    1. [NYDUTCH] A puzzle
    2. Diane Graham
    3. I am new here, and have been lurking for awhile. The list seems very quiet, so I will throw this one out to see if anyone can help me. (An example from another list...I had a surname that I searched for many years. Muckendue. Never found it. Finally, someone told me that it was the Scottish name McIndoe. Of course! Why didnt I see that.) I have lots of names in my background that tie into the early upper New York people. (Quick, Cole, Wells, VanAuken, Van Garden, DeWitt, Westbrook etc) One of my surnames that tie into these lines is ROLFSMITH, or RHOLFSMITH. Could this one be a sound alike? Is there a name from the early Dutch communities that would be similar in sound when spoken, but spelled incorrectly to fool me (and others from this line) since 1747? I have never found anyone who recognizes or ties into a family name of Rolfsmith. The specific woman in question is my gggggrandmother, Catherine Rolfsmith. William CRAWFORD b. 1731 in New Jersey. He lived in New Jersey, Minisink, and Pennsylvania. He was in the Revolutionary War, and was a POW at Ft. Washington. He married Catherine ROLFSMITH in May of 1764. She was born May, 1747. She is supposedly the third wife of William Crawford. If anyone may have a suggestion of a sound-alike name, that might be substituted for Rolfsmith, I would be so happy to hear. Thanks for any help. Diane, in Iowa

    2. Ton van Heusden
    3. Dear Greg, Sounds great! I suppose the group is willing to sort out your whole family in one go :-) Appearantly you are a newcomer to this group. It is always appreciated when you provide some information about this family as far as you have done some research already. Also it is helpful if you would ask more precise questions about a particular person. Something like: Mr Whatever Bowne was born in somewhere at a certain date, was married and then ask about parents or children. Also if you know the original Dutch name might be helpful too. Immigration dates etc. Anything rather then just asking in the blind for everything. People are much more willing to help that way. Looking forward to some more info. 1. [NYDUTCH] BOWER(S) death cert. in Lockport, Niagara county
    2. Paula Van Huystee
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm new to this list. Thru the census lookup list I have learned that my great-great-uncle Leonard Bowers (Leendert Boer) died in Lockport, Niagara county between 1900-1910. His wife Martha died there between 1910-1920 (at least 91 yrs old, born in England). Leonard was born in Holland in November 1828 and came to the USA in 1848. He was a ship's carpenter by trade. Is there a way to find out when exactly they died and perhaps get a copy of the death certificate? I know I could ask the dept. of health to search for them but that would involve research fees and I am trying to avoid that ... I don' really need a copy of the certificates as long as I know what is in them and I have the cert.number/source. Any suggestions? Thank you, Paula in the Netherlands _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

    1. [NYDUTCH] Van Raalte of N.Y. City
    2. Hello, I'm Jim Oien and new to the list. I'm searching for my in-law ancestor, Moses Van Raalte (b. 1828) who arrived in New York City in 1850. I don't know if he immigrated alone or with his parents. He would have been 22 years old at that time. The census records show that he was employed as a segar maker and he and his parents were from Holland. He married Henrietta Seehof who immigrated from Prussia in 1852. They had one daughter, Helena, born 1868 and sometimes listed as Lena. Helena was a very interesting lady and I have much information about her. I would like my grandchildren to know more about their Dutch ancestry. I'm hoping to find Moses 'parents and where in Holland they emigrated from. I would appreciate it if someone could steer me in the right direction. Thank you Jim Oien Georgetown, MA.
