I've seen that variation. I've been looking for different variations that was how I found them in 1860 in Grant Co, WI -- spelled SHIMMERMON. So far no luck finding before 1852. If they are listed, it is probably spelled so bad that I just have not been able to locate them. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DanFranklin48 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.delaware/1191/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for the parents of John J SCHERMERHORN / SCHAMERHORN. The family is from New York, and he died about 1859 in Grant Co, Wisconsin. There are indications that John J SCHERMERHORN / SCHAMERHORN came from the area of Schoharie and Delaware counties in New York. His widow Caroline b. 1804, NY is listed in the 1860 census of Grant Co, WI with her sons Benjamin b.1832, NY; Hiram b. 1838, OH, and John b.1842. Jeremiah b.1835, NY is also apparently another son. He is married and listed with his wife in the 1860 census of Grant Co, WI. The names of the children are what leads me towards Schoharie and Delaware Counties. 1. Benjamin is not a common name in the SCHERMERHORN family. John R. SCHEMERHORN b.1752 moved from Albany Co, NY to Schoharie Co, NY. He and his wife Catharine KNICKERBOCKER had a son named Benjamin b.1782. They also had a son named John J.; but this is apparently not the John J. that I am looking for. 2. Hiram is more common in the SCHERMERHORN family, but still not common. The name Hiram also appears in the family in Schoharie County. 3. Similar is the name Jeremiah - Although I do not see one in Schoharie, the name does appear in both Greene County and Otsego County. 4. On of the most interesting connections is the name Adelbert. Adelbert is very unusual. Jeremiah b.1835 and his wife Margaret TINDALL named one of their sons Adelbert. Sarah Etta SCHERMERHORN b.1827, NY married Philo CROSS and they named a son Adelbert. They are listed in the 1850 census of Delaware Co, NY and moved to Iowa and then to Kansas. Sarah Etta was the daughter of Peter SCHERMERHORN of Schoharie Co, NY. Her mother was Abigail b.1793 (daughter of Jacob T. SCHERMERHORN and Sarah SHUTTS). That's all I can find to this point connecting John J SCHEMERHORN back to this area of New York. More on John J. SCHEMERHORN - These are the only records I have found on him: 1852 State Census Clayton Co, IL: John SCHAMERHORN Male (5) Female (1) 1855 State Census Grant Co, WI: John SKEMMAHORN 1858 Land Grant, Grant Co, WI: John J SCAMMERHORN I have not been able to find him in the 1840 or 1850 censuses, and do not know the year of his birth. From the places of birth of the children, it is evident that the family moved shortly after 1835 from New York, and made stops in Ohio and Iowa before settling in Wisconsin. They may have also been in Michigan and Illinois. The birth place of his son John b.1842 is listed in the 1860 as Michigan, the 1870 census as Illinois and the 1880 census as Ohio. Appreciate any assistance. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The ones I've researched for distant cousins in MN descend from the original New York to Iowa Schermerhorns. Sally
I have Schermerhorn ancestors, some of whom migrated from NY to the midwest in the mid 1800s. Mine are in Iowa and Minnesota but I think the ones farther back may be ancestors of the Wisconsin folk. I'll help if I can!! Sally Chirlin

I am trying to fill in the various names I have in my family tree. Alison Hume was was the daughter of Robert Hume and Alison Wilson. She was born in 1778 in E. Gordon, Berwickshire, Scotland. She came to this country in 1795 as a part of the migration of three generations of my Hume ancestors. She married a Thompson and then a Leete (Liete or Leite are possible alternative spellings.) I cannot find a match on the website. Any help would be appreciated. Jack Hume

I am looking for further information about the family of Chauncey Davison, born 1810 in CT. Moved sometime before 1840 to Meredith. The 1850 census shows him with wife Louisa, and children Mary, age 19, William, age 10, Harriet, age 7, and Louisa, age 1. Apparently Chauncey moved to Starrucca,Wayne Co., PA, as he died there 19 Dec 1856. In 1860, Louisa is living in Broome Co with George and Lucretia Whitney. (Harriet married George's brother.) I have not found any further record of William. I also have a Lucretia Davison I cannot place. She was born CT in 1796. Possibly a brother of Chauncey? In 1850 she is living in Franklin. Anyone know of this family? Virginia

