    3. Marge, Records for NY State were not required to be kept until the 1880's. Even then most towns didn't start doing it until late 1890's, 1900's. You can find out more about this by going here: http://www.dcnyhistory.org/messick.html#3 There are also some great ideas on where else to look for this kind of information. The town of Masonville had some great clerks who kept wonderful data regarding parents, spouse and burial information from the 1850's and up.
