's descendants if I can find them. I think they might provide clues for my grandmother and her mother. It's fun you have the Traver name in your life that way. The Travers are a big family with lots of descendants. I think many of them are still in Dutchess Co. and I think they're all related. My grandmother's family came apart and I have been trying to put the pieces back together. She lost custody of 6 children in CT in the late 1800s, looks like, and then had a big rift with her family of origin. She came all the way west and left everybody there behind. Cut them all out of her life, including her first family of children. We never knew any of them. I found the descendants of my grandmother's brother. They have a photo of relatives who visited them in Norwalk CT after WWII. Those relatives came from Poughkeepsie but their names are lost now. John and Eleanor Traver Monfort had a close relationship to my ggran! dmother. She got married at their house and is buried in their plot at Poughkeepsie Rural. I hope it's maybe that part of the family that stayed connected. I would like to find out what really happened, also who those people in the picture are. I am amused because I live in Wilton NY and grew up on Traver Road at what was once called Travers Corners and my parents purchased the house I grew up in from a Will Traver, Will's parents lived on the family farm across the street, built 1810 or so! So maybe this is relavent. good luck, if you need more info or a cemetery check I will be happy to check it out. Jan VR Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NYDUTCHE] Daniel and Sally Lake
    2. Ginny B.
    3. I am interested in obtaining information on the on the Ancestors and Descendants of Daniel and Sally Lake who were residents of Charlotte in Chittenden, VT in 1839 when they provided an affidavit in support of Mary (Sherman) Perry/Soper's Widows pension based on the service of her second husband Edward Soper in the Rev. War. There were several Daniel Lakes in Dutchess and I am trying to determine just where Daniel and Sally Lake of Columbia County, NY and Chittenden, VT may fit in with the Lakes of Dutchess County. Also interested in the Maiden name of Daniel's wife Sally as I have a records of a Daniel and Sally Lines being the parents of a James Lake, the father of Andrew Lake, Civil War Veteran [1846-1911] of Pleasant Valley, NY. Any information on Daniel and Sally Lake of New Canaan, Columbia County, New York and Charlotte, Chittenden County, VT would be most appreciated. I have much information on the Lakes and am willing to share with other's who find this family of interest. I don't know where this particular Daniel and Sally Lake died but I am assuming quite possibly in Chittenden, VT unless in there old age and sometime after 1839 they returned to Dutchess County where some of their children or family may have resided at the time. ----------------------------- [Rev. Pension File W22278] State of Vermont Chittenden County ss: Daniel Lake & Sally Lake his wife of Charlotte in said County being sworn do respectively testify that they are acquainted with Mary Soper of Parishville in the County of St. Lawrence and State of New York, now widow of Edward Soper, deceased, that they both became first acquainted with the said Edward Soper and the said Mary at New Canaan, in the County of Columbia and the State of New York in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety three, that these deponents were then living at New Canaan and the said Edward and Mary removed into said town from Stephentown in the fall of the same year 1793 and lived in the neighborhood of these deponents, that the said Edward and Mary came there as husand and wife and lived together as such, these deponents then understood they had recently been married, that the said Edward had lost his former wife by whom he had several children and the said Mary had lost a former husband by whom she had two children, these deponents became well acquainted with the said Edward and Mary and their family and there was much familiarity between them, they well recollect that their own eldest child, a daughter Mary, was born on the 14th of May 1796, and that the next day after on the 15th of May 1796, the said Edward and Mary had a son Briggs S. Soper, who they believe is now living in Parishville aforesaid, and they further say they resided themselves in New Canaan until the year 1800 when they moved to Charlotte aforesaid where they have ever since resided, that the said Edward & Mary had another son, Edward Soper, before they left New Canaan from which place they removed to Charlotte about 2 years after these deponents did, and they resided within 40 or 50 rods of the house of these deponents for the span of about three years, during which time there was much familiarity between their families, the said Edward and Mary & family then removed from Charlotte to the town of Peru on the opposite side of Lake Champlain in the State of New YOrk about thirty miles from the residence of these deponents and lived there until the said Edward died which they believe was in the year 1813. All the while the said Edward lived at Peru these deponents were more or less acquainted with his family having frequently seen him and members of his family at the house in Charlotte, and the said Daniel Lake having been at his house in Peru frequently, and they would further say that during the whole of their acquaintance with the said Edward and Mary they always lived together as husband and wife, were publickly believed to have been lawfully married and these deponents never had any doubt of the fact, and they were always esteemed as notable and worthy people. The said Edward had several children by a former wife and the said Mary had two children by a former husband one Perry, as these deponents understood. After the death of the said Edward and after and about the year 1822 as they believe the said Mary moved from Peru to Parishville aforesaid