The family is from New York, and he died about 1859 in Grant Co, Wisconsin. There are indications that John J SCHERMERHORN / SCHAMERHORN came from the area of Schoharie and Delaware counties in New York. His widow Caroline b. 1804, NY is listed in the 1860 census of Grant Co, WI with her sons Benjamin b.1832, NY; Hiram b. 1838, OH, and John b.1842. Jeremiah b.1835, NY is also apparently another son. He is married and listed with his wife in the 1860 census of Grant Co, WI. The names of the children are what leads me towards Schoharie and Delaware Counties. 1. Benjamin is not a common name in the SCHERMERHORN family. John R. SCHEMERHORN b.1752 moved from Albany Co, NY to Schoharie Co, NY. He and his wife Catharine KNICKERBOCKER had a son named Benjamin b.1782. They also had a son named John J.; but this is apparently not the John J. that I am looking for. 2. Hiram is more common in the SCHERMERHORN family, but still not common. The name Hiram also appears in the family in Schoharie County. 3. Similar is the name Jeremiah - Although I do not see one in Schoharie, the name does appear in both Greene County and Otsego County. 4. On of the most interesting connections is the name Adelbert. Adelbert is very unusual. Jeremiah b.1835 and his wife Margaret TINDALL named one of their sons Adelbert. Sarah Etta SCHERMERHORN b.1827, NY married Philo CROSS and they named a son Adelbert. They are listed in the 1850 census of Delaware Co, NY and moved to Iowa and then to Kansas. Sarah Etta was the daughter of Peter SCHERMERHORN of Schoharie Co, NY. Her mother was Abigail b.1793 (daughter of Jacob T. SCHERMERHORN and Sarah SHUTTS). That's all I can find to this point connecting John J SCHEMERHORN back to this area of New York. More on John J. SCHEMERHORN - These are the only records I have found on him: 1852 State Census Clayton Co, IL: John SCHAMERHORN Male (5) Female (1) 1855 State Census Grant Co, WI: John SKEMMAHORN 1858 Land Grant, Grant Co, WI: John J SCAMMERHORN I have not been able to find him in the 1840 or 1850 censuses, and do not know the year of his birth. From the places of birth of the children, it is evident that the family moved shortly after 1835 from New York, and made stops in Ohio and Iowa before settling in Wisconsin. They may have also been in Michigan and Illinois. The birth place of his son John b.1842 is listed in the 1860 as Michigan, the 1870 census as Illinois and the 1880 census as Ohio. Appreciate any assistance. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