I'm looking for Derby's in Delhi. In particular Theodore N. Derby b. abt 1835 d. between 1870-1880 when his wife is found in Lackawanna PA married to a John Johnson. Theodore was married to Eliza Shove b. abt 1837. Theodore and Eliza had 3 children, Lucy, Samuel and Carrie. I find a newspaper article that says a T. N. Derby has opened a saloon in the basement of the drug store. I find him in the 1870 Delhi census with family and it states that he is a retired hotel owner. After that I lose him. We then find his daughter Lucy in the Johnson household in Lackawanna PA, with mother and step father. I cannot find burial information regarding Theodore, is anyone else researching this family? Thanks, Rene'
Apologies for error. I transposed numbers. Prior posting should have read: Don't know if there's anyone out there with a?connection?but periodically I post in the desperate hope that someone will have that one key to help me open up a brick?wall...... I have an Alexander CAMPBELL, b. about 1780, in or near Glenorchy. He married Ann or Anna STEWART about 1796. Sometime after that they emigrated to the US. They settled in Stamford, Delaware County, NY, by 1820, where they were listed on the census. It's likely they were in one or another town in Delaware County through 1829 and possibly later. ???? Children I'm certain of are William, b. abt. 1814, Henrietta, b. 1819, and Catharine, b. 1829. By 1842, Henrietta [and possibly the others] were in Chemung Co., NY.?There were very likely other children - I'm?just not sure who [or is it whom]. Additional note: Alexander CAMPBELL was listed very near Colin CAMPBELL on the 1820 census. Colin was?b. Glenorcy, 1783. It's likely that, if not brothers, they were related in some manner. If there's anyone out there with information, a connection, or even bright ideas, I'd appreciate your help jump-starting this stimied line of mine. I do NOT have any of these families,. BUT, since K.POWELL mentioned the town of Catherine in Schuyler Co., that jogged my memory a bit, as follows. Catherines-was formed from "Newtown" [now Elmira in Chemung Co.This happened in March 1798, so after that ,persons on census in that area would be in Catherines, which is a TOWNSHIP of Catherine and there is a small village named Catherine, also. This means [if you are not familiar with the Township set- up of government in the US Colonial States ] that you might find records in 1--the County Courthouse in Watkins Glen 2--the Township Offices for Catherine 3--the Village Offices where they resided ,if the hamlet was large enough to even have an office and IF they resided there, actually. TRY THIS: The Historical Soc. Bldg. and RECORDS for Schuyler County are housed there and that is in Montour Falls,NY.. The county Historian is Barbara BELL. You might write there, give as much info. as you have [names, dates, places in particular, make a 'starter' donation to cover postage and time, etc. ] and see what that brings forth. To K.POWELL--I do not have Ancestry .com but am guessing from your answer that you might. I am using a NYS Finger Lakes MAP, and French's Gazatteer of NYS [1860], and a ruler [smile]. Since you found Alexander at Horseheads, and that is about 12 miles southwest from the Schuyler Co. southern border with several hamlets in between there and Catherine TWP.{ and is in the TWP. of Veteran [Chemung] } was there any other lead on the 1855 Census that might be helpful to this researcher? Charlotte J. Sheldon On Feb 2, 2008, at 11:19 AM, K Powell wrote: I can tell you I'm not much help. That said, I have your Alexander & dau Catherine. I think your Alexander was enumerated at Horseheads, Chemung, on 1855 NY State census in William's household, although 1860 Catherine which has been lopped off and is now Schuyler Co, has a similar household with a William and "axcie" who say they're from CT. Through a series of marriages a descendant of Catherine Campbell married a Shappee and a Shappee had married Shoemaker Hill's widow there in Chemung Co. I have other Campbells in Chemung County, one of whom married one of "my" McKinneys. I have Stewarts down in Delaware County, one of whom married one of "my" Cooks.
