    3. Charles Sullivan born NY died Aug. 1973 perhaps Homer, NY He was born Oct 13, 1902. I would like to know if this could be the Charles Sullivan who was born and lived in Syracuse at least until the 1930 census. This Charles was the step-son of Fred Mader of Syracuse (in 1930). He was the son of Patrick and Mary (Signor) Sullivan and the grandson of George and Nancy (Singleton) Signor of Homer and Syracuse. Any information about Charles and family would be greatly appreciated. Mary

Carson, Margaret, daughter of Samuel and Mary Carson, died August 11, 1834, age 23 years 11 months 2 days (with fragment of foot stone also). Whiting, Lurany, daughter of Caleb and Phebe Whiting, died June 29, 1828, age 5 years 8 months. Mr. Tillotson and his family mentioned that there were other stones near the house, but that they may not have been stones from the cemetery as this was supposedly the location where lived Caleb Whiting, a prolific tombstone carver of this area. The famed Asa Joiner also lived here or nearby and was apparently Whitings apprentice. Stones by Whiting, Joiner and others that worked in their shop are found by the hundreds all throughout the surrounding counties. Whiting eventually went to Ithaca and did some carving, Joiner moved to Ashtabula County Ohio where he continued working as a sculptor. In this cemetery I think the stones of Lurany Whiting and Catherine Campbell, and the base of the unnamed stone, are carved by Caleb Whiting, and that of Margaret Carson is undoubtedly carved by Asa Joiner. My research on these important Tombstone Carvers of Cortland County is woefully behind in updating and completion, but here is a brief web page of some of what I have done: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/Tombstones/CortlandCoCarvers.html Dan W. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/

    1. [NYCORTLA] Luther & Ann Brown Family - 1820s -1842(?) in Virgil - Information Requested
    2. Walter P. Coston
    3. Hi, I'm looking for information about the Luther & Ann Brown family who lived in Virgil, Cortland County and then in Tioga County. In particular, I'm looking for a connection with this family and my gg-grandmother, Adelia. Here's the information I've gleaned from various places, including census reports: Adelia A. Brown was born June 30, 1833 in Cortland County (Virgil?), New York and then married Elisha Pierce DeMaranville July 2, 1849 in Richford, Tioga County, New York. She died August 29, 1861 and is buried in Hunter Cemetery, Wheatland Township, Bureau County, Illinois. I'm seeking to determine the parents of Adelia, my gg-grandmother. Because of strong circumstantial evidence, I believe Adelia's parents are Luther and Ann Brown. For that, I need your help to prove or disprove this belief. Here's the information I have about Luther and Ann Brown: 1830 US census of Virgil, Cortland County, New York shows Luther Brown with wife and two females under 5 years old and one female 5-9 years old. 1835 NY State census, same place, shows (for Luther Brown) two males, wife and 4 females under 16 years old. 1840 US census, same place, shows Luther, wife, one male (son?) 10-14 years old, one female (Adelia?) 5-9 years old, two females 10-14 years old and one female 15-19 years old. 1850 US census in Spencer, Tioga County, New York shows Luther and Anna (sic) Brown with 7-year-old son Joseph. The first male (son?) and four females (daughters?) are no longer living with them. 1855 NY State census in Richford, Tioga County, New York shows Luther (53 years old and born in Chemung County, New York) and Ann (52 years old and born in Cortland County, New York) with their son, Joseph (12 years old and born in Tioga County, New York). Luther and Ann say they have lived in Tioga County for 13 years. Adelia, living with Elisha, says she was born in Cortland County and has lived in Tioga County for 12 years. A search of this county census for any "Brown" person of age to have brought Adelia to Tioga County 10-14 years earlier finds only Luther and Ann Brown. In 1855, Luther and Ann live about 2.8 miles away from Adelia and Elisha.very close! (Chemung County was formed from the western half of Tioga County by the state of New York on March 29, 1836.) 1880 US census in Fairmount, Leavenworth County, Kansas shows Luther Brown (78 years old) with his wife Ann Brown (76 years old), son Joseph (36 years old) and grandson, Henry (14 years old and born in Illinois). Joseph's wife is dead. Luther and Ann Brown, with son and grandson, live next to a DeMaranville family. I have found no Leavenworth County property (land), probate or court records for these Brown people or evidence of the death of Luther or Ann Brown in Kansas. I think the youngest of the four Brown daughters is Adelia A. Brown but can't prove it. That's why I need your help. If I could find a document saying that Joseph and Adelia were siblings or a document listing Elisha and Joseph as brothers-in-law, I'd have proof. With my best regards, Walter Patrick Coston 2 Overlook Drive Holmdel, New Jersey 07733-1316-02 (732) 739-0445

