In the mid 1700's, my ancestor, Joseph Sherwood, lived in Oblong. He was a Pvt. in Capt. Uriah Drake's Company of Minute Men in Ulster County during the Rev. War. He died sometime after 1760. Do you know where I can locate Rev. War records listing his Regiment and the battles they fought? And, what town is Oblong now? Thank you for your assistance. meyberse@comcast.net

Then there is always the outrageous claim of my mother's - if the second toe is longer than the big toe then you are of Irish Aristocracy. I think it is just my mother's excuse for having a long toe. :) I know there is a jail in Ireland which has a Kimlin like sound to it. I have to look it up and pass that information on to you. Interesting articule, my Mother whose family was from southern Germany, had the second toe longer than the big toe and I inherited it. She always said that it was because the southern mountain people had to be able to wrap their toes around the rocks to climb the mountains. The articule says the Celts started out in southern Germany. Thanks, Carol L. Heap

Yes the names did get repeated - it was very confusing trying to sort the Kimlin's out - It seems there were two Richard James Kimlins both born in Ireland - one born abt. 1821 and on b. abt. 1842 - if I recall correctly I think the one born in 1842 married his cousin, a daughter of the one b. in 1821. The Richard James b. 1821 also had a son Richard James b. abt. 1846. Anyway I understand that the name may have originally been Kimlahan. On the 1920 census in Poughkeepsie Donald Kimlin, 4, is with parents Robert J. & Sarah. Robert J. is age 40. Robert J. Kimlin, 20, is on the 1900 census in Poughkeepsie with father James Kimlin, 52, who is a widowed carpenter. In 1880, James Kimlin, 33, a carpenter, is in Poughkeepsie with his family which includes 7 month old Robert James. This family is indexed as K...Lin for some reason. On the actual page the name looks like Kimlin to me. On the 1850 census in Poughkeepsie the only James Kimlin is a 4 yr. old in the household of Robert Kimlin, age 20, b. Ireland who is next door to the William & Mary Kimlin family. William is age 42, b. Ireland. The name Kimlin is not common. I think all the Kimlins in Dutchess co. are probably related.
