    3. I have one taken of my Aunt's Mother - hard to discern face. AND NOW you're all going to think I'm weird - I took one of my Father - not Mother or anyone else. I wonder what that means. ----- Original Message ----- From: Pat Watts To: Rene' ; nydelawa@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2007 6:33 PM Subject: Re: [NYDELAWA] photos of the dead I, too, have a photo of a relative who was dead - I was told it was common practice at that time. 3. Hi everyone, There has been an interesting discussion going on another list regarding photos of the dead. Wondering how many of you have experienced this? In my families personal collection we have one of my grandfather's brother. He left home and hadn't been seen until he died which was about 10-15 years later. They wanted a picture to remember him by. This was in the 30's or 40's Here are a couple of websites for those of you who are interested. http://ame2.asu edu/projects/haunted/ISA%20index/book%20of%20the%20dead/book%20of%20the%20dea %20photos.htm http://billblanton.com/pm.htm Apparently it was very common way back when. 3. Hello Everyone, First I have to say that I'm sorry that I didn't catch the emails last night or this morning before things went a little too far - but I think I'm entitled to a break every once in a while. 2nd - I sent an email to Annette OFF LIST telling her that she sent her note to the list and that I was sure it was a mistake. It was. 3rd - I have this list set to "reply to list", this is because I feel that anyone replying to genealogical information that is posted from someone will someday benefit someone else - so I want it out in the open and on the list. Most of us are pretty email savvy and know how to copy and paste addresses if you want to reply just to the poster. 4th - This is a family friendly list. I expect all of us to treat each other as we would want to be treated - with respect. I do not and will not tolerate berating of others on this list. Doing so will cause you to be moderated and then removed from the list. Be open to what you are reading - realize that people make mistakes, there isn't one person among us who doesn t. 5th - If you have a problem with the list - contact me OFF LIST. Sending your grievance to the list unsolicited just causes more problems and wasted space. You can use my private email extracted from above or nydelawa-admin@rootsweb.com which is preferred. 6th - Please remember to delete the previous emails when replying especially if they do not pertain to anything - as this also uses a lot of space and is a nightmare for those of us who get digest mail. 7th - Please sign your emails either with your name, or nickname. This way we all get to know each other and come to know who is researching different surnames. That is all - now everyone play nice! Rene' NYDelaware List Administrator

    3. I'm so sorry folks, this was a mistake made by my sending this to the wrong address for a personal message to Rene'. She has deleted it for me, so again, I'm sorry for the mistake. Please forgive me and no need to pay any attention to it. It was meant in fun just for Rene' and indeed she returned the e-mail. 2. Jennie: The wedding announcement, which appeared in the Nov.18 issue of the paper and just list who married them at the parsonage and nothing else. I have a copy o that notice, since I was the person who recorded it for the Delaware website. Sorry that I can not help you in your other enquirers. Alan

    3. Need help. On the NYDElawa site, there are 2 references to the marriage of James Elliot and Emma Franklin. 1) Marriages from Delhi Republican Newspapers 1860 -1869 and 2) Excerpts from the Book '100 Years in the History of Delhi NY 1860 - 1960 Married 13 November 1865, in Andes These names do not appear on any other indexes or lists. Where can I find any additional record that would confirm, i.e.; his parents names, etc.that he is the James Elliot I am looking for. Thank you, Jeannie Coston

    3. Hello All ... Holidays are over with, the winter weather is now upon us and I am back at it. Trying anyway. Right in the middle of working on the website both our power and cable went out. However, all is fine now. Collin Haight has transcribed the West Davenport Cemetery (Charlotte Valley) and it is now online. Queries are up to date and the Search Engine had been re-indexed. In an e-mail recently, the following wish was stated: "I'd love to see more photos of the county that were taken during the forties, fifties, and sixties, the era I'm familiar with." How about it, folks? Do you think you have photos of this era tucked away in the closet someplace. We would welcome scans of them! Thanks! and keep warm! J. 2. In Volume 3 of The Wheeler Genealogy by Raymond David Wheeler, the author cites a reference as follows: "(Earl Wheeler, given by Susan C. Wheeler, Wheeler Genealogy [Hancock, n.d.])". Susan C. Wheeler (1837 - 1929) was my 1st cousin three times removed. Any lead toward tracing down this book would be greatly appreciated. Gary Wheeler Campbell, CA

