Hi Marty, When I hit a census problem where the surname could be transcribed in a number of different ways, I then enter the first name and the birth year +/- 5 years and the state of birth and the first few letters of the surname followed by an asterisk ... in the case of this family, I would enter dem* and the other information and see what kind of results I get. Sometimes, if I have the children's names, I will enter the one with the most unusual name, which might yield fewer search results to choose from. Sometimes I put the state and county, sometimes not. Depends on where I think they might be located. Hope this helps. I had been several years since I looked at the information I had on Harry. What I have cane from his sister in law. She had said she thought he or his family came from NY. The 1920 was not available when I got the information. I looked him up tonight and found he was born in NJ but his father Wilbur P Demilt was born in NY with his parents born MI and NY and his mother Ethel D Wahl Demilt was born in NJ with her parents born NJ and NY. I don't know where in NY as I could not find them in 1900 or 1910 as Demilt, Demelt or Demett. I also tried Demill and others but no luck. I don't know about NJ though. Mine have all been in NY so far. And I am back to 1810. They might have started in NJ but not sure about that. As for Harry, I have not run across him anywhere. > ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- > From: "mbacon3" <mbacon3@cfl.rr.com> > Reply-To: nydelawa@rootsweb.com > Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2006 10:15:27 -0400 > > >Could Demilt be a variant spelling for Demelt?
