Hi - I am a new member and would like to tell you about my NY Dutch ancestors. I hope one of you will be able to give me hints on where to search for information. My ancestor, Johann Wilhelm Hülskämper, was born in Mimmelage (a small village near Badbergen), Hannover, Germany on 5 May 1797. He moved to Monnickendam, North Holland before 1822 when he was a witness at a marriage. He married in Monnickendam on 25 May 1823 to Juliana Hoppe. She was born in Monnickendam in September 1793, the daughter of Jochem Andries Hoppe and Grietje Jacobs Wülk. I have found 2 children of Willem (as he was known in Holland) and Juliana born in Monnickendam: Jan Arend b. 6 November 1823 and Grietje b. 25 March 1825. There may have been other children born elsewhere. Both Willem's uncle, Dirk Hulskemper, and his brother, Harmen Hulskemper, were also residents of Monnickendam. Willem and his family arrived in NYC on 7 August 1845 on board the ship Angelique from Amsterdam. They were listed on the manifest as: Willem Hulskemper, 47, "Taylor", Hannover Juliana Hulskemper, his wife, 50, Netherlands Johan Arend Hulskemper, 21, "Taylor", Netherlands Dirk Hulskemper, 18, Netherlands William Hulskemper, grocer, on Grand was listed in the NYC Directories from 1849 to 1851. He was listed in the1865 Elizabeth, NJ directory as a grocer at E. First. He apparently had died after the directory had been published, because his death certificate gave his death date as 26 December 1864, Elizabeth, NJ. William's son, my ancestor, Johan Arend (aka John A.) Hulskemper, was married on 23 September 1849 to Mary Helen Brickwede. Mary Helen was born 2 December 1829 in Grönloh (a small village near Badbergen), Hannover, Germany. John A.was naturalized on 12 November 1859 in NYC and was listed in the 1860 NYC census, 17th ward, as follows: John Heulskimber, 36, tailor, Holland Mary " , 37, Germany Julia " , 9, NY, in school William " , 6, NY, in school He was in the 1863/4 NYC Directory as a cutter on First, but by 1866 he had also moved to Elizabeth, NJ. John A. and Mary Helen weren't married in Holland, but were they married in NYC or did he go back to his father's home town in Germany? They had 3 children born in NYC...where were they baptised? Does anyone know which church a Dutch immigrant living in the 17th ward would have belonged to? Karen Wolzanski
