Hi Sally, The anti-slavery petition submitted to John Quincy Adams by Ebenezer Dan & Phebe Dan of Colchester was probably compiled in late 1838. Based on that date and location, Ebenezer could be: Ebenezer Dan II (1796-1872), son of Ebenezer Dan and Sarah Jones. This Ebenezer married Serepta Goodrich, and their two oldest children were Ebenezer III (1822-1896) and Phebe (1824-1910+). They all lived in Colchester during this time period. If the children were the ones who submitted the anti-slavery petitions, Ebenezer III and Phebe would have been precocious teens of about 16 and 14 years of age, but it's not clear from The Journal entry which Ebenezer Dan submitted the petition. It could be the father/daughter combination. Alhough the older Ebenezer Dan (1796-1872) also had a sister named Phebe, she was already married to John Goodrich -- and probably living in Cattaraugus County -- in 1838. It's for this reason that I believe the younger Phebe Dan (1824-1910+) is "the Phebe" who submitted the petition.
