I know. I was just suggesting that some of the other Scots may have passed through Ireland en route to America. They certainly did not think of themselves as Irish. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Sue Lutz" <msl48335@mindspring.com> To: <nydelawa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 10:54 AM Subject: Re: [NYDELAWA] For the Scots, why Delaware County? > They would have been the Scots Irish...who came from the counties of > Northern Ireland.... > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Ann O'Hara" <yannster@ptd.net> > To: <nydelawa@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 10:17 AM > Subject: Re: [NYDELAWA] For the Scots, why Delaware County? > > >> There were Kilpatricks in Delaware Co. by 1800 and they certainly >> considered >> themselves Scots. The suggestions in several messages as to why Scots and Irish chose to live in Delaware County are thought provoking. I had relatives from Ireland who lived in Hancock and have no idea why. Winifred
In the case of my ancestors, Wights and Littles, they came here to Delaware County starting in the early 1810's, because one of the brothers had settled here. In general Scottish seemed to have come here because their economy was poor and many were distraught at what was happening with the Church of Scotland- too much heirarchy. Also, soldiers returning from the War of 1812 reported that there was a lot of opportunity. I think much of the preferential land along the Hudson had been already settled so they came on up to Delaware County.
In my research, I've found many, many Scottish ancestors of people here in Chenango Co. who had come directly to Del. Co. from Scotland. I've wondered why they came there and not over here or Otsego Co., and there must be a reason. There are so many of them that perhaps it was arranged back in Scotland and also perhaps there were family relationships not fully explored as yet. As for coming from Ireland, I've found at least three lines of mine who came from that area of Ireland known as where the "Ulster Scots" had settled. The Kennedys and the Edmonds were from Antrim and another family of McLaughlins came from Killalea, on the eastern peninsula of northern Ireland. My hunch is that they were Scots first and Irish second. I think they were all protestant as well, from what I can gather from the descendants. I would love to hear more on this subject ... is there anything in print in Delaware Co. literature on the Scottish settlements??? Sally Chirlin
They would have been the Scots Irish...who came from the counties of Northern Ireland.... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann O'Hara" <yannster@ptd.net> To: <nydelawa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 10:17 AM Subject: Re: [NYDELAWA] For the Scots, why Delaware County? > There were Kilpatricks in Delaware Co. by 1800 and they certainly > considered > themselves Scots. There were Kilpatricks in Delaware Co. by 1800 and they certainly considered themselves Scots. I am so sorry for the damage to your library. I visited it a few years ago looking for the Ogden family and told you of the David Ogden book telling of his capture by the Indians. He was related but not my direct line. Do you have his line in print? I can send you copy of what I have if you like. I've been curious about the same thing. My Scots ancestors arrived in Del Co about 1845 from Letham in Angus. I don't know why they chose Delaware Co either. I suspect they had friends or relatives from their village already there, but no proof. Would love to hear of others experiences in this research area. Thanks. Hello Sylvia, I found Gail's obituary in the December 28, 2004 issue of The Sullivan County Democrat (published in Callicoon, NY): Gail E. Gilmore of East Branch, a certified nurse's aide and a longtime area resident, died Friday, December 24, 2004, at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton. She was 54 years of age. The daughter of Frederick G. and Marjorie E. Whitcher Shutts, she was born December 9, 1950, in Olean. Mrs. Gilmore was a member of the East Branch Community Church; a member of the East Branch Water Company Board; an employee of the Roscoe Community Nursing Home; and a former Boy Scout leader. She is survived by her husband, William R. Gilmore Sr., at home; two sons, William R. Gilmore Jr. of Deposit and Aaron C. Gilmore of Walton; a daughter and son-in-law, Carole Ann and Jason McGlone of East Branch; her parents of Roscoe; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna and Donald Kunze of Maybrook and Debbie and George Kiakis of Oneonta; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Linda Shutts of Rock Tavern; three grandchildren, Jaden, Conner and Zoey; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the East Branch Community Church with the Rev. Paul Cicio officiating. Burial will be made in the East Branch Cemetery. I am looking for info on Jesse Sawyer and his son Harmon. The Delaware county History says, the came to Delaware County before 1800. What I need is proof of the children of Jesse and also the children of Harmon. Thanks for all and any help. Marilyn
I understand now. The ones I'm seeing for free are in the archives of the The Daily Star. Not on legacy.com The ones from April 2006 backwards to July 1998 are in the Star's archives for free. That's a bummer! I'm guessing that the fee is only $2.95 so that's not bad if you don't have a lot of them and one is really important.
