    2. Can someone please tell me the difference between the discussed topics of this list and those of the Dutch-Colonies list. I am currently a subscriber to the Dutch-Colonies list and have been since 1996. Some very in depth data has been posted to this list and very informative discussions have taken place over these past years involving early Dutch settlers to NY (Long Island, New Amsterdam, Ulster Co etc...all now archived under Dutch-Colonies.) I don't think we need to duplicate these lists nor do I need to subscribe to two on the same subject. The Dutch Colonies list has (at last count) over 1000 subscribers many of whom are true scholars of these early families. Most of us have tied up many of our loose ends with the help of these people! Just curious! : -) Susan

    2. Sue Martin
    3. Hi, My gr-grandmother was NY Dutch, and her name was Juliza Cook, which originally was supposedly spelled Koch. She claimed to be born in 1849 in Granville, Washington County, NY, but she's not on the 1850 census. She married John J. Turner in 1865 in North Adams, Berkshire, MA, so I suspect she lied about her age and was actually born in the last half of 1850. Witness to her will in 1904 was an Oscar Cook who might be her brother. I found an Oscar D. Cook born 1842 in Granville, NY to Daniel Cook and Sarah Lee. He m. 1873 in Salem, Washington, NY Alcesta Sevia Williams. The 1850 census for Granville shows: Chester Lee, 38 Sarah Cook, 34 Oscar Cook, 6 May or Mary Cook, 4 Sarah Cook, 2 Seneca Milan [looks like], 16, farmer. I suspect that Chester Lee was Sarah's brother, and have no idea what happened to Sarah's husband Daniel Cook. If he died before the census date, Juliza could still have been born soon afterwards. I have not been able to find parents for Daniel Cook [born about 1816, the year his wife was born]. I don't know the year of emigration, either, but know there were VanderKoeks in Cooks Corner, Franklin, NY and Cohoes, Albany, NY and Vandercooks in Cooksborough, Rensselaer, NY early on. Sarah and Chester Lee may possibly have been Seneca Indians. My grandmother's name was Margaret Nathalia Turner, so I'm looking for a Nathalia Koch/Vandercook that might connect to this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sue Martin

    2. My Surname interests are : Van Etten (ca 1800, Ulster Co NY) and Besomer...same area...this may be a German name. I think listowner (?Cathy) has said her primary interest for list is direction of Dutch arriving in NY in 1800's or later. I think my Benjamin Van Etten, who md Cathy Besomer around 1800, was descended from the " original " (?Jacob?) Jansen von Etten ..of the 1600's, but I can't get back beyond my Benjamin of 1800, so thought I'd post for anyone else who may have knowledge of same. Jeannette

    2. Mr. Henderson, Saw your request for listing address for Dutch Colonies, and am also interested in same.....but also saw two surnames you are researching, and I am also interested in them. 1) I have Van Etten (spelled variously Vannetten VanAtta, etc.) who I am researching, specifically Benjamin Van Etten, who lived in Ulster Co (?Rochester TWP) NY 1800, supposedly md Cathy Besomer. There were several Benjamin Van Etten's so have not been able to narrow down to mine. Would you have any connection to this time frame, area and this name? 2) I have a Mary Henderson (? of Essex Co NJ?)who md Charles Chamberlain, in 1830 in Newton, Essex Co NJ. Would you have any connection there? Jeannette

