Hi Dennis, I don't have record of a Joel Dann, born circa 1820, among the Delaware County Danns. Our Danns emigrated from the Stamford, CT, area to Neversink, Sullivan County, NY in the spring or summer of 1802, continuing to Delaware County about 1809. Joel is probably connected to this line a few generations further back, and he's probably a descendant of Francis Dann (1660-1723) and Elizabeth Clason. Many of Francis & Elizabeth's descendants settled in Dutchess County -- where your Elizabeth Lee was born. You probably have the following item, but if not, maybe the locales would be useful to your research: From: "Proceedings and Collecions of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society for the Year 1901." Edited by Rev. Horace Edwin Hayden, M.A. Volume VII. Wilkes-Barre, PA. Printed for The Society. 1902. Page 192, "Marriage Records Kept by Rev. John Miller October 14, 1841, Joel Dann, of Abington, to Elizabeth Lee, of Greenfield. Sally I have been searching for information on a Joel Dann that was married to a relative of mine, Elizabeth Lee, who was born in 1815 in Dutchess co. N.Y. They were married Oct. 14, 1841 in Luzerne co Pa. Could this Joel be in your line and if so do you have any info. I have lots of info on the Lee line I would be glad to share. Hi Sally, Our ancestor, Ebenezer Dan, was born 21 July 1768 in Stamford, CT, and died about 1808 "at Neversink," Sullivan County, New York. He married Sarah Jones on 1 December 1790 at the New Canaan Congregational Church, CT. Sara was born 19 October 1773, probably in CT. She died 17 April 1845 in Downsville, Delaware County, NY, having married Isaac Wilson about 1809. Sarah is buried in the old Downsville Cemetery, by the covered bridge. Ebenezer and Sarah Dan had 9 children: Amariah, b. 15 November 1791, Ridgefield, CT; d. 20 August 1870, Virgil, Cortland Co., NY Sarah, b. 19 May 1793, CT; d. probably after 1840 in Colchester, wife of William Young Phebe, b. 9 April 1795, CT; died ?, wife of John Goodrich and possibly later a "Mr. Pond." Ebenezer, b. 19 September 1796, Ridgefield, CT; d. 5 October 1872 in Walton Enoch, b. 13 September 1798, CT; d. between 1850-1860, possibly in Deposit Asa T., b. 17 April 1800, Ridgefield, CT; d. 20 March 1965 in Walton Matthew, b. 10 January 1802 in CT; d. 31 May 1882 at Northfield (Walton) Darius, b. 13 October 1803, Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY; d. 8 September 1892 at Walton Harvey, b. 31 January 1806, Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY; d. 29 april 1862 at Downsville The "1796 Ebenezer" is my ggg-grandfather. I believe that he and/or his two oldest children are the ones who submitted an anti-slavery petition to The House of Representatives in 1838. Hi Sally, The anti-slavery petition submitted to John Quincy Adams by Ebenezer Dan & Phebe Dan of Colchester was probably compiled in late 1838. Based on that date and location, Ebenezer could be: Ebenezer Dan II (1796-1872), son of Ebenezer Dan and Sarah Jones. This Ebenezer married Serepta Goodrich, and their two oldest children were Ebenezer III (1822-1896) and Phebe (1824-1910+). They all lived in Colchester during this time period. If the children were the ones who submitted the anti-slavery petitions, Ebenezer III and Phebe would have been precocious teens of about 16 and 14 years of age, but it's not clear from The Journal entry which Ebenezer Dan submitted the petition. It could be the father/daughter combination. Alhough the older Ebenezer Dan (1796-1872) also had a sister named Phebe, she was already married to John Goodrich -- and probably living in Cattaraugus County -- in 1838. It's for this reason that I believe the younger Phebe Dan (1824-1910+) is "the Phebe" who submitted the petition. Carolee: I spotted this message and it alerted me to the fact that I've been out of touch with you for some time. First of all, did I ever send you a copy of the Dann Family History that I transcribed in 1997 from a manuscript in my grandfather's possession? If I did, fine. If not, let me know and I'll pop it into the mail for you. According to that write-up, Ebenezer (b. 21 July 1768) mar. Sarah Jones 1 Dec 1790 in New Canaan CT. They had 8 children, Phoebe being the 3rd (b. 1795), and my gr-gr grandfather, Harvey, being the last (b. 1806). None of the 8 children was named Ebenezer, after the father. Nor in Ebenezer's family was there a sister named Phoebe. So there's no question, if I'm looking at things right, that Ebenezer was the father and Phoebe was the daughter. However, I must have mistakenly deleted your first message without reading it, so I have no idea of the context you're talking about. Just to catch up, I'm now living in Charlotte NC, about 10 mins. away from my daughter. Moved here from Richmond last year. Here's my address and phone: Sally Goodfellow 8546 Brookings Drive Charlotte NC 28269 Phone: 704-947-1441 I'm shifting all my files, so at the moment I can't put my hands on our previous correspondence, etc., but tell me where you live and how we're related, if you don't mind. that was pretty interesting, I wonder if there is any way to find out Who the other 48 people of Colchester were. evelyn