to live with her said son Briggs S. Soper and has ever since lived with him as they understand and believe, and the said Daniel saith that he has called on the said Mary since she removed to Parishville aforesaid and they have frequently heard of the said Mary as living with the said Briggs S. Soper in Parishville and they believe she is still living there as the widow of the said Edward Soper. They further say that they always understood that said Soper was a revolutionary soldier and performed much service in the revolutionary Army. I believe that the bible may have some family names inside,I have not looked at it in years, it is at my father's house(he is 90) I will look this week, I am amused because the info from "Jeannie" VR of Mechanicvlle must be my grandfather's cousin, Jessie VR and she is the one we inherited the Fort bible and chair from, her father was my great great grandfather's Abram VR's cousin (son of Henry P VR and Jane Fort) and Jessie and her brother, Noel, never married, ( I would love to know that story) Noel died in his 40s and she was the last of that line, so the contents of her family home went to my father and uncle. They were both serving in WWII and so my aunt and mother, (neither had an appreciation of antiques at the time), picked out what few items they thought were interesting or sounded romantic, (spinning wheels, four poster canopy beds, lowboy, chests and pewter plates) etc. the rest was auctioned for little value, if you could read tha! t inventory and have an interest in history and antiques, you would be brought to tears to see what slipped away from our family and it's history. Jessie was educated at Vassar, her brother, Noel, at Princeton, both lived in their father's home in Mechanicville a large Victorian house that was a funeral home when I was a girl. Jessie lived to a very old age,my mother remembered she had a horn that she held to her ear as she was hard of hearing, she meticulously documented family wedding silver, pictures and many of the things in the house, a chest of drawers commissioned by her grandfather and a desk from this relative or that, christening gowns, silver spoons, china, etc. I would love to have affirmation on the chair which I mentioned, it looks like the "Brewster" chair in the Boston Museum collection, which would make it rare indeed, but if Jean La Fort came over to Canada first and later made his way to the Niskayuna area, via the Adirondacks, (in those days barely nativ! e american and hunting and trading trails), he could not possibly have brought furniture and there is a matching chair currently belonging to one of my cousins, unfortunately my aunt had it restored, stripped the paint and recaned the seat, which had collapsed, which has ruined some of its authenticity and value, although I have been told, if it is rare enough, it may not matter to the right collector. At any rate, I could believe that a bible could be brought this way, but furniture? I highly doubt it, is it possible some of the family members came from the Netherlands directly to NYS, rather than via Canada? It is indeed a mystery, I wish to know more on the Fort house in Poughkeepsie and how to help, what plans are in the works? If I came to Poughkeepsie, could we meet and drive by it, I would love a picture. I have a good friend in Stone Ridge who went to Columbia for graduate school in historic restoration, he has done some wonderful projects, including work on the Gracie Mansion. I am sure he will be interested in your project, he writes! proposal for grant money for restoration projects mostly now. He has a wonderful Dutch stone house that has been in his family for generations called Feather Farm, and several other properties that he has restored, including a gristmill. In the Spring, I am obviously going to go to Schaticooke and see what I can find out there. I will be in touch when I take a look at that bible. Sincere thanks, Jan VR Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Fort (Begun in 1892-Finished in 1924) Edited and Arranged by Richard Fort Sheil 1993 EDACRA Press Fredonia, NY [Original Book sent to VAB by Richard Fort Sheil] ********************************************************* ABOUT THIS EDITION While browsing the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints microfiche catalogue, I came across an entry entitled, Genealogy of the Fort Family in New York State, by Jerome H. Fort, dated 1924. I immediately sent for the microfilm and upon arrival I was astonished to find that it was not a published book, but rather a typewritten manuscript. In fact, it was seventy-three pages of material, often rather difficult to decipher because of poor film and a typewriter whose keys were not very clean. Along with the typewritten material were some eight pages of handwritten copy intended to be an insert within the work. This presented another kind of difficulty, for some pages are rather faded. Also Mr. Fort's script often leaves something to be desired in clarity. The handwritten pages are two wills pertaining to Jean Fort's estate, and several other documents. Rather than include them in the body of the work, I have opted to place them in an appendix. I have also taken the liberty of deleting a small amount of material in Mr. Fort's AUTHOR'S PREFACE which is not pertinent to this edition. The numbering scheme used by Mr. Fort for the genealogical ordering of individual entries is excessively cumbersome. An individual in the seventh generation, for instance, must have a genealogical number of six digits to classify him. To conserve space, I have excised his rather lengthy explanation of the numbering system. His material is also organized by line of descendancy through several generation, rather than the more customary procedure of presenting the entire family across the board generation by generation. On studying Mr. Fort's work, however, it became patently clear that there was a gold mine of information re the Fort family history. Most