No, it was not. Until 1798 Cochecton/Cushetunk was part of Northampton County, with records in Easton, PA. Prior to 1752 it was part of Bucks County, records in Doylestown. None of the areas you mention were ever in Northumberland County or its predecessors, including Lancaster County. Northumberland County is a red herring. George mentioned that Wayne was formed from Northumberland and I corrected him. The evolution of the PA Cochecton area went from Bucks to Northampton in 1752 and then Wayne in 1798. You need the records from the Northampton County court house in Easton. The Cochecton/Cushetunk area was raw frontier and far from Lancaster County. Lancaster was already settled and it's unlikely that the 300 acres was bought on spec. It sounds more like a farm to live on (my guess). However, if he was a wealthy farmer he might well have bought land in Cochecton/Cushetunk (which is quite a way from Lancaster) as a speculation. The records for Lancaster County are extensive, and the Historical Society has many church and civil records in its care. For the 1760s, the records you are looking for would be in Easton, Northampton County. Don't be lured away from New York State. It is much more likely that a resident of Orange County, NY would buy land in Cochecton than a resident of Lancaster County, PA. There's a natural flow between the two areas. Orange and Sullivan (then Ulster) Counties are adjacent and there was much movement back and forth. Cochecton today is in New York State, and that's where I'd be looking if I were youl Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ed & Mary Yonan" <yonan@fgi.net> To: <nydelawa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 08, 2007 1:39 PM Subject: Re: [NYDELAWA] Land records inquiry about land in Coshechton > Dear George, Ann and John, > > Thank you very much for your help in explaining boundary changes for > counties and states which will have an impact on where I might find land > records for Coshechton in the 1760s. > > I did find some information on another mailing list several months ago that > Richardson Allison bought 300 acres of land in Donegal Twp of Lancaster > Co., PA on 12 Oct 1739. Dear Ann, Thank you very much for your clear explanation about the location of Cochecton/Cushetunk in Northampton County, PA in 1763. I will look for land records in Easton, PA.
