    3. Thanks for your input. It's the first one I've received. I haven't studied the regiment very much, and am thrilled at the additional info. It might account for Rufus Tompkins (unknown if he was a brother or cousin or no relation at all) of the same CO., also being shown as deserted on the same date. You're thinking then that he might not have deserted, but simply left camp early? Or would the impending move of the camp have been the perfect opportunity to desert? Family lore is that he went home to help his wife with a new baby (my great grandmother). He must have actually deserted or he wouldn't have been in Washington DC in 1865 being identified in a letter by a fellow soldier, would he? You've given me new things to think about. Will have to dig into the history of the 144th. Thanks again. Judy Not sure if you have gotten responses about your ancestor query or not, but the question is probably what happened in Feb of 1863, not April. On Feb 12th, the 144th moved from their camp at Upton's Hill (Camp Bliss) towards southeast VA. Rumors and possibly orders might have circulated widely the 11th, on which day he was said to have deserted. Your ancestor was in Co. E of 144th NYVI, the 'All Delaware' regiment. Robert J. 3. Wow. This is fantastic. What a wonderful idea, you will touch so many lives with this. It gives us all a better sense of it all - Thank You. Several years ago, I was in Hawaii on vacation with my husband, and we decided to go to the Arizona memorial - we had been there once before, but were only able to do the harbor cruise - this time we were able to go on the Arizona. It was Dec 7th. We were lucky enough to be with several vets. It is one thing to do the regular sight seeing "stuff", but quite another to do it with those who went through it all. I have never been so moved in my life as I was that day. It became real, not just something to see. That's what you have done Ed, is make it real for others. In our research we are always finding those who fought in the Civil War, and if we're lucky we can find our direct link to the Revolution, our goal to get that DAR or SAR status. But do we really stop and think about how it was? Sometimes this is what we need - to stop and take in all that we have researched, really think about it, give it life, not just some names and dates. We have to remember too, that genealogy doesn't just mean what happened 200 years ago, but it is also what is happening today. Things we remember, things that we did - this is all important - our descendants will want to know. Rene' List Administrator

    3. Please convey my thanks to Ed Davidson for his service to our country and for a wonderful commemorative CD. I've always been a WW2 buff, even though I was only 6 at the end of the war. 3. HI, Can someone help me figure out a record from the archives for my gggrandfather Jeremiah Tompkins. The record has number 1759 in the upper right hand corner. EP SIG is handwritten to the left of his name. I think that refers to enlistment. It shows on his M.I.R. line, August 30, 1862, Andees, mustered in September 27, 1862 Private, Co. E, 144th Inf. The middle part of the form, Left the Organization, shows: deserted Feb 11, 1863, Private, from Camp Bliss, VA " " " " " " " " Upton Hill, VA The part that confused me is handwritten in the left margin "MR Apr. 12/63 and below that is stamped M.O.R. The lower part of the form gives his birthplace and description. No problem with that, but what I don't understand is did they muster him out in April, two months after he deserted? I do know he was on trial for desertion in Washington DC in 1865 but can't find out the outcome or his date and place of death. His wife was in Iowa in 1868, marrying another man and starting a new family. Hoping someone knowledgeable in war history would know what might have happened in April 1863. Thanks for any ideas. Here is a link that explains it. http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/divorce.htm There is a bit of a work around but you can not do it from a remote location. If you REALLY have to have the information, some of it "might" be available in open records. Each of the County Clerks offices have a very large set of index books named "Index to Civil Records" or title close to that, I can't remember exactly. What you might get lucky and find are court transcripts of the messy stuff that led up to the divorce, like abuse, desertion, infidelity, child custody, the separation decree, or what ever. Those records are not sealed and you may look at them or get photocopies. It does take a lot of time because the indexes are surname only. So if you are working on AARDVARK vs AARDVARK you will find those records fast, but if it's JONES vs JONES, well you get the idea. I doubt that any of theses indexes have ever been filmed and I'm close to positive that none of them would be on-line, but you can learn a lot of the juicy details if you do find the cases. All parties are named, ages, dates of birth, addresses, witnesses, etc., etc. It will take boots on the ground though. 1. [NYDELAWA] Walton Researchers: Names in Doc Holley's Book
