    2. Heidi and Richard, Pearson's Genealogies of the First Settlers of Albany and his Genealogies of the Descendants of the First Settlers of the Patent and City of Schenectady show Teunis W. Slingerland as the son of Wouter Slingerland and and Elisabeth Van Der Zee. The family lline according to Pearson is as follows: Antoni (Teunis) Cornelisse Slingerland (the emigrant) mrd. 1) Engeltje Albertsz Bradt. son; Arent Teunis Slingerland mrd. Heidi, You say below that Douwe was mrd. to Rachel Bogart......unless there was another gal of the same name, Rachel Bogart was his mother. Best, Cynthia Z. 3. Saw this book review in the NY Times. Thought it might be of interest to some who love to learn about Victorian Times. Lorraine Iervolino Inside the Victorian Home By Judith Flanders "Are we really that far from the underlying assumptions of domestic life in the Victorian age?" asks Alida Becker, an editor at the Book Review. "This is just one of the questions raised by Judith Flanders's" book, "a nimble compilation of the sort of social history to be found not just in public archives but also in popular novels and advice manuals, private correspondence and newspaper advertisements, arranged in chapters devoted to particular rooms in the typical mid-to-late-19th-century middle-class English household. ... [M]arshaling an array of suggestive details and juicy quotations, she turns us into voyeurs and eavesdroppers, then gives us plenty of room to read between the lines." Through letters and diaries, "we come to understand in a much more immediate way the daily impact of Victorian codes of etiquette, theories of disease, standards of hygiene, fashions in cookery and methods of child-rearing," says Becker. During this era, the "the idea of home" evolved, becoming "a refuge from the outside world. ... The house, in other words, was to become 'an expression of the morality that resided within.' That morality may have been expressed in different terms, but it's hard not to see its shadow stretching into the 21st century."

    1. Re: [NYDUTCH] Dyckman, Dikeman
    2. Charlotte, A little more information would be helpful. What is the time period, what are their first names, what were the towns/cities they lived in these states? What is the earliest Dyckman you have located so far? I believe the earliest Dyckman in the New World was Cornelius Dyckman b. ca. 1647. He and his family lived for several years in Schenectady and after the 1790 massacre they relocated temporarily at Bergen, NJ, where their son Nicholas was born in 1692. A couple of years later Cornelius Dyckman bought a farm in the Bloomingdale section of Manhattan. This Cornelis and his wife, Jannetie Dircks, had at least 5 sons. Perhaps the ancestors you are searching come down the line from this family. Tell us more. 1. Re: [NYDUTCH] Dyckman, Dikeman
    2. Dyckman and Dikeman are very common names in the areas that you mentioned, especially in New Amsterdam and New York. You will need more than just a last name to establish any relationships. Do you have any first names? If not, you will have a very difficult time trying to trace a family line.