    2. Ray LaFever
    3. I'm going through a mess of pictures that my late parents had and have found four pictures of a Lucille Carruthers (all as a little girl or teenager, I think). The pictures were all taken in a Colorado studio. I think I've managed to find out a bit about her and I think she has a Walton connection. Here's what I've found looking at some census records: A Mary Lucille Carruthers was born August 1893 in Colorado. In 1900, she was living with her mother and grandparents in Denver. Her mother was Jennie Carruthers. She was born in November 1869 in New York State. Her grandparents are Charles St. John (born Dec 1847) and his wife Kate (born Mar 1846). I found a Charles St. John on the 1860 census for Walton. His age seems right (13) for the Charles I found in Denver in 1900. His parents are William and Betsy Ann St. John. I think Kate St. John was a friend of my grandmother or of her mother, Kate Miller Barnhart, though I'm not sure. I would like to find a family member who might want to have these pictures of Lucille Carruthers. Any suggestions would help. Thanks. Ray LaFever Cohoes and Bovina, NY

    2. Patty Gaddis
    3. Marc, You can find deeds and indexes microfilmed by the Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City. Locate your local Family History Center and you can order the films for a small fee from SLC. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp to find the one nearest you. Use this link to see all the films of indexes and deeds for Delaware County. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=124485&disp=Deedbooks%2C+1792-1907++ You may have to cut and paste the URL in pieces. Or use the following steps if the above link doesn't work. Go to www.familysearch.org Click on yellow "library" tab at the top Click on "Family History Library Catalog" the next row down Click on "Place Search" in the list of ways to search Enter "Delaware" (without the quotes) in the "Place" box Enter "New York" (without the quotes) in the "Part of" box Click on the blue "New York, Delaware" lettering Scroll down to "New York, Delaware - land and property" Click on "Deedbooks, 1792-1907" Click on "View Film Notes" gray box in the upper right hand corner The film numbers are listed on the right hand side of the screen corresponding to the data on them listed on the left hand side of the screen. Grantors would be the person who sold the property, grantees would be the person who received the property. There are also mortgagor/mortgagee books available. There are instructions in the front of each book explaining how to find the different surnames. There is a code to it based on the first letter of the last name and then the vowels after that. Print out the sheet with the film numbers you want and bring to your local FHC to order the film. You must start with the indexes to find out which book and page the actual deed is recorded. I'll have to look, but I believe I may have copies of the map for Harpersfield to show you where the different lots were located at. That helped me to locate the current physical location of the property when I did my deed research on my Gaddis' a few years ago in Davenport, Kortright, Harpersfield and Meredith. Hope this helps. 3. Bonnie, Probably the best way to see the census records would be to get a library card with a library that has access to Heritage Quest webpages. I'm not sure where you are located. I have a Boston Public Library card that gives me access. Or, you can go to your local LDS Family History Center and they should have access to ancestry.com. 3. There is a Hugh McGuire who served from NY in the Revolution but, oddly, he doesn't appear to have ever applied for a pension. In 1840 Sarah Teneick had both a male and a female in the 90-100 age group in her household. -----Original Message----- From: Meadowland PTO [mailto:pto4us@verizon.net] Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2007 9:33 PM To: NYDELAWA@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYDELAWA] Unique Revolutionary War Vet in Delaware in 1840 Hugh Maguire (or McGuire as spelling varied back then), lived in Eastern Delaware (Davenport area) from just after 1800 until his death sometime after 1840. Hugh has a rather interesting story, as he was an estated Irishman who was force-conscripted into the British army about 1775, but detested the purpose and snuck away the first night encamped near New York City. He joined the American forces and fought the rest of the War on the other side. What I'm trying to discover is exactly when he died. I know he was living with the Teneick family for the 1840 census (Sarah as housewife) and was over 95 at that time; but I haven't seen his name on any cemetery records, for example. -Marc