    2. Walton Researchers, The Walton Historical Society has just reissued "Recollections of a Country Doctor," the memoir by Dr. James A. Holley. In it, he describes his career as a Walton doctor from 1887 to the 1930s. Unfortunately, he did not name names! My great-aunt, Alice Dann DuMond, was a friend of Doc Holley's. She did "name names" in the margins of her copy of the book! Following are the individuals she identified. Surnames: BEERS, BRAYMAN, DEPEW, DUMOND, GREENWOOD, HOLLEY, KINCH, PROPER, ROGERS, SCHAUFLER On page 40, Doc Holley mentions that he purchased his practice from a Walton doctor-dentist in the winter of 1887. Alice writes "DR. GREENWOOD" next to that paragraph. [Possibly Dr. Edward D. Greenwood, later of Sidney.] Doc Holley says this man wanted to sell the medical practice in order to focus solely on dentistry. On page 42, Doc Holley writes about an 18-year-old girl named "Katie" who had fluid in her chest. Alice identified her as "KATIE DUMOND." No year associated with this story, but Doc Holley mentions that "Katie" kept the fluid he extracted in a jar to show to her friends. On page 50, the author of a poem written by Doc Holley's "son" is identified as "FRANK HOLLEY." Between pages 72 and 73, there is a great photograph of a woman with "Severe Case of Smallpox." She is identified as "MABEL BEERS DEPEW." No date associated with the photo. I am happy to scan this photo for a family member. It's a very clear portrait shot. On page 98, there is a complicated case of erysipelas. Based on my research (using a Masonic Roster) in conjunction with Alice's notes, I belive Doc Holley describes the death of [MORRIS] PROPER on 23 February 1912. The undertaker who handled Proper's body, WILL ROGERS, became ill from the same disease and died on 2 March 1912. As Rogers was dying, two men from the Masonic Lodge cared for him. One of them was "ANSON KINCH'S SON TOOK CARE OF ROGERS AND DIED" [probably Howard J. Kinch who died on 14 March 1912]. The second man was JOSEPH SCHAUFLER, whose wife became ill with the disease. There is a very detailed description of Mrs. Schaufler's recovery. Her first name was probably "Amelia." On page 111, Doc Holley describes the case of a Walton lawyer "who was committed to the state asylum after being examined by another doctor and myself." The lawyer talked his way out of the asylum and sued Doc Holley for $10,000. Alice identifies this man as "I. L. BRAYMAN" (probably Irving L. Brayman who died in 1916). This case merits 4 pages! These are all the names. If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy of the reissued book, you can do so for about $10 from http://www.WaltonHistoricalSociety.org, or at the Walton Big M. The original hardback book cost $1.50 when it was first issued in 1939! Best wishes, Carolee Inskeep

    3. I missed the original post but, if the problem is not being able to read a .doc file because you don't have Microsoft Word, there are a couple of free options you might consider in the future: First, Microsoft has a free viewer for Word 2003 documents that you can find on the download section of their web site. There is also an upgrade to it that supports the new Word 2007 format. Also, the free OpenOffice suite includes a word processor that can read and edit MOST Word documents. You can download it at www.openoffice.org. Other programs in the OpenOffice suite can read and edit Excel and PowerPoint files. OpenOffice can also export files in the PDF format. It's available for most operating systems. -----Original Message----- From: Joyce Riedinger [mailto:joyce@dcnyhistory.org] Sent: Sunday, January 28, 2007 6:12 AM To: nydelawa@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYDELAWA] pdf file Before anyone else sends in a pdf of the .doc file mentioned yesterday, please HOLD for now. Pa about the time she died. He is in the 1840 census there. It seems Aaron should be connected to the Meridith Baldwins. Does anyone know anything about Harriet or her maiden name???
