Benjamin Mancuso was born in the 1880's and married Margaret Davis, who was born in 1889 in Manhattan, NY. That is sadly the extent of my knowledge of them so far. I have a picture taken of them in their living room in 1961 and it was noted on the back that their address was 16 Arnold Rd in Poughkeepsie. I also know they had a granddaughter named Stephanie. It is also possible that they were members of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Can anyone help? Kari Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. First, I know none of the PCZ people at all. However, if there are persone interested in knowing more about the building of the CANAL--I recommend a marvelous book on this subject-- It is The Path Between the Seas by David McCULLOUGH. 1977.Published by Simon and Schuster.ISBN0-671-22563-4. This book is such a good read-especially if one likes history to some extent-that I read it twice and just won't part with it. One of the fascinating aspects was the MEDICAL story, combating the malaria and mosquitos and sanitation. DR. GOETHALS was the head physician and I had learned about him in high-school biology when we studied about disease- transmission. Great book. For those who knew people there, the book gives marvelous insight into what made this all possible. TO LISTERS and Denise; A few years ago I was researching in Otsego,Delaware, and Broome Counties in NYS. A close friend in New Berlin, Chenango Co.,N.Y. and a D.A.R. member,Jean Frink, , had written to me before I left my home in CA. to suggest that, if I had never researched yet at the NY State Historical Society in Cooperstown, Otsego Co.,NY.--that I might like to try that as it had LOTS of microfilm , is a library, and has a large collection of older NYS. newspapers. I was wanting to see NYState Censuses among other 'wants'. Well, that year, I spent four [4] consecutive days researching at that Library. I have never seen much on Rootsweb about this location and many NYS researchers are missing a good bet. YOUR INQUIRY mentioned NYS Censuses. At that time, I was tracing an EVERETT family to pinpoint their migration among nearby counties.. At the Library, I was able-on-site-- to seek them consecutively on 1850-1855-1860-1865-1870.etc.. I was astonished because all other places have one or two of the state censuses but not in this consecutive pattern. ALL were on microfilm so there was that time needed to do this. But I found what I needed. Maybe I was just lucky in the scope of that search. Have any of you spent time researching in that Library? They no doubt do NOT have what NYG andB. had because their existence is newer. But well worth a visit. Since then, I happened NOT to have gone back and am not aware of their current on-line holdings,if any. They were most helpful locating items in the Library holdings , making suggestions, and encouraged me to write , or call, if I needed more after I went home. They will arrange a fee schedule for inquiries that they will try to fill. There is a daily-fee to use this Library: It may-then- have been $8.00 per day. However, I had taken with me basic descendancy-sheets ,Family-Group Sheets etc. for my 4 grandparents [I do not use a genealogy-computer-program] and asked if they would like copies for their files. They were very pleased to get more info. on these old NYS. families. AND, they returned my first-day $8.00 fee and did NOT charge me for the other 3 days! I heartily recommend this Library . Besides, the Cooperstown area is absolutely beautiful to just go and visit. Please allow plenty of time. One cannot run in, ask a few questions, and go away satisfied.. To Denise Jones and others : The GODFREY Library, with MANY Databases can be visited without charge for some of their databases. The Library itself is located in Middletown, CT.and was incorporated in 1947.......... The url is www.godfrey.org. .......... .I believe they 'partner' ,also, with www.familysearch.org Since this Library's location is adjacent-so to speak- to NYS as well as Long Island and the New England States--the Library is 'heavy' on these areas, Denise. I, also, have 1600 and 1700 ancestors from New Amsterdam and Long Island / New Haven Colony---who worked their way up into Westchester, then Duchess Co.,then on up the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys. Let me tell you of ONE of their very useful databases, for example, for very early NYS. researchers which I have mined and am still using extensively: About the late 1890's, the New York Geg. and Biog. Society hired a well-known researcher / author of early Westchester Co.when it was NOT a county but just called Westchester-William S.Pelletreau, to 'read' the old NY/ New Ansterdam original WILL-books which were where? Sorry, I do not know, but originally were in the New York [city] Surrogate's Office and at White Plains ,NY. I n these late1800-earlier 1900's this was the kind of really good-genealogical work that the NYGBS was famous for accomplishing. These books-the earliest over 200 years old when Mr.Pelletreau was hired, were not in good shape-especially the earliest ones. Those remnants-if possible-were copied as they appeared-and damaged- with some readable surnames and words. Then he continued ,chronologically, to EXCERPT all those early WILLS from New York to ,I think 1800. To realize the importance of this body of work--one must remember that because of the early Dutch, English, French, and Spanish SEA-TRADE and wars going on at this time around the Atlantic Ocean and up and down the east-coast of N.America-- where would all these people choose to go for legal business? To register WILLS, Property Transfers, etc. Often, either London or New Amsterdam / New York [city] were chosen. Holland less so-it appears. it amazes me, as I researched through 1660-1730,........the places people came from to Record their business in 'New York: Jamaica ,the Antilles , and all over the Caribbean Islands; up and down New Jersey and the Chesepeake; eastern Pennsylvania ; ;Long Island; Rhode Island; the lower Connecticut River; England and Holland. Obviously--ocean-going- business brought people here and it was convenient to also take care of other personal business at the same time. There were many inter-family-connections for me to find here in these WILL-extracts --by looking up the maiden- surnames of wives when I knew them and verifying places and locations which had not been clearly known--to give two examples.. On-site at Godfrey Library --in hard-copy--there are the ' 'BOSTON'Transcript' newspaper-genealogy columns [1890-1933 or so] and the famour CT. BARBOUR Collection. I live in CA., but have writteb ti Godfrey and arranged for Look-Ups from these most valuable collections. Although the GODFREY Library is NOT as well-known as NEHGS -to which I DO subscribe] or Ancestry.com [to which I do NOT subscribe on ethical grounds]--I find it very easy-to use and the best internet investment I have made. There are 4 Levels: I happened to select Level 3 of 4 levels and it is $80.per year. Level one may be 'no charge' but not sure as more may be accessed as a guest . Author: FredSieber Surnames: Reynolds, Gillett Classification: census Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.dutchess/5530.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is an Alva Reynolds in the 1830 census Middlefield, Otsego, page 5. He is next to Joel Reynolds, and also in the same town is Culver Gillett, who married Lydia Reynolds. Lydia and Joel are brother and sister daughter of David Reynolds who lived in Dutchess. So Lydia and Joel, as did the Gilletts, moved from Dutchess to Otsego (a lot of people did). Since Alva is there it is likely he might be closely related and also from Dutchess, but I have not found much of anything on him, but I have not spent a lot of time on it. Look on the maney tree and related trees for information. If you have since you posted this found anything, please reply back. Thanks.
