mmmThe 1855 census, Town of Brookfield, 2nd Election District, Madison County, NY indicates Philetus {spelled Philetois on the census] was born in Cortland County, NY. ca 1832. I believe he is a son of Paul Babcock Jr. , born 31 May 1791, died 16 June 1836 Scott, NY, 45 years of age,. Paul's wife was Barbara Burdick. Philetus would have been a brother to Jesse Babcock. Philetus Babcock's wife was Clarisa {Clarissa ?} Although it appears Philetus did reside in Scott. NY, he spent most of his life in Brookfield, where he also died. Any information would be appreciated. I have more on this line to share as well...

Hello Cortland list - My name is Laura Bent, and I am researching some families who I find in Cortland County beginning in 1830. I have some very strong circumstantial evidence that tells me that these are my ancestors, but I am searching for hard proof. Perhaps somebody out there can help me. Here are the names: SEELYE - My gg-grandfather Simeon Seelye was born in NY August 6, 1826. He lived most of his life on his farm in Rathbun, Elk Co. PA. He is very, very close to the county line however, and lists his address as Beechwood, Cameron Co. PA. I believe that WILLIAM SEELYE of Cortland NY is his father. I find William in Cortland's censuses from 1830 with his widow Ellen (2nd wife) and son Felix still there in 1880. He lived in Lapeer. HAINES - alternately spelled Hanes and Haynes. Simeon's wife was named Rebecca, and I have everything except written proof that she was the daughter of HENRY HAINES. Henry can be found in the 1830 Cortland census, enumerated immediately after William Seelye. Henry moved to Hector Twp, Potter Co, PA approximately 1844, and owned a farm on the banks of the Genessee Forks until the mid 1860's. He then moved to Beechwood, Cameron Co where he lived near all of his children. I believe he died in the 1870's. GLOVER - another source has told me that William Seelye's 1st wife was named JANE GLOVER. Another of Henry Haines' daughters, Henrietta, married CHARNIK GLOVER, and they lived next door to Simeon and Rebecca Seelye in Beechwood, Cameron Co. PA. I also have a CHARLES GLOVER who is a witness on Simeon Seelye's Civil War Pension papers, and is buried in the family plot in Beechwood. I have not been able to place either of these Glover men, but it is possible they are related to HENRY GLOVER who I find in Cortland County in 1820 and 1830. Henry Glover is the right age to be a possible brother of Jane Glover Seelye. LOUCKS - The Louck's family is very well documented, and they are intertwined with the other three families. The patriarch of the family in Cortland Co is Peter C. Loucks. His son Cornelius married Naomi Johnson, and they lived near Henry Haines in Potter County. Cornelius and Naomi's daughter Elizabeth married David J Haynes, who is possibly the oldest son of Henry Haines. David and Elizabeth lived in Beechwood in Cameron Co. David died at a young age and is buried in Potter County. Cornelius and Naomi's son William J Loucks married Henry Glover's daughter Janet, and they also lived in Potter Co. JOSEPH SEELY - a bio is posted for him in Bradford Co. PA. According to the bio, he lived in Cortland Co for approx nine years -- 1828-1838. I can only find him listed in the 1835 tax list in Cortland, however, there are two adult couples residing in the William Seelye household in 1830 and Joseph is in the right age range to be the younger adult male. Possibly William's brother? Joseph Seely's parents were Sylvanus and Mary Hoyt Seely, natives of CT, who lived in Walton, Delaware Co, NY at the time of Joseph's birth in 1802. Both died and are buried there. If you have information on any or all of these families, I want to hear from you!! Thank you, Laura Bent
Hello all: It has been quite some time since I made a blatant pitch to remind one and all of the wondrous resources for all of Central New York that are found on my web pages for Cazenovia, Fenner and Nelson (Madison Co., NY) History Pages. It is a RootsWeb page, but not being a county page I often get overlooked. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/ I've recently added a number of new web pages containing a portion of my vast collection of newspaper notes, and I am always adding new materials. My greatest effort of late is just keeping the pages up to date and correct, so be sure to keep coming back for a visit to see what else I've added in the way of new pages, or updates to older pages! The pages are fully indexed on www.google.com, and I have an up-to-date search function on my front page. The sheer bulk of material is the only drawback to doing a search for what you are after! From: "Robert Sullivan" <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2004 14:03:51 -0500 Subject: [NYGEN-L] Changing Faces To: [email protected] I'd like to announce that Jan Cortez and Tim Stowell will now be at the helm of Broome and Cortland Counties, respectively. We are grateful to Vicki Hall Titus for all of the work she put into maintaining the Broome, Cortland and Sullivan sites, and wish the best of luck to Jan and Tim. Bob Sullivan (NYGenWeb State Coordinator) =========== This evening I've loaded a new front page for Cortland County. As this site is rather large, it will take a while to get it under control and I ask your patience. My first task is to get the main items working again and fix the broken links of which there are over 130. Jan Cortez currently hosts Otsego County as well. Tim
