I happened to come across this while browsing microfilm and captured a copy because it mentions the County Alms House. Thought I would share it here in case it helps anyone as it mentions Mr. Beecher's wife's maiden name. - - - - - The Courier Poughkeepsie Weekly Newspaper Published at Poughkeepsie March 26, 1893 HIRAM T. BEECHER [includes what appears to be a sketched Portrait] Among the best known farmers of Pleasant Valley is Hiram T. Beecher, who from his long and active interest in church affairs and his prominence at all religious gatherings in the vicinity of his home, is often called the Rev. Mr. Beecher, a title which he has justly earned although it has never been bestowed upon him by an ecclesiastical body. Mr. Beecher is an ernest and eloquent speaker, and his life is without reporach. He has been an officer in the Methodist church at Pleasant Valley for many years, where in the absence of the pastor and during intervals when the pastorate was vacant, he has acceptably performed the duties of that office so far as was within the province of a lay preacher. He preached regularly at the County Alms House for several years, and spent the early part of his life in the town of Washington where he married his wife, a Miss White, who is still living. He rmoved to Pleasatn Valley about thirty yeras ago. He has been a public speaker upon almost every local occasion during all of that time. In politics Mr. Beecher was originally a Republican, but during late years he has drifted into the Prohibition party. - - - - - - In the 1850 Census for the Town of Washington, Dutchess County there is a Hiram Beecher age 29 enumerated in the household of a Catherine Beecher age 56 and several other Beerhers. Perhaps this is our Hiram T. living in the household with his widowed mother? - - - - - - Ginny http://www.geocities.com/ginnyflies/ Ginny's History, Genealogy, Historical Preservation, and Poughkeepsie HomeTown Page

Good question on length of service, and I am not sure exactly how to answer that. I don't believe that bounty lands were offered as extra incentive until about 1781 or 1782. Amount of land offered depended on rank, not length of service. Determining how bounty lands were awarded is a complicated process to describe. Not everyone who was part of a militia unit, for instance, was eligible to receive bounty lands. The militias were divided up into groups called classes, and when the militia was called up for activity duty, each class had to supply one recruit. That one recruit who actually went off to war was then awarded the bounty land right that belonged to the class as a whole. All of this is explained in the introductory material of the standard classic "New York in the Revolution as Colony and State". I know this title is available online if you have access to HeritageQuestOnline through your local public library, or if you subscribe to Ancestry.com. Linda At 03:01 AM 2/23/2008, you wrote: > 2. My family was in War of 1812 in Ulster Co.,NY (Plattekill) and they got Land bounty rights . So, are you trying to say that their land wasn’t in Plattekill UC.,NY ? It was somewhere else ? Are any of our subscribers related to: Nathan, Ruben, Thomas, William Smith or John Smith the Joiner? Or is there some place that I can find additional information on these people. These names are common in my family (and probably a million others) and my family spent some time in Dutchess Co after 1795 but I don't know what town or if they went there because of related family members. Definitely a long shot. **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Linda, Thank you for your excellent description of the bounty lands in New York, and most particularly the book information. I was unaware of this book, and will have to get a copy. The only thing I would add to your description of the bounty land and Military Tract is that the towns were all given classical names. I grew up wondering why all the classical names, and just recently learned they are all bounty lands--Rome Syracuse, Homer, Ithaca, and on and on. Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. Like a number of states, New York set up a specific area of unsettled frontier land to assign as bounty land for military veterans. Bounty lands for New York veterans were located on the Military Tract in the Finger Lakes region of central New York and included the present counties of Cayuga, Cortland, Onondaga, Seneca, and parts of Oswego, Schuyler, Tompkins and Wayne. I don't remember specifically how the land was assigned - randomly / auction / etc. Since not everyone felt like traipsing off to the wilderness even if they had been a soldier, lots of veterans did not take up the land, but instead sold off their rights to someone else - sometimes a speculator or agent, sometimes just another farmer. "The Balloting Book and Other Documents Relating to Military Bounty Lands in the State of New-York" was a book originally published by NY State in 1825, now available as a Higginson reprint. Among other information, this book includes a listing by New York regiment of each soldier's name, rank, and bounty land awarded (with township name and lot number), as well as another alphabetical list of the persons awarded bounty land and to whom they delivered (sold) their patents to the land. Lloyd Bockstruck's "Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants Awarded by State Governments" (GPC, 1996) includes an index to the names of veterans found in this Balloting Book and I believe is available as the online database "Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants" on Ancestry.com. Family stories about getting land for Revolutionary War service within Dutchess County or within other previously settled colonial New York counties (other than the central NY military tract counties) are not referring to land formally granted as military bounty land. Perhaps the