    1. [NYDUTCHE] Surname-BARLOW in Cortland and Duchess Co's.,NY

    3. To Marilyn McNamara and Listers: : Myron Henry SMITH / BARLOW-Resident of Homer and Cortland from1922-1943 b. 07.DEC1880 in Millbrook,Duchess Co.,NY to Elizabeth G. [BARLOW] known as Libbie ,and Addison Vail SMITH. Addison was from the Quaker family of Staphen H.SMITH and Lydia [VAIL] SMITH of Stanford [ -ville]. I do NOT know her parents' names nor the place of marriage for which I have searched. Libbie died about 1886 and is buried in the Hicksite Cemetery in Stanford where Stephen and Lydia SMITH are also buried. At some point within 1 to 3 years, The SMITH son-Myron Henry was adopted into a BARLOW family--I presume a relative of the child's deceased mother's family. There is family lore on this: That Myron was adopted by an 'uncle' who was a dentist in the county ,a Charles K. BARLOW. However,so far, I have found nothing on this adoptive parent. By 1898, Myron was nearing majority and decided to enter the U.S. NAVY as a seaman: I have a list of his Naval Assignments from Nov.17,1898........to.......31.Jan.1922:Then to Naval Reserves until.......01.Jan.1931. 30 years of Honorable Service. On 27.APR.1942 ,he also registered for possible service in WW-2, but was not called up. Myron H. BARLOW died 11.Dec.1943 at age 68 in Homer,Cortland Co.,NYS. BU. at ATWATER Cemetery,TWP. of Homer,NY. Myron H. BARLOW was the 1 /2 brother of my own father--Lloyd Addison SMITH--with a common father. Myron lived with my family most of the time from 1922 until his death in 1943. He was known to us children as Uncle Bud and much-loved- particularly by the younger of the 5 children in the L.A. SMITH family. Marilyn--Nice to hear from you so soon again. Charlotte J.Sheldon

    1. [NYDUTCHE] Burial of Arethusa Goodspeed Bearse Hall
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JamesAllen245 Surnames: Hall, Goodspeed, Bearse, Vanderburgh Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.dutchess/9678/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to find where my ancestor ARETHUSA GOODSPEED is buried. She was born Apr 24, 1824 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA. She married, first, GEORGE H. BEARSE. They moved from MA to New York City about 1853. He died there in 1860 but was interred back in MA. She remarried in 1862 to DEWITT CLINTON HALL in NYC. He was the son of DR. ASAHEL HALL and CATHERINE RUTSEN VANDERBURGH. Dewitt and Arethusa lived in NYC until about 1872 when it appears they relocated, at least temporarily, to Poughkeepsie. I suspect she was ill and in the care of her father-in-law who practiced medicine in Poughkeepsie. She died at the home of Dr. Hall on Feb. 13, 1872. The question is: Where is she buried? Her parents and her 1st husband are buried in Hyannis, Barnstable, MA. Most of her siblings (of which there were 12) relocated to the New York City area in the 1850 and are probably buried around NYC, yet she died in Dutchess Co. When her 2nd husband died in Norwalk, CT 42 years later, he was reportedly interred in Poughkeepsie. So, she could be buried around Poughkeepsie, or around NYC, or back in Massachusetts. A death certificate or record would probably indicate where she was to be interred but I haven't seen any indication that Dutchess Co. kept such records prior to 1882 (or later). I have seen cemetery transcriptions for many of the Dutchess Co. cemeteries online but there must be more, or they are not complete, since I haven't been able to locate any graves for any members of this Hall family, who I am confident must be buried in either the Poughkeepsie or Fishkill area. I have death notices for both Arethusa (Arathusa) and Dewitt from the New York Times but nothing from any local papers. Can anyone please help? 1. [NYDUTCHE] Gallaudet Home Burned - 1900
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: abracadabra243 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.dutchess/9677/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Poughkeepsie Daily Eagle Monday Feb. 19, 1900 GALLAUDET HOME BURNED A Total Destruction The Twenty-Six Inmates Safely Conveyed to the Farm House. The Fire Caught in the southwest corner of the building - Origin Unknown - Loss about $$45,000 - covered by insurance - Wappinger Engine Arrives in Time to Save the Laundry. - - - - - A bright light illuminated the southern sky about 10 o'clock Sunday night, and it was reported that the fire was at the Gallaudet Home for the Deaf and Dumb, near New Hamburgh. Later, it was reported that the barns connected with the institution only were burned. But the fire was more serious, as it was not the barns, but the institution itself that was burned, and is now in ruins. From our correspondent at Wappingers Falls, we learned that the fire broke out in the southwest corner of the building, and made rapid headway. The firew as plainly visible at Wappingers Falls and this city. The unfortunate inmates of the home, twenty sis in number, were all safely gotten out of the burning building and conveyed to the farm house about a quarter of a mile away. Aid was sent for at Wappingers Falls and Garner steam fire engine went to the scene of the fire reaching there in time to play on and save the laundry, a brick building in the rear of the main structure. The main bui! lding was entirely consumed. The origin of the fire is unknown. The lost is estimated at $45,000 and is covered by insurance. The home was founded in 1885, and was a substantial brick and stone building, situated in the midst of a farm of 156 acres, extending from New Hamburgh road to the river. All the buildings were back from the road nearly a mile, and are at least two miles from Wappingers Falls. The Home was under the control of the Episcopal Church Mission for Deaf Mutes, and a great many Poughkeepsie people are interested in its work, and will regret its loss. About two years ago an addition was built on the Home at a cost of about $20,000. [Copyrighted Transcription by G. 1. [NYDUTCHE] Mrs. Mary Shepherd - Poughkeepsie - Approaches the Century Mark - 1900

