    3. Who knows? The name Menzo was pretty big for about 10 years back in the mid-nineteenth century. I've got one of those, plus a Philander. As nearly as I can tell, both names vanished pretty quickly. 1. Re: [NYDELAWA] Jonathan Carley, Jr - Sidney
    2. There is Federal Census information for the State of Illinois in 1860, town of Loraine, Henry County, for a Jonathan Carley, b 1784, NY and wife Eliza, b. 1786, NY and another listing directly above his for a William Carley, b. 1829, NY and wife Susan, b. 1830 in IL. We believe this Jonathan to be the son of Jonathan and Jenny Gray Carley, the couple who settled in Sidney in 1796, (William's children in his second marriage noted in the Census of 1870 mentions a daughter Jenny) --- but-- there is supposedly a DAR War of 1812 marker placed on the grave of a Jonathan Carley buried in Sidney which could not have been for Jonathan, Sr, as he was so badly wounded during the Rev War that he was unable to serve in later call-outs for that War, and consequently would also have been unable to serve in the War of 1812, asking the question --- Who is the Jonathan with the marker -- if it is Jonathan, Jr, was he brought back from IL to be buried in Sidney? -- is this a wrongly designated marker for Jonathan, Sr, who should have a Rev War marker? --- or is the marker merely a commemorative for Jonathan, Jr, who may be buried in IL? Also, does anyone know who the Eliza, wife of Jonathan, Jr., might have been? Thanks for any input - Judy Schreiber Valdosta, GA

    3. Hi Carol, Do you know the names of any of Joshua Pine and Anna Amelia Sherwood's children? I have not found a wife named Anna for any of my Joshua Pines, but I also don't have wife names for two of my Joshua Pines. I have 3 Joshua Pines in my files. They are: - my 4th great-grandfather Joshua Pine who was married to Margaret ? Pine. He died before 1818 and had the following 6 children: Joshua (1799 - 1888), Charles (circa 1803 - 1865) who married Mira (?), Alfred (circa 1807 - ?) who married Phebe Patrick, Margaret (circa 1810 - 1900) who married Richard Patrick, Mary (b. before 1818), and George (b. before 1818). - my 3rd great-granduncle, one of the children listed above (circa 1799 - 1888). He was b in Delaware County. I don't know who he married, but I believe he may have had a daughter named Caroline (based on 1850 census). In the 1855 NY state census he has no wife listed, and he is not listed as a widow. One Hannah Pine, my 2nd great-grandaunt is enumerated with him and is listed as his niece, as she is in other censuses. - my 2nd great-granduncle who I know almost nothing about. I found him in the 1850 census listed as a 10 year old in my 3rd great-grandfather, Alfred Pine's household. Now on to Peter St. John. Again, I have 3 Peter St. Johns in my files. - I have a 5th great-grandfather b. 11 Jan 1726 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, CT, died 4 Jan 1811 in Walton. He married Mary Cook circa 1761. They had 11 children, Peter, Hannah, Elizabeth, Lydia, Anna, Cook, Rachel, William, Rebecca, Ezekiel, and Joseph. I have NO SOURCES for any of this information. It was given to me by a cousin and I have not yet verified any of it. - I have a 4th great-granduncle Peter St. John b. 30 Oct 1762 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, CT., died 28 Jun 1824, I don't know where. Again, I have NO SOURCES for any of this information. It was given to me by the same cousin and I have not yet verified any of it either. - I have a no-blood-relationship Peter St. John b circa 1823 in CT, married Cynthia (?) circa 1848, who had one son Levi b. circa 1849. I got all of this family information from the Walton, Delaware County, NY 1850 federal census. I haven't followed him to his death. I don't know anything more about him than was on that one census. So, does any of this additional information fit anywhere in to any of your information for either Joshua Pine or Peter St. John? I look forward to hearing from you. Barbara Heard

    3. I'm not researching Pines, but recalled some info in the pamphlet (from the Del. Co. Historical Assn.) "The First Grandmother of Walton, N.Y. p. 7:"Joshua Pine, senior, a native of Hempstead, L.I., was a patriot of considerable means who had suffered for his patriotism by being thrown intro a British prison." p. 11 - a reference to a saber which was a gift from Marquis de Lafayette to Major John Pine p. 18 - "Four years later, at Newtown, Margaret remsen became the wife of Joshua Pine, Jr. and thereafter resided in Walton, where she and grandmother Margaret were often together. now I will read a letter, dated New York, August 15, 1817, written by Geroge Pine, to his mother, Margaret Remsen Pine:..." "In 1820, Margaret Remsen Pine's eldest child, Mary, married Robert North, Jr." The book is small and costs $5.50 + S&H. Didn't do much for my family history, but the bits and pieces may help yours. Not many references to Pines, but they were apparently intertwined with the history of the Norths and other early settlers. Exciting to be able to share the maiden name of Joshua Pine's wife and perhaps break someone elses brick wall. Enjoy.!!!