family story has been garbled somehow. If the soldier actually was assigned bounty land, maybe it was sold to someone else because the family wanted to stay in eastern NY. If James Rose was from Dutchess County then the land grants aren't given necessarily in the same county. How did the government decide where the land grants should be? Suzie, Joseph had a son, Joseph, who was born in 1751. He is probably the other Joseph. the Joseph listed is a Sergeant and Nathan is a Private. I was told that Joseph was in the 4th Ulster and all I know is that he was a Pvt. So, this is probably not the record of the father, Joseph. I'll keep hunting....Thanks. Hi Cousin Marcia:-) What I sent is the tax lists for Dutchess County and it is quite confusing. Especially as there seems to be two Joseph Sherwoods of age to pay taxes! David, Joseph and another Joseph were all taxed in the Southern Precinct for Dutchess County. The second Joseph was living on Eagers farm and paid the taxes 1768 to 1771 and then moved the Philips (Philipse). Then Joseph who was originally living in the Southern Precinct moved to Philipse and was taxed: In the Town of Philipse, p. 295 Sherwood Jeremiah 1774-1779 John 1774-1779 Joseph 1772; farm 1775-1779 Whether these three are related, I guess, has to found. I did check at www.footnote.com which has the original pension files and service records and only found a Joseph Sherwood and Nathaniel Sherwood on the pay roll of the 2nd New York Regiment commanded by Col. Philip Cortlandt. I will send you a copy by private email as the list messages won't take attachments. What I saw on the website of Sherwoods is that Joseph b. 16 May 1712 d. abt 1760 in the Oblong, Dutchess county and married Mary about 1734 and had: l. Nathan D. b. 16 Jan 1737/38 md. Joanna Noble. 2. Sarah 3. Betty 4. Mary 5. Stephen 6. Ebenezer 7. Joseph 8. Abigail 9. Eunice I think you should get in touch with the author of the website with the Sherwood descendants and ask about sources for the children of Joseph and Mary. Hi cousin Suzie, Good to hear from you again! Thanks for your help. Now, if you could just decipher all that for me. I can't figure out who was where and who was taxed..... According to the DAR, he was a Pvt. in the Rev. War as he was listed in their DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition. He is also listed in other sources, as well. Perhaps the Ulster Militia was not as formal a group as others. That's why I'm trying to find out info. on that reg't. My ancestors resided in Beekman Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY from ca 1758 through 1762--MA land records of the sales of their properties in MA was the source. The following people and/or families are related and the people in question residing in Beekman Precinct at the time of the land transactions Joseph Sewell b. 1737/8 Mendon Worcester Co., MA Anna Sewell b. 1739/40 Mendon Worcester Co., MA m. William Soule Margaret Sewell Sherman, Husband Elkanah Sherman Rebekah Sewell Lewis, Husband Lemuel (often transcribed as Samuel) Lewis Joseph & Anna both are found also on a merchant list there, I believe (without checking my notes) it was Joseph Mabbit's list. I have been looking for the marriages of both Joseph Sewell to wife unknown and Anna Sewell to William Soule. The Soules resided later for many years prior to the confiscation of their land during the revolutionary war in what is now known as Spencertown, Columbia Co., NY; however they did not marry there. Both Joseph Sewell and family and the William Soules ended up in what is now known as Alburgh, Grand Isle Co., VT by 1792 when land records began in the area inclusive of bordering Lower Canada. I have searched diligently for some 30 years for the marriage dates and place of marriages for both Joseph and Anna. Both were single at the time of their land sales--Joseph's in 1759 and Anna's in 1762 while in Beekman. I believe both married in Dutchess Co., NY but have found nothing to corroborate my suspicions. Can you help? Thank You, Susan Hedeen (I live in Virginia)

Hi Marcia, Here is what if found in the book "Dutchess County, NY Tax Lists 1718-1787 by Clifford M. Buck with Rombout Precinct by William Willis Reese" edited by Arthur and Nancy Kelly, Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY, 1990, page 278, in the Southern Precinct: Sherwood/Shearwood: David on Caleb Sweets place; June 1761-1767 Joseph; Feb. 1759-1767 Joseph for Eagers farm; 1768-1771 to Philips On p. 267: Eager, farm Joseph Sherwood to 1768-1771 to Phillips Eager, John June 1759-1767 See map here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nylnphs/Images/L9P_MAP.GIF The Southern Precinct was at one time Putnam county and borders Westchester county, I would also try records in those counties. Also the Joseph Sherwood listed (on the website) as being born 16 May 1712 and died <1760> the Oblong, would be too old [or dead?] to serve in the Revolution but his son Joseph would not be. Here's a little tidbit I found at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/dutchess/data/removals/remove103-108.htm Quaker Removals: Joseph Sherwood, from Ninepartners to Marlboro, 15 of 7m, 1824. I think Marlboro is Marlborough Monthly Meeting in Ulster County, New York. Hope this helps some. I have an ancestor James Rose(Rosa) who served in the Revolutionary War from Dutchess Co. NY.? The family written passbook says that "James was awarded by the government, a large tract of land?for safely delivering a message over a dangerous road?and that part of the land is where the town of Kinderhook now stands."? He died in 1783 or 1784 and his children were quite small.? His widow never established a claim to the land and she married a Mr. Terwilliger.? Is there any definite proof that James Rose was to receive this land grant? His son James Rose was born Jan 13 1778.? He was 5 when his father died.? I descend from James.
