Jane: When I was in Cortland Co. a few years ago, I went to the following places: Cortland County Historical Society 25 Homer Avenue, Cortland Phone (607) 756-6071 Check their website for hours - they used to be open Tues-Sat from 1:00-5:00 You have to pay a daily fee or you can join the society if you are going to be there for a few days. Cortland Free Library 32 Church Street, Cortland I would also suggest that you find out the name of the historian for the town in Cortland Co. that you interested in and contact them. Each town has a town historian and some of them are very helpful. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/towns.htm and you will see a list of historians. Good luck on your trip.