    3. Susanne, You may be pointing me in the right direction. The only source I have for my ancestor's first name is from her husband's records, and as he was German, he could well have used the Americanized form. I don't have any official records. The same source does say her father's name was Lawrence, and she named one of her sons that. She named another Nicholas. He was never called Claas as far as I know, but his son Nicholas was. Are you saying that Neeltje's father and maternal grandfather were both Schermerhorns? Were they related? Do you have any dates for the younger Neeltje? I have Ellenor b. April 22, 1781. That would be consistent with the birthdates for Laurens and Geesje. Do you know anything else about the family, like places? I have the very delicate and tattered page from her New Testament listing her children, but it doesn't have her name on it. That would have helped! Why didn't our ancestors think of things like that! I'm still looking for that discrepancy in the number of children in her records and her husband's records, but sorting out who she is and who her parents were would be a great start. 2. Hello all! I am researching the above surnames in Wayne County. I am rather new to Dutch ancestry and am glad to be a part of a list that will help me share what I find and learn more as I go. Please excuse the length of this email as I feel a rather long dissertation coming on. :) I originally began my research in Wayne county through my mother's BESHURES surname. (family story says this is a German or Dutch surname) Her parents had lived in Sterling, NY just North of Wayne County. I found her father's family in Hannibal, NY and then futher back to Wayne County where the line just stopped. I discovered that my gr gr grandfather George BESHURES had actually been born in the State of Ohio but both his parents were born in New York State. This told me that his parents had been in Ohio for several years and left the question. Where did the Husband go? Did he die or just disappear? I found George and his 3 siblings listed with their Mother Lucinda VANALSTYNE through census records living with her parents in Wayne County 1850. Lucinda's father was Abraham VANALSTYNE b abt May 1790 d 15 Jan 1873. Abraham, Lucinda, and two of the BESHURES children (as adults) are buried in The Old Livingston Cemetery in Wolcott, Wayne County. I find the reason for them being buried in this 'family ' cemetery was that Lucinda remarried to Jacob LIVINGSTON b Abt Apr/Mar 1808 d 12 Oct 1895. I have found no further information on Abraham or Lucinda but am continually searching. The underlying story to this must be epic as my paternal family has turned up Welsh, Scottish, and French! 3. Actually, what I had in mind was those immigrants who came later, primarily in the 19th Century. Like you say, DutchColonies-L addresses the earlier migration. The Dutch I am personally concerned with at this time arrived from the 1840's onward, settled in NY first and then perhaps moved on to other states such as WI and MI. If the discussion at times overlaps, so be it. I won't stop that, but I would like to stick primarily with the later migration. I'd like to make this more than just a message list dedicated to listing our Dutch Surnames. Posts, for instance, about why they immigrated to NY, the culture that was brought with our immigrant ancestors, their customs, traditions, marriage practices, naming practices, folklore, recipes, anything pertaining to the ancestors you are researching to make them fuller, more alive; rather than just names and dates, although those are very important to us individually. We have close to 60 members now and although I've noticed a few posts, I'd like everyone to at least begin with an introduction of the lines they are researching and the counties they are searching in. Although Wayne Co seems to be a hotbed of activity for the Dutch, there are other surrounding counties to be considered. Mine, for instance, also settled in Monroe. Basically, this list belongs to us all and although I am the Listowner as was pointed out, I intend to me a listmember, contributing where I can. If you do, however, have a problem, please e-mail me direct rather than making it an issue for the list. Let's keep the list fun and informative. That having been said, Glad you are all here! I hope we will all benefit from each other's knowledge. 3. Abraham CARLIER arrived with his wife and many children in 1852. The settled in Williamson, Wayne Co, although their descendants can now be found all over Wayne Co, particularly in Williamson and Sodus. The name CARLIER changed to COLLIER with Abram's son Jacob. The BRASSERs arrived in Jan 1844 at the port of NY and traveled by packet boat up the Hudson and over the Erie Canal until they reached Rochester in Monroe Co. The BRASSERs settled all over Monroe Co, and eventually some moved eastward into Wayne Co. The CLICQUENNOIs arrived in 1845. 3Ggrands: Abraham CARLIER m. 3. I'm new to this list. Looking for ancestors of Ellenor SCHERMERHORNE b. April 22, 1781. Some of what I know about her is well documented because I have original family documents. Some is speculation based on those records and information I've found from others. Another source gives b. 27 June 1809. Both my records and the other source show she married Henry BASTION, and the only child the other source gives matches one in my records. My records show her father as Lawrence, the other source shows Evert SCHERMERHORN and Elisabeth UNKNOWN. Because both the other source and I have matches on spouse and child, I assume we're talking about the same person. The rest of this is based on my information and speculation. My records show Ellenor and Henry (b. March 8, 1783) m. March 24, 1802. A page written out by the third son, Nicholas S.H. (my ancestor), gives their children as follows and says it's from his father, Henry's family records: Lawrence S. Bastion b. Dec. 13, 1802 John Bastion b. July 27, 1805 Nicholas S.H. Bastion b. June 11, 1808 Eliza Catherine Bastion b. March 8, 1811 2nd dtr b. oct 10, 1813, "died the same instant" Ellenor's Bible printed in Amsterdam in 1734, has a list which says "My children": Clarasa b. Oct 1, 1799 the children listed above, except that for the stillborn daughter it had "second" crossed out and "third" added Peter Y. Bastion b. 1815 Aug 3 Eve E. J. Bastion 1818 March 12 Helen Marie 1821 February 21 (the child the other source mentiions) I have no idea why the discrepancy in number of children. Clarasa may have been Ellenor's by a prior marriage. One might guess the younger ones died, but Henry was living with Helen and her family in Jackson Co. IN when he was 66, so at least she survived. Henry's family were German, and the immigrant was his father. I assume Ellenor's family was Dutch, based solely on the Dutch Bible. I assume NY connections for Ellenor because another source (not the one mentioned above) says Henry was born in NY, along with Nicholas and Helen. Don't know about the others. My records indicate Nicholas was born in Canajoharie, Montgomery Co., but I have been unable to find any inforrmation on Co. sites or 1790/1800/1810/1820 Co. census site for either surname. The family moved to IN in the early 1820's. Can anybody help sort out the discrepancies in either family? I have three generatiions before Henry, and much on Nicholas's descendants to share. Any help would be appreciated. Doris Waggoner Seattle ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
