    2. Carol Here is a good site for locating Quaker Information, books and etc. and where to send to obtain it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~quakers/ Also go to Family Library on the LDS Site http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Go to "Keyword" and put in Quakers in New York A List of microfilms that can be ordered will come up. You can obtain them for a low fee at your nearest LDS Family History Center and they have readers you can use to review them. They also have volunteers to help you with your research. You'll find it very interesting and they kept excellent records. Good Luck Pat R

    2. Greetings, if you don't find what you need on the Dutchess Co site that has some Quaker records online, you order microfilm of each of the Quaker monthly meeting records? of that area from any LDS family history center in your area...start with the Oblong M.M. of Dutchess Co. and go out from there. They are very hard to read, have a good pair of glasses or a? magnifying glass handy. You will need it. That is how we found our Margaret Jenkins. Married out of Unity and was disowned by the Oblong M. M. in 1789. We now think she may have married in St. Albins VT instead of Dutchess county based on her father being in St. Albins in 1788, 1789, 1790. All we know for sure is she married abt 1788 as dau. Margaret was. b. abt. 1789. fran in mi -----Original Message----- From: cheap@simon.com To: nydutche@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, 23 Jan 2008 4:37 pm Subject: Re: [NYDUTCHE] Quakers in Duchess Co,NY Charlotte, "A suggestion to all of you researching in Duchess county--whether or not they were Quaker, and especially if you are not familiar with Duchess Co. reference books---Look for copies of the several VOLUMES of ' SETTLERS of the BEEKMAN PATENT' by DOHERTY, Frank J.. 1. [NYDUTCHE] West/Jenkins
    2. After 18 years of research invloving the WRONG West line, and the latest almost perfect DNA match to our Samuel West. b abt 1760 who lived in Peru, Clinton Co Ny 1792-1831 we are now searching Dutchess Co for the parents of Samuel West b. 1760-1770 and William Barber West b. 1755-1765. William settled in Queensbury by 1795 and never lived on the land next to and with Samuel. Samuel m. a Quaker Margaret Jenkins abt 1789 , granddau. of Jedediah Jenkins who was in 1790 Beekman. That is what places our West in that area. Based on Valentine Jenkins Sr being disowned by the Oblong M.M. 12-14-1789 along with several daughters...Margaret was also disowned 12-14-1789, that is how we finally connected Margaret to Jedediah Jenkins in July 2007. The latest DNA 36 out of 37 marker match to Samuel is out of Onondaga Co NY. After much cross referancing census records ( every record in the 4 town area of Onondaga Co that we needed to research ..3 were burned before 1850 and 1 burned in 1890) we have come to the realization that our West line is somehow connected to the William West b. 1717 out of Windsor, Hartford Co CT whose lineage came out of Salem, Mass. He settled in Columbia Co NY., he had David 1752 in Amenia, based on David's Rev. War pension file, Asa 1761 who died Salina, Onondaga Co Ny in 1820 and a few others.. William 1717 had several brothers that I am trying to track...with no luck. They are: Benjamin b 1733, Asa b. 1721, Samuel 1814, Thomas 1719. Our Samuel and William Barber West co-owned land in Peru in 1792, that makes them "kin". Samuel was in 1790 St. Albins, VT along with Valentine Jenkins and they were both out of St. Albins records by 1791 with Sam into Peru by 1792 and Valentine back in Dutchess Co in 1800. Years of researching William Barber West and the notation in the Thurston Family genealogy that stated the West family was out of CT is all we have had to work with all these years. In 1790 census in Plattsburgh NY was a Benjamin West all by himself surrounded by men who bought land in Peru, Clinton Co NY. That is our ONLY clue and we all know there are not many records in the state of NY to search. So if there is anoyone out there out of those 4 brothers of William 1717, I sure would like to hear from you. Fran in Rockford, MI **************Start the year off right. 3. ............Will have copies made for each of you reference PALMERS in Duchess Co.,NY. Probably you are aware that the Duchess Co. towns / locations indicate that at least SOME of the PALMERS who went there --were Quakers ? Washington and Charlotte Precinct's; Nine Partners; Amenia,etc..-----I have other ancestors who were Quakers in these same areas / villages / [and cemeteries . A suggestion to all of you researching in Duchess county--whether or not they were Quaker, and especially if you are not familiar with Duchess Co. reference books---Look for copies of the several VOLUMES of ' SETTLERS of the BEEKMAN PATENT' by DOHERTY, Frank J.. Vol.1 was pub. in 1990. I think Mr. Doherty is now on Vol. 6 or 7. This man will be or is already --a Duchess Co. HERO. Here is a correction on WHERE I copied the pages of the 'Greenwich' book--just in case you - 1-Use any of the info and need a correct SOURCE location. 2-Needed to write to the [source] Library. This copy was found at the CARLSBAD, CA. Genealogy Section of Carlsbad's older library next to the Civic Center. There is a NEWER library in Carlsbad which I have not yet seen but the decision was to keep some sections including Genealogy at the older location. This information would be necessary should you try to locate this library and this particular book copy. To other west coast researchere: If you have an opportunity, this Library in Carlsbad [ North San Diego County ] is a GEM. Easily it is among my top five SO.CA. Genealogy Libraries for the breadth of the holdings there. Allow LOTS of time. SMILE! Charlotte J.Sheldon

