I don't have any Van Kleek's from Michigan. The Michigan "Van's" that I do have are Henry Van Allen, Mary Van Allen, Louis Van Buren, Increase McGee Van Dusen, Emiline Van Nostrand, James Madison Van Nostrand, O.I. (Isaac?) Van Tassel, and Sarah E. Van Woert. I don't have much about them, but anybody is welcome to what I have. Frank Young

April: There is a Van Kleek -Van Kleeck Message Board On Ancestry, I know. My 4th G. Grandmother was Antonetta Van Kleeck, Wife of Moses Degraff. Which Van Kleeck is yours? I have a lot of info!! I don't have a lot on this family but I do know that Jeremiah, Leah's father, was the town clerk in Bayside, NY in 1789. He was born about 1737 and married Abigail Vanderbilt in 1755. My Gr Gr Grandfather was John Stoothoff born in 1783. the only John I have found born about that time was to Peter Stoothoff and Leah Vanderbilt. So far, I have been unable to prove that they are one and the same. Oral family history say we have Vanderbilts in the family. this is the only connection I have ever found. My goal is to prove/disprove the connection. ( I like to have my facts straight.) Where is Lyons, NY? I was originally from Albany county. Kathy, Joris = George Jannetje = Jane or Janet Dirk = Richard or Theodore Klaas = Nicholas Guurtje = I suspect this is a mistranscription of the handwritten Geertje or Giertje. Both mean Gertrude. Dear Cathy, The Kingdom of The Netherlands was not formed in one gettogether, but was shaped over the last 1000 years. In that time there were a lot of (strange) heirarchical structures. But the structure is best compared with that of the USA. Some provinces (Zeeland and Holland) formed a (business-)alliance (VOC), and other provinces (which were just states on their own) joined. The politics were very simple, just let everybody do what they like, as long it brings profit. So for the people the formation of The Netherlands was just that all the diffent kinds of money were thrown away and replaced by the Dutch Guilder (like the proces of the Euro last year). In a province every town, city or even a settlement of five people had it's own authority. So the mayor of Westkapelle answered directly to the province. Later on the town got less authority and the provinces more, but now even the provinces have almost no authority. All what can be placed central is placed central, so the penalty of stealing an apple is the same here as it is in Groningen. The most confusion comes from the names of parts of the country. Walcheren, just a name for the former island. As Zuid Beveland is just a name for an area, there are no exact boundaries and there is no government. On most maps, these names are not given. I just got my encyclopedia of my shelf: "Zeeland, province of The Netherlands, 2700 square km (1055 square mile) of which 1709 square km land (668 square mile). The province is made up of islands. In the Roman times, Zeeland was the point of which the Romans crossed the North Sea to the UK. The area south of the river Oosterschelde (runs throw Zeeland) was property of the count of Vlaanderen who lend it to the count of Holland in 1165. In 1296 Floris V defeated the nobles of Zeeland en Vlaanderen and Zeeland was joined with Holland. But in 1428 Philips van Bourgondie obtained Zeeland and it developed to a independant province. In 1577 Zeeland recognized Willem van Oranje as viceroy. In 1814 the province Zeeland was formed as it is today." The local authority is even more complicated... Greetings, Anne J. C. Thanks Anne. That must drive people crazy! And me, being such a stickler for detail, I'm always looking to "fill in the blank." I always have this urge, when receiving a town reference, to fill in the county/parish, state/province fields in my database and I guess, from what you are saying, this may not be possible in all instances. Anne, thank for sending this in. I have a great degree of problem ascertaining what is where in Zeeland. I haven't looked this site over fully yet, but I hope that it will tell us not onlythe name of the towns, but the areas that they were/are in. Does this site or can you give us the heirarchical geo-political structures for the Netherlands? (i.e. City/Town, Parish, County, State/Province as applies) Is there a website that addresses this totally? Thanks!!
