I do NOT have any of these families,. BUT, since K.POWELL mentioned the town of Catherine in Schuyler Co., that jogged my memory a bit, as follows. Catherines-was formed from "Newtown" [now Elmira in Chemung Co.This happened in March 1798, so after that ,persons on census in that area would be in Catherines, which is a TOWNSHIP of Catherine and there is a small village named Catherine, also. This means [if you are not familiar with the Township set- up of government in the US Colonial States ] that you might find records in 1--the County Courthouse in Watkins Glen 2--the Township Offices for Catherine 3--the Village Offices where they resided ,if the hamlet was large enough to even have an office and IF they resided there, actually. TRY THIS: The Historical Soc. Bldg. and RECORDS for Schuyler County are housed there and that is in Montour Falls,NY.. The county Historian is Barbara BELL. You might write there, give as much info. as you have [names, dates, places in particular, make a 'starter' donation to cover postage and time, etc. ] and see what that brings forth. To K.POWELL--I do not have Ancestry .com but am guessing from your answer that you might. I am using a NYS Finger Lakes MAP, and French's Gazatteer of NYS [1860], and a ruler [smile]. Since you found Alexander at Horseheads, and that is about 12 miles southwest from the Schuyler Co. southern border with several hamlets in between there and Catherine TWP.{ and is in the TWP. of Veteran [Chemung] } was there any other lead on the 1855 Census that might be helpful to this researcher? I think your Alexander was enumerated at Horseheads, Chemung, on 1855 NY State census in William's household, although 1860 Catherine which has been lopped off and is now Schuyler Co, has a similar household with a William and "axcie" who say they're from CT. Through a series of marriages a descendant of Catherine Campbell married a Shappee and a Shappee had married Shoemaker Hill's widow there in Chemung Co. I have other Campbells in Chemung County, one of whom married one of "my" McKinneys. I have Stewarts down in Delaware County, one of whom married one of "my" Cooks. I am clueless if any of your Campbells or Stewarts have any direct relationship with those I'd found. > Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2008 20:09:15 -0500 > From: joycelr@aol.com > Subject: [NYDELAWA] CAMPBELLs of Stamford and Andes > > Don't know if there's anyone out there with a?connection?but > periodically I > post in the desperate hope that someone will have that one key to > help me > open up a brick?wall...... > ????