Author: abracadabra243 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.dutchess/5900.1.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: For those of you interested in the descendants of Abraham and Mary Jane (Monfort)Fort, the Fort Homestead Associations has done much research based on local original documentation and documentation from other credible resources from Cayuga County, New York to New Orleans, Louisiana and beyond on the descendants of Abraham and Jane (Monfort) Fort [his second wife] for those that had issue - our records show ***12*** children for Abraham and Jane (Monfort) Fort. However Abrahams ancestors and the extended family are also of interest since Abrahams Father Johannes Abraham also most likely inhabited the same Homestead in Poughkeepsie in the mid to late 18th century. Abraham who m. Jane Monfort as his second wife also had two children John and Ann by his first wife - Osseltje Ursualla Ackerman who is assumed to have died sometime bet. Bet. 12 Jan 1775 birth of son John - 29 Dec 1776 marriage to Jane - both children were baptized at the RDC in Poughkeepsie - Ann in 1773 and John in 1775 - little is known on them except for their baptism records - it has been assumed that John died young since Abraham later names his 1st son by Jane b. 1778 John. In total we show Abraham having 14 children by his two wives. Of the 12 children - several were females who died unmarried and only three were males none of which appear to have left surviving them any known male descendants carrying the surname FORT - hence the name of Fort died out especially in Poughkeepsie about 1842 with the death of his son James whose Dutchess County Will and inventory the Association is in possession of a copy and the death of his last single unmarried sister Sarah in 1850 - Abraham and Jane's son, Peter, died in Cayuga County in 1875 unmarried - However in 1856 his grand nephew Peter Fort Nelson's name was legally changed to Peter Fort [Jr] according to his Grand Uncle Peter Fort's first will - later revoked - "so that he may bear my name" and assumedly to give Peter a "Fort Heir". Peter Fort Nelson a/k/a Peter Fort Jr. however predeceased in 1873 in New Orleans and is buried with his parents John Peter Nelson and Cornelia Mandeville (Nelson) Nelson - she the 2nd wife of John Peter Nelson and his 1st cousin ! - in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, the Tombstone Reads "Peter Nelson, Jr.". It appears that John Peter Nelson his father was first interred in Cayuga County at his death in 1878 and later 1896 reinterred in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Many of Rev. War Abraham Fort of Poughkeepsie's descendants bore the surname Pierson, Nelson, Haviland and Thompson. What follows is a listing of his children as the association know them: JOHN A. FORT b: 28 Jul 1778 - Bapt. 23 August 1778, 1st RDC Poughkeepsie d: Abt. 1828 married MARY CLEMENT in1816 New Orleans, LA [he died in New Orleans currently researching the probate of his estate] MAGDALENE FORT b: 24 May 1780 in Bapt. 18 June 1780, 1st RDC, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., NY m. Co., NY [no known spouse-no known issue] ---------------------------- Regarding daughters Magdalene and Helen: Magdalene was born 24 May 1780 and bap. at the RDC Poughkeepsie 18 June 1780 - We have seen this record. Helen was born 28 May 1781 m. Isaac Pierson per the Ostrander Genealogy and per Isaac Pierson Family Bible 26 May 1781 named as "Hellen the daughter of Abraham and Jane Fort" in an image we were able to capture off of e-bay when the Bible was up for sale. The Pierson Bible was sold for a large sum on e-bay sometime back abt. Jan. 2006 - We'd love to know where it is now so we could get a better look at the information contained in it. At this point we do not believe Magdalene and Helen are one in the same person. No information was found on a baptism for Helen in the RDC Poughkeepsie Records. We have found Lena as a Dutch Equivalent for Magdalene but not Helen. Abraham Fort's 1819 will names daughter Helen wife of Isaac Pierson and other daughters but not Magdalene. The Ostrander Genealogy states that Magdelene Fort m. Kane Pierson - However We do not have record of any further information on this marriage or children for them and she is not named in her father's 1819 will - We have assumed, possibly wrongly so, the information in the Ostrander Genealogy to be correct and that Magdalena perhaps died prior to 1819 without issue since she is not named in her father's will. We believe it is possible Helen and Magdalene could be one in the same and the Ostrander Genealogy is in error but for now we show Helen and Magdalene as two Separate individuals based on research thus far since the Ostrander Genealogy also names Magdalene Fort [with no birth day, mo. or yr] m. Kane Pierson as a sister to Helen who married Isaac Pierson. ------------------------ http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysuffol/nymd.html New York Marriages & Deaths Source: New York Marriages and Deaths The New York Weekly Museum, also known as the Impartial Gazetter and Saturday Evening Post, and Ladies' Weekly Museum, was printed in New York from 1788 to 1817. This index is a compilation of the Marriages and Deaths recorded in the journal and contains about 20, 000 entries. Pierson, Isaac, merchant of this city, on Wed. mar. to Miss Helen Fort, dau. of Major Abraham Fort of Poughkeepsie. (May 1, 1802) ------------------------------------------------ It should also be noted that the Jerome Fort Gen. only listed 9 children for Abraham and Jane - both Magdelene and Helen are not included and neither is Maria Fort who m. Harvey Granger. Maria is named as daughter Mary in her father's will - she did not marry Harvey Granger as his second wife until 1829 when she was 42 (Harvey died in 1846).
