    1. [NYDELAWA] Birth and Death Certificates in Colchester, NY
    2. Brook Lassie
    3. Hello List I am hoping that someone might be able to help answer a question. Yesterday my cousin was at the Courthouse in Delhi asking for birth and death certificates, and they told him that he had to go to the town where the person was born or died in order to obtain them. The ancestors that he is looking for lived in Colchester. He is curious to whether or not there is a town hall in Colchester, which would have these records, or should he be going elsewhere? Thanks for any help that you can give him, and have a nice day. Beth (Beers) Rupert

    3. Renee, Since you asked for help, here is some from North Carolina....but I grew up in Delaware county and have chased family history for years. Went back and looked at the Pepacton reservior records and found that Frelove was moved from the new Arena cemetery and resettled in the Margaretville cemetery. If you want to find the gravestone, it should be in the Margaretville cemetery. Arena is still under water and expects to be for many years yet. There were two Arena cemeteries the old and the new.... Will be glad to add anything more but this is a short answer. I had a number of my old family buried at Shavertown and then moved along with the rest. 3. It has been my belief that the words "New Arena" cemetery means that it was the newest one in Arena at the time the reservoir was constructed. Margaretville at the end of the line is the cemetery that particular person was removed to. So the person's grave you are seeking would be in Margaretville or the immediate vicinity. evelyn

    3. I recently found a diploma for DeWitt Ingalls from the Delaware Literary Institute. It was given at Franklin, NY on 19 June 1895. The Diploma is signed by Albert E. Lullard-Samuel J. White- and Charles H. Verrill. I found this behind an old picture of my Great Uncle Howard Miller. It is to big to copy but I would be willing to send a picture of it to anyone interested. I would also be interested in the connection to my Uncle if anyone knows. Beryl

    3. Renee there is a cemetary on the way from Downsville to Margaretville that is the sight where several towns that were flooded by the resevior had the ramains of those who were burried in the area. It has I do believe the town of Arena. (I would have been happy to check out the names for you. But I won't most likely be back in NY till the summer. I will try to get one of my sibblings to check but they are not into doing genealogy and most likely will not go out of their way. 3. Dear Folks, The recent blizzard of Scot immigrant folks led to this email, in which I am interested in information about James Wilson (1747-1830) married Jubah (1747-1838) and lived in the Shavertown area. I don't have much on this old family but James (1783-1868) was his son, also lived nearby. I show this James who married Rebecca, according to the old graves, as having nine children. If someone has some information on this family, I would be interested, and would share what I have on this family on down to my grandmother, Effie Edna Wilson Palmer... And sometime maybe we can talk of the McCabes, also part of the family Jeremiah Palmer

    3. Dear Pat: I'm getting into a systematic study/organization/list of questions for each of my family history files--gradually working my way to WHITNEY. But I wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten about getting back to you. How might we be related? Freeman and Amanda are a brother and sister of my great-grandfather, John Leroy Whitney (born 1834). There were 13 children in all, and I am trying to establish accurate birth, marriage, death dates for them. Do you have in your records that Freeman Whitney died Nov. 1, 1917 (my gr-grandfather wrote this in a letter; he himself died the following year, 1918)? About 7 or 8 years ago I located a newspaper article in The Bloomville Mirror about the fire in which Jacob and Nellie Whitney lost their lives--August 9, 1861. They were living in Union Grove, near Downsville. However, there was no inquest, no death record, no burial place-- all according to the Delaware County Clerk's Office. We think they may have been buried on the farm, since only bones were found after the fire, and no markers were placed. That area is now under water, of course, because of the Pepacton Reservoir. I'll be in touch a lot more (when I get to the whole file), but in the meantime, tell me who you descend from and how we're related. I'm always glad to meet another cousin! Sally Goodfellow
