Dear Pat: I'm getting into a systematic study/organization/list of questions for each of my family history files--gradually working my way to WHITNEY. But I wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten about getting back to you. How might we be related? Freeman and Amanda are a brother and sister of my great-grandfather, John Leroy Whitney (born 1834). There were 13 children in all, and I am trying to establish accurate birth, marriage, death dates for them. Do you have in your records that Freeman Whitney died Nov. 1, 1917 (my gr-grandfather wrote this in a letter; he himself died the following year, 1918)? About 7 or 8 years ago I located a newspaper article in The Bloomville Mirror about the fire in which Jacob and Nellie Whitney lost their lives--August 9, 1861. They were living in Union Grove, near Downsville. However, there was no inquest, no death record, no burial place-- all according to the Delaware County Clerk's Office. We think they may have been buried on the farm, since only bones were found after the fire, and no markers were placed. That area is now under water, of course, because of the Pepacton Reservoir. I'll be in touch a lot more (when I get to the whole file), but in the meantime, tell me who you descend from and how we're related. I'm always glad to meet another cousin! Sally Goodfellow
