Hello Everyone, I was really glad to find this Mailing List it should be very interesting. I am searching my husbands side of the family which is Wedyke. The surname is Wiedijk in the Netherlands. I found this out from a very nice man on the Netherlands Mailing List. I am so glad he told me that because when I went to the Library of Michigan to do research I found a book called, "Dutch Immigrants in U.S. Ship Passenger Manifest, 1820-1880". I found my husbands ggggrandfather and his whole in the Manifests. I was so excite I can not tell you. If I wouldn't of known how to spell our surname I would of never found them. So I am glad I had subscribed to the Netherlands Mailing List. Now, the dates are right on so I am really sure this is his family. They arrived in the U.S. on 06/05/1846 here is some of what it said. It said that their origin (country) was Netherlands, Dutch, Holland, they departed from Rotterdam, Netherlands, the port they arrived at was New York, occupation of my husbands gggggrandfather was Farmer, Landsman, peasant, Agriculturalist, Countryman. The following are the names of all that came over starting with my husbands gggggrandfather, Joris. Dirk is my husbands ggggrandfather. Wiedijk, Joris age 56 Wiedijk, Jannetje age 34 Wiedijk, Dirk age 09 Wiedijk, Klaas age 06 Wiedijk, Guurtje age 02 Wiedijk, Jannetje age 24 This is Joris's sister If anyone knows the English spellings for the first names of especially of Joris I sure would appreciated the help. Dear Kathy, The English equivalent of "Joris" is "George". "Jannetje" is "Jane", and "Claas" is the short form for "Nicholas". Kathy, Joris = George Jannetje = Jane or Janet Dirk = Richard or Theodore Klaas = Nicholas Guurtje = I suspect this is a mistranscription of the handwritten Geertje or Giertje. Both mean Gertrude.