certainly I can find no cause to question the accuracy of his data, much of which was collected first hand. With the above in mind, I decided to attempt a revision which would include applying another numbering plan, name the REGISTER SYSTEM, and to reorganize the material to follow a presentation by generation. Happily this could be done with minimal changes in Mr. Fort's written material. His writing style tends to be a little bookish at times, and rather repetitive. I have made not attempt to alter this, for I feel it has a charm all of its own. I have added or changed a punctuation mark here and there to clarify meaning. A few other changes should be noted. Mr. Fort was not very consistent with writing out dates, nor was he consistent in the use of the abbreviations he lists in his AUTHOR'S PREFACE. I have opted to use the day-month-year order and to use the three-letter abbreviation for month, hence July 3, 1923 will appear 3 Jul 1923, except for those places Mr. Fort quotes and outside source. His list of abbreviations is quite standard and I have used it through! out, and I have added several new abbreviations to the list. Mr. Fort spells the early family name as LeForte since this is incorrect French gender agreement, it should be LeFort or LaForte, I have chosen to spell it as La Forte, and to separate the article from the name. On several occasions, Mr.. Fort has included children of the second generation of a daughter. In keeping with fairly standard practices, I have chosen to eliminate these entries and list only children of the first generation of daughters. The original title page contains bits of incorrect information (see facsimile Title Page). It must have been Mr. Fort's intention to include genealogies of some connected families, but in the typewritten manuscript none is included. He also states on the title page that copies of the work may be found in libraries in Syracuse, Albany and New York City. Carnegie Library in Syracuse does indeed have a copy (from which the LDS copy was made), but there is none catalogued in either the State Library at Albany or the City Library of New York City. In the event the reader might be curious as to my interest in the Fort family, my great grandmother was Lydia Ann Fort (1829-1901), a favorite person with both my grandfather and my mother, and it was from her that my grandfather, George Fort Slocum, and I acquired our middle names. Richard Fort Sheil Fredonia, New York 1993 N.B. All entries in parentheses ( ) are Mr. Fort's. Entries in in[sic] brackets [ ] are mine. R. F. S. ********************************************* AUTHOR'S PREFACE This genealogy is not complete. No genealogy ever can be. It is as complete in so far as such records as I have been able to obtain can make it. Its preparation has extended over a period of about thirty years, has necessitated a considerable volume of correspondence and such research in Genealogical Libraries, particularly those at Albany and at Syracuse where I found many valuable records; as well as numerous trips to more or less distant places to examine old records. Occasionally people have neglected or refused to reply to my letters asking for information, but the majority of those with whom I have corresponded or have sought out have been most courteous and earnest in their help, and acknowledgement is hereby made of their assistance and of the information obtained from various books and records in the libraries above named. I must speak my special thanks to Miss Jeanie VanRennselaer, of Mechanicville, New York, for a most valuable service. I had been trying for! along time, but without much success to secure the records of the Old Dutch Church of Schaghticoke, New York, which were then at a little place called "Reynolds," near Troy, New York. Miss Van Rensselaer most kindly took the trouble to go to the old church at Reynolds, copy all the records there mentioning our family and send them to me. Without them this Genealogy could never have been completed to any worthwhile extent. She should have the gratitude of every one of our family. May her name long be remembered as of one who did such a gracious and kind act. Still there remains much not contained in the pages of this Genealogy. Many persons have been unable to give me any information beyond that of their own generation. Of the generation of their fathers they know but little, and of their grandfathers often they know not even their names. Sometimes I have been able to connect up such information as I did receive with records I already had or with records I later fo! und elsewhere. At other times I was not able to do so. Throughout th e Genealogy I have indicated by letters n.f.i. the cases where I have been able to obtain "no further information," and in closing pages I have included a section which I have called "UNKNOWN CONNECTIONS" wherein I have p laced all names as well as such fragmentary family lines which I have received and which I have been unable to connect with the Genealogy because of lack of sufficient information. Unquestionably they belong in the Genealogy somewhere. Perhaps some other searcher may some day find the requisite missing line which will connect them up. I am happy to have completed the work thus far and trust it may prove of interest to present and future generations. I have tried to make it as authentic as possible and have carefully excluded from it everything which did not bear witness to the truth. Oneida, N. Y. January, 1923 (Signed) Jerome H. War Major, who lived in Kingston/Poughkeepsie area NYS Other Fort name variations are purported to be La Fort, Le Fort, Laford, Vandervoort and sometimes Forte, from what I have read. I did see a UK inquiry re: the Name Montfort version Moorfoot! I think maybe these versions are spelling errors as not everyone was well versed or misread, due to handwriting discrepancies Are you looking for Fort or Montfort info Jane Montfort'd father was Peter Montfort of Sprout Creek (NY?)