Date: Sat, 02 Aug 2003 00:41:48 -0400 SPECIAL EDITION: Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter I have written a number of times about a genealogy-related scam that operates under a variety of names, including GenSeekers.com, GenealogyGiants.com and more. In the July 7 edition of the newsletter, I identified the owner/operator of this "business" as 21-year-old Elias Abodeely of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Since then, I have had conversations with several people in Iowa about this "business." I can now report that earlier today the Cedar Rapids police department arrested Elias Abodeely for his activities with GenSeekers.com and the other Web sites he operates. KWWL television in Iowa is now reporting that Cedar Rapids Police have made an arrest after a two year Internet crime investigation. The crimes involved genealogy websites. Today police arrested Elias Abodeely II of Cedar Rapids.. He faces four charges: 1st degree theft, identity theft, money laundering, and ongoing criminal conduct. Police say they expect to file charges against more suspects. Details are still developing. Keep an eye on the newsletter Discussion Board at http://www.eogn.com for updates. I will also be writing about this in the next newsletter. You can read my earlier article at http://www.eogn.com/archives/news0327.htm. - Dick Eastman

    3. Hello list, I am looking for the parents of William Lorenzo HASKINS born about 9 March 1827 in NY (per the 1880 Wisconsin federal census.) He was married to Lois L. who was born about 1830-31 in Cortland Co. . William Lorenzo and Lois were in Wisconsin by about 1860. Children were: Anson H.; Duwane L, and Ella M. all born in Wisconsin. In the 1820 and 1830 NY census for Truxton, Cortland there are several HASKINS listed: Julius Leander Silas William H. (H=Hutton) Benoni (all four men above are his sons) Lydia Does anyone have info on descendants of these men? Could one of them (Julius, Leander, Silas or William H.) be the father of William Lorenzo HASKINS? (could also be HASKIN or HOSKIN/S/) I am interested in *all* descendants of the above men as I am trying to prove a relationship between a John L. HASKIN/S/ and William Lorenzo HASKINS. 2. Greetings - Today my neighbor asked me about my involvement with genealogy. He told me had just in the last few months learned that he had a twin sister who died about the age of 3 and wondered if I knew how to find out about her. The twins were born in 1927 in Herkimer Co, NY but were living in Homer, Cortland Co in 1930 when Doris Mae Hall was supposed to have died. I checked the Cortland County GenWeb page but only one (Glenwood) of the 6 cemeteries in the Homer area has been transcribed. Does anyone have access to the listings for any of the other cemeteries? They are Atwater, Brook, Elmwood, Gillett and Scott Union Cemeteries. It would be wonderful if we could help this person out - I felt so sad when he said he remembered playing with a little girl!!! But had never realized it was his sister! Thanks in advance for any help you can give us. Nancy O. Anderson

    3. Mary I have seen "dropped" meaning they probably had not attended services in quite some time. To be Excommunicated probably would mean they had done something against the Baptist religion and would not repent, for instance a live-in-arrangement without actually being married. This I have seen. First they would send someone (usually 2-3 men) from the church to speak with the man.