Author: abracadabra243 Surnames: Shepherd, Quinn Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.dutchess/9676/mb.ashx Message Board Post: [Mrs. Mary Shepherd - Poughkeepsie - Approaches the Century Mark] The Courier Poughkeepsie Sunday Feb. 11, 1900 - Page 5 APPROACHING THE CENTURY MARK Three Old Residents of Dutchess County, Who if they Live, Will be One Hundred Years Old This Year. There are three residents of Dutchess County, who, if they live, will this year reach the advanced age of one hundred years; each will have lived through the entire period between the close of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Mrs. Maria C. Turner, of the town of Poughkeepsie, is the oldest of the trio, having been born July 5th 1800; Mr. John V. Storm, of Fishkill, was born November 24th, 1800, and Mrs. Mary Shepherd, of No. 17 Davis street, Poughkeepsie, was born on Christmas Day, 1800. [SKETCH - Mrs. Mary Shepherd] To a representative of THE COURIER yesterday, Mrs. Mary Shepherd said that her girlhood was spent in Ireland. Her birthplace was a small village in the County of Tipperary, near the Kilkenny line. Until she came to New York about seventy years ago, she resided most of the time in Kilkenny. Her memory is exceedingly good and she named several deceased persons who resided in Poughkeepsie, or whose descendants reside here, who were born in the neighborhood of her early home. Mrs. Shepherd's maiden name was Mary Quinn. Her husband, John Shepherd, has been dead half a century. He was killed at the time of the construction of the Hudson River Railroad. He went to work on the road on Monday and lost his life in an accident on Thursday of the same week. Mrs. Shepherd was the mother of three children, John Shepherd, Martin Shepherd and Katie Shepherd. The latter died at the age of five years; Martin Shepherd has been dead a long time. The only surviving child is John Shepherd, who is about sixty years of age. He is married and lives with his family at Albany. [This was a long article which I printed in sections - it seems I may have missed a line or two here - nonetheless I will continue.] . . . . with her husband and children in a home on lower Church street. About fifty-five years ago she purchased a little house on Davis street, which has since been her home. Despite her advance age, Mrs. Shepherd is active. She lives entirely along. Everything about her premises is neat and clean. She does her own house cleaning, even whitewashing the walls when occasion requires; she bakes and cooks and does her own washing, and finds time between her tasks to visit her neighbors, by whom she is always welcomed. In appearance Mrs. Shepherd is short and sturdy framed. Her, eyesight and hearing are both good and she moves about with an elastic step which shows more vigor than one would consider possible to be contained in the human frame after nearly a century of wear and tear. She is an excellent needlewoman, and a few months ago completed with her own hands a quilt containing hundreds of pieces, which is triumph of skill and patience. When asked what her means of subsistence were, Mrs. Shepherd replied that she had none except a small sum of money she receives at intervals from the House of Industry, for which institution she formerly did some sewing and an occasional gift of coal from the city authorities. "The neighbors are very kind," said the old lady. "When they bake they often send me in a loaf of bread and I am always welcome to a cup of tea when I drop in on them for a little visit." There is a mortgage on Mrs. Shepherd's little house of $200 of which she borrowed one hundred dollars at one time when work was slack, and the other hundred dollars when her husband was killed to defray the funeral and other expenses. Mrs. Shepherd finds solace in her lonely life in her tobacco pipe. She says that she has smoked for years and that the habit is a great comfort to her. She doe not think that tobacco hurt her; in fact she holds to the contrary. She lights her pipe the first thing in the morning upon getting out of bed and smokes at intervals during the day. Sketches of the other two old residents of Dutchess County, portraits of whom are given in connection with this article, have been published in THE COURIER; that of Mr. Storm about a year ago, and that of Mrs. Turner two or three weeks ago. I need to get to work contacting cemeteries in the areas where my family lived. I am in Missouri, so it isn't easy for me trying to find people in New York. I do recognize some of the areas you mentioned from previous searching I have done. If it wouldn't be asking too much, would you look for the following Tripps: George C, Mary Ann P, Leonard I, Almeda D, Sarah C, James S, Hiram M, Frances, William M, Eva, and Hannah. These are all siblings and their wives except the first two who are my gggg granparents. Dutchess county is where they all lived at one time or another. My email is ANTDGC@aol.com Previously, I paid the Dutchess County Historical Society to look for these people, but had no luck. I thank you in advance for any time you spend on this, you are very kind to offer. Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This book only has 1700-1899, so if you're looking for more recent burial's you should contact the Rhinebeck Cemetery Assoc., Rt. 9, Rhinebeck, NY 12572 I also looked in another book that has all Dutchess Co. Cemeteries. There WERE some Tripp's in Stanford, Beekman, Clinton, Pine Plains, LaGrange and Union Vale areas. If you can give me some first names, maybe I can help. Have you check out the LDS website? www.familysearch.org?They're great! As for Losee, that name sounds familiar, but not in either book for Rhinebeck. As for Brownell's, they were a more modern name - I went to school in Rhinebeck with a Brownell! His dad just died recently. I'll try to get the obituary for you. What's your email so I can forward the page to you? There are some Lossee's in the other book, as well as Brownell's listed in the other towns mentioned above. The other's I don't recognize. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Cheryl Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