In my post about Delaware County Abolitionists, I mistakenly referred to Phebe Dan as the wife of Ebenezer Dan. They are definitely not husband and wife, but they are either Ebenezer Sr. and daughter Phebe ... or Ebenezer Jr. and sister Phebe .... Perhaps the original anti-slavery petition would clear up this mystery? While doing a Google Book Search for "Ebenezer Dan" of Delaware County, I got a hit in "The Journal of The House of Representatives." Ebenezer Dan and his wife, Phebe, submitted at least one anti-slavery petition to the United States House of Representatives in 1839, and it was recorded in The Journal. There is possibly a second petition. The petition(s) were signed by 48 or 49 residents of Colchester, who were not identified in The Journal. The Journal does, however, list many more Delaware County residents who submitted petitions. I noticed this as I scrolled through the book. Does anyone know if these petitions survive? Any idea of where they might be housed? If you're interested in researching whether your ancestor submitted a petition, you'll have to do a Google Book Search for your surname (and get a corresponding page number) because the names are listed in no particular order in The Journal, and it's nearly a 1000 pages long. Google results listed the hit for "Ebenezer Dan" as "United States Congressional Seriel Set - Page 590," but the book is called: "Journal of The House of Representatives of The United States: Being The Third Session of the Twenty-fifth Congress Begun and Held at the City of Washington, December 3, 1838 and in the sixty-third year of the Independence of the United States." Printed by Thomas Allen. Washington (DC), 1839. [from pages 584, 587 & 590] Monday, February 18, 1839 "Memorials praying the abolition of slavery and the slave trade in the District of Columbia, the abolition of slavery in the Territories, the prohibition of the internal slave trade, and to be heard by themselves or countrymen in support of their petitions, were presented as follows, to wit: By Mr. John Quincey Adams: ... Of Ebenezer Dan and Phebe Dan and 48 others, of Colchester, New York; ... Of Ebenezer Dan and 22 males, and Phebe Dan and 27 females of Colchester, in the county of Delaware, State of New York." John J. O'Neil 1853-1923 W. Rutland, VT m. Clara Major (unk) lived in Roxbury, NY & is buried there somewhere. He was my gguncle & custodian of my grandfather Michael John O'Neill 1882-1946 who was educated in the Roxbury Schools. His father Thomas C. O'Neil 1857-1888 was killed in a train crash & his mother Mary Shea (Rees) O'Neill 1858-1883 died shortly after his birth. Any records of John J. O'Neil 1853-1923 that took care of an orphaned boy of 6 years old should be sought. For the Roxbury, NY school system had to be a plus for my grandfather. He graduated from Roxbury HS around 1900 & NYU class of 1904 with a degree of bachelor of science in civil engineering. For a number of years engineer for the board of water supply at the Ashokan reservoir. My father Donald Thomas O'Neill 1908-1948, the first of 7 children, was born nearby in Kingston, NY. A story is always never-ending when family history is involved. Your welcome page of the Delaware County NY Genealogy and History site stands out. Hope this posting has the same results. Would like to know where John J. O'Neill 1853-1923 is buried in Roxbury, NY & incidently found out on your capable site that he was a Grand Juror listed there in 1885. Jeff - I don't know if this ties into your Nehemiah but -- Jonathan Carley, an early settler in Sidney, Delaware Co., in 1795 -- He was born in Wilton, Fairfield in 1757. The father of the family died in 1758, wife remarried but children were taken by grandparents, John and Sarah Sherwood Carley, - Sarah was the daughter of David and Sarah Meeker Sherwood - and relocated in The Oblong - what was then Duchess County, NY -- Jonathan married a Jenny Gray in 1780 at what was then called Frederickstown. The Gray family had also come out of Fairfield Co about the same time as the Carleys. I have not been able to find the parents of Jenny but if your Gray family was located anywhere near Sidney, it might stand to reason that there was a familial relationship or some degree. I've contacted the list previously about my Batchelder-Rickard brickwall, but I also find the Delaware Co.-Fairfield, CT connection interesting. The ancestors of my 2 gr-grandfather, Levi Davis (Gershom, Joseph), who was born in Harpersfield October 10, 1821 and died March 24, 1905 in Jackson, MN, also came from Fairfield, CT. I would be glad to hear from anyone else researching this family. I only recently got back to working on the Davis side of the Davis-Batchelder family. Pat sp.gilles@insightbb.com