Note that the NYSHA director neglected to say you need to include 8.25% sales tax or a tax exempt number. From: Melissa McAfee <[email protected]> Subject: Rural Registers To: [email protected] RURAL REGISTERS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE The Research Library of the New York State Historical Association has recently obtained the surviving inventory of Rural Registers published from 1937 to 1940 by Rural Surveys, Inc. of Ithaca, N.Y. Registers were published by that company for 29 counties in the state and were a directory of all of the farms in those counties. The paper covered registers give the names of the head of each family living in rural areas in the counties, if the person is married, the "Compass System" address of each one, and coordinates for finding the farm's location on an accompanying map. Copies of these registers are uncommon. The information in them would be of interest to local historians in identifying area residents, genealogists in finding ancestors, and agricultural historians interested in farming in New York State just before World War II. We would like to disseminate copies of the registers to make the information available to researchers in the local areas. We have copies of 26 counties' registers available as follows: Albany Broome (no map available) Chemung Chenango Cortland (no map available) Erie (no map available) Fulton and Montgomery (no map available) Genesee Herkimer (Southern) Jefferson Livingston Madison Monroe Niagara Oneida Onondaga Ontario Orleans (no map available) Oswego Otsego Rensselaer Schenectady and Southern Saratoga Schuyler (photocopy only) Seneca (photocopy only) Steuben Tompkins Copies will be made available as long as the supply lasts according to the following price schedule: A county's register and a map - $10.00 per copy A county's register for which no map is available - $8.00 per copy An order of five or more registers - $ 8.00 per copy Each register was issued in three slightly different versions with the same map accompanying each. The Rural Guide (sometimes called Rural Index) gives names of farmers, the "Compass System" address of each one, and coordinates for finding the person on the map. The Rural Register (sometimes called Farm Register) adds the postal address for each person listed. The Special Classified Rural Register adds the number of persons living in each home and other information on each farm. Orders will be filled with copies of the Special Classified Rural Register as long as the supply lasts, then we will fill orders with the Rural Register or Farm Register, and finally the Rural Guide or Rural Index. There are many good copies available, but there are also some with water stains or torn covers. Orders will be filled with the best copy available. Checks should be made out to New York State Historical Association. Orders may be sent to: Research Library, New York State Historical Association, P.O. Box 800, Cooperstown, NY 13326. If you have questions, please contact library staff at 607-547-1470 or send e-mail to the Research Library at [email protected] ______________________________________ Melissa McAfee Research Library Director New York State Historical Association The Farmers' Museum PO Box 800 Lake Road Cooperstown, NY 13326 607 547 1473 (tel) 607 547 1405 (fax)
Have you tried "Pioneer History of Cortland County, and the Border" by H.C. Goodwin (A.B. Burdick, New York, 1855)? It is available in most local libraries and a paperback reprint was published by Heritage Books in 1998. You can also view it online (free!) at the Cornell University's Making of America website (link is below). You may be able to find other related books and papers there. http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/moa/moa-cgi?notisid=ANX0492 Cornell has an additional website with more historical information. http://historical.library.cornell.edu/nys/browse.html Hope this helps, Roger Phillips [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Bess" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 07, 2004 5:45 AM Subject: [NYCORTLA] Lifein early cortland County > I am looking for material either written, oral or painting that would > describe or show life in Cortland County in 1800-1820. A couple of months ago I gave a couple of PC lessons on the Madison County list. While most liked the idea, some did not - so I'm creating another list - actually reviving a non-used list to post items that should be helpful for folks and their computers. If you are interested in joining such a list, please email me privately at [email protected] Tim
Hi Patty, I was wondering if you have any info on Abner Johnson and who his father was? I couldn't find his father anywhere. Melba
Does anyone have information on Abner Johnson (1829-1919) and his wife Julia E Dann (1835-1925) They are the parents of Julia Idell Johnson who married Thomas Allen Parker Jr
I am looking for information (dates, parents, siblings, etc.) of Conrad Hollenbeck and his wife Rebecca Edwards. They are the parents of John Hollenbeck who married Emily Parker in 1838
Greetings, I have an abstract of a death record from Homer, Cortland County in 1888. Now the question is where would the original be located? Albany? Does it still take 12 mos. or has the time shortened? Cost? Appreciate any response. Mary
Added this PM: Chenango County - The final round of data from the Oxford Annals - http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/annal.htm I encourage you to take a list of the surnames there included for some of these same names appear in Madison and Cortland counties as well and while they may not be your direct line, they may be cousin lines. Tim
Hello my name is Renné Blocker and I am new to this list. Three of the names I am researching have roots in Cortland County. My great grandfather, HORCE LATHROP, and his siblings lived mainly in small towns of Cortland County from 1850-1900. Horace's parents were: JAMES HARVEY LATHROP and THANKFUL MOON. THANKFUL MOON was born May 1820 in NY. I can find a Joseph and a Thomas MOON in the 1820 Cortland County census and both have young daughters so I have not ruled either of them out as Thankful's father. THANKFUL MOON married JAMES HARVEY LATHROP in 1838, in Cortlandville. The various censuses show THANKFUL in towns like Virgil and Cortlandville until btwn 1900-1910 when she moved to Kansas with her son JAMES HENRY LATHROP and she died in Topeka, Kansas at age 90. Horace Lathrop's daughter, EVA LATHROP, was born 1879 in Champion, Jefferson County, N.Y. I first find her as an adult in the 1900 Cortland County census. Her name is now EVA SCARFF although in the 1910 census it is misspelled as Scarf. Eva married William SCARFF in 1899 as on the 1910 census for Cortland County they have been married 11 yrs. they are in Cortland County 1900 and 1910 census and then they are in Onondaga County census for 1920 and in the 1930 census they are in Madison County, Chittenango. Somewhere btwn. 1930 and 1948 Eva SCARFF died as she is not listed as a survivor in her sister's obituary. I have not been able to find a single scrap of information on William SCARFF, his parents, siblings, ancestors etc. I would appreciate any information anybody can give me on the families: LATHROP, MOON and SCARF. Thank you in advance for any information you may provide me.
