Hello, This list has been quiet. Is there anyone out there? I am looking for information on the PURVIS line. Thomas D. Purvis came to Cortland Co. in the early 1800's from Sullivan County, New York. He passed away in the 1840's in Cortland Co. Does any one have any info on him and his family? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you, Melba Preece in Arizona

Ok, Charles asked that I keep it coming...... New this AM - Progressive Hamilton - published in 1896. History of Hamilton, Colgate, various churches and many businesses mentioned. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nymadiso/proghamt.htm Thanks to Rich Holmes for transcribing nearly 100 pages to put this book online. If someone has access to this book - I'd love to be able to add the pictures from the book. I was unable to do so, for they didn't scan very well, so that 90% plus are too bad to post. Otherwise - enjoy! Tim

Just a quick update for you all on my present situation. As you may/may not know I'm the state coordinator for GAGenWeb project http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/ and I've been tied up the last 3 months with folks who would rather fight than build web pages such as the Chenango and Madison sites. When this continuing nightmare will end I'm unsure. For the moment though - this is the second night I've been up all through the night trying to wade through tons of email and sleep and get to my true love of putting data online for you good folks. Each day I keep hoping - but nearly daily attacks really drags one down. For all the folks who've offered to transcribe for me - I've not forgotten you - I'm just trying to find the time to get stuff to you. Tim (645 AM)

I'm looking for information on Benjamin THOMPSON and his family of Preble. He was supposedly born in Cortland County ~1837, and I found him in the 1850 census at the age of 13 with his mother Hannah, 55, and his brother Henry, 21 at the very end of the Preble listings. They may be the family of Archibald Thompson who was listed in the 1830 and 1840 censuses, but that is just a guess. I have a pretty good line on him from 1862 (Huron County, Ohio) to 1880 (St. Louis, Missouri), but need info on his parents and siblings. I'd also love to know where they went once they left Cortland County in the 1850s. I haven't been able to find them in the 1860 census, but he was in Huron County, Ohio marrying a girl from Litchfield, Michigan in 1862. I've tried probate and deed indexes and can't find a thing on Archibald. Does anyone have recommendations for where to look for church records from that area for the 1830-1860s? I sent a letter off to the Preble Congregational Church yesterday to see if they have any going back that far. And does anyone know of any connection between these Thompsons and the BURLINGAME family from Cortland? Benjamin signed his youngest daughter over to adoption by a W.L. Burlingame, a storekeeper in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri, in 1875, and I saw there was a Charles and Westcott Burlingame in Willett in the 1830s or 40s and wondered if the families might have been in the same migration west or intermarried. Or the guy in Missouri could be from a different family altoghter and it's just a coincidence.:) Thanks for any help! Vicki Bates Gardnerville, Nevada

Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone knows anything about a Lawrence BARKER who appears in the 1820 - 1840 Truxton, Cortland Co Fed Census? He appears to disappear in the 1850 Truxton census. I am interested in knowing the names of his family or any other info about them. It is possible one of his daughters was the first wife of my gr gr grandfather Charles H PATTERSON. Thanks for any response. Carol

Patti, I can't answer your question below, however, are you familiar with Albert, Francis, Garret and John S Vanhoesen in Preble? There is a small bit of information about them in the Pioneer History of Cortland Co. Let me know if you are interested. Concerning the book: "Two English Families In America: Baldwins---Roods" Written by Edwin Baldwin, dated April 1933. I've been contacted by another person who owns one of the original copies of this book and is seeking to locate whereabouts of the 300 original copies. Wondering if anyone else on this list has an original of this book and would like that information to be known. Also just an FYI. Have noticed there is a copy of this book available for sale at Madigansbooks.com listed under Baldwins family. (Baldwins) Two English Families in America Baldwins --- Roods, E.F. Baldwin, Press of Braunworth & Co, Brooklyn NY, 1933, 43 pp, vg, photos, desc of Ornan Baldwin of CT, NY b 1808 d 1878, $ 40.00 While this explanation only mentions descendants of Ornan Baldwin, the book's title page says: Ancestors and Descendants Of Ornan Baldwin and Mary Anne (Polly) Robinson. And Of Ezra Rood 2nd And Demaris Potter (grandparent's of the complier) Please note the book's publishing date is 1933 so no information after that date is in this book. And it has scare information for the generations before the persons in the title. Several people who have met online thru various lists and messageboards have communicated to update some information and correct several mistakes in the original book's section for their branch of the Rood family. Line I'm researching is Sarah Ann Rood Barnes Daughter of Ezra Rood 2nd and Demaris Potter Rood Locations in New York - Plainfield, Winfield and Cortland. Dale Barnes [email protected]
Hello, I am descended from a Robert and Electa Van Hoesen who in the 1850 Preble, Cortland Co. census are age 26 and 27. A Van Hoesen researcher who is probably on this list has Electa's maiden name as Barras. I've found little evidences of Barrases in the vicinity and only recently noticed that in that 1850 census living with Robert and Electa is a Hannah Crofoot age 51. as well as two apparent children of Hannah. Hannah's birthplace is given as Connecticut as is Electa's. If I didn't have any other information I would surmise that Hannah was Electa's mother. Hmmmm, just thought of something. I suppose Hannah could have been married to a man named Barras when Electa was born and then remarried to become Crofoot. Anyway, I wondered if anyone has researched the Crofoot family and can shed any light on my particular situation. Pattti Robert Van Hoesen>Albertus Van Hoesen>Robert L. Van Hoesen>Hugh Edgar Van Hoesen (my grandfather)>
