Ok, well not the real end of the road, but almost. We're less than 10 miles from the North Dakota border, so nearly at the end of Minnesota. It was -8 when we got here last night about 630. Not that much ice on the roads and not much snow either. The car issue - well the folks at the dealership said not to worry about it, for had it been a major problem it would have croaked long ago. It was -12 last night, this evening the last I looked, when we came in from supper it was -14, a number I've not seen since I was in Chenango / Otsego counties, New York for Christmas of '68, when it was -18 at night, -14 when we got out and double bundled up, walked down the river road on the Otsego side of the Unadilla River to South New Berlin, and the local grocery store, about 3 miles away. (Hey, young and foolish). Gathering historical data while I'm here, as I host a site for Wilkin county, MN (where my wife is from), and from other places as well as material presents itself. Trusting you all have a happy and blessed holiday season. ------------------------------------------------------via webmail---- Tim Stowell [email protected]
Hello all: Since Tim is on the road I figured what better time to one-up him (just kidding) and announce that I have posted a new reading of the Erieville Cemetery in the Town of Nelson, Madison County. This reading is based on the work of Mike Marris in 2001, with comparison to the old 1915 list of interments. http://www.geocities.com/ofvoyager/ErievilleCemetery2001.htm There is now record of more than 1,500 people in this great cemetery and I am adding it to my massive data base of all known burials in Cazenovia, Fenner and Nelson (at least 15,000 names, in 60 cemeteries, most of which are posted on my web pages.) Go to my main page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/ Scroll down to the "What's New" link or to the Cemetery Transcripts link, and follow from there. Happy Holidays! Dan W.
Sitting here enjoying high-speed Internet at the motel in Bloomington, IL. 500 miles down about 700 to go. Got started about 4 hours later than we hoped but I was pooped when we got this far. Odd thing is that it started getting headlight time as early as 130 PM. I know it gets dark early here but really! 15 here, not too bad mainly because there doesn't seem to be much wind. Concerned about my car this PM, wondering if that rattling that's been around for a while is in fact my water pump :( Fortunately there is a dealer here, so worst case hopefully they can get me back on the road without too much hassle. I worked on web site work until about 4 this morning then had to call a halt before I finished the queries for Chenango, Cortland and Madison - which will have to wait until I return. It was nice this year though to start/finish Christmas shopping in 20 minutes. A new record for me. This was done because 2 big ticket items were already mostly taken care of. But I did have to "add" some trimmings. Anyways, I'll report in, when I have something else to impart. I did bring some material with me to work on - 10 days in MN indoors would be long without it. ------------------------------------------------------via webmail---- Tim Stowell [email protected]
Chenango County - Fairview Cemetery - Town of New Berlin - New Berlin (This time for real!) Since this one is rather large, I'm doing it section by section. Presented first are 5 of 23 sections. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/fairview.htm ======================= Cortland County - 1850 Census - Alpha listing (K added) Rather than go in alpha order, I'm mixing it up a bit. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/census.htm ======================== Madison County - History of New Woodstock - updated, first 68 pages now online. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/madison1/nwdstock.htm Family names added: Underwood Lyon Moffett Bell --------- Also - the first 4 of 14 pages of the BROWN family index: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nymadiso/gedcom.htm which includes all the Brown listings and associated families up to the point I've stopped for the present time. ---------- A family tree for the PAGE family. Hmm, just realized that's the name of one of our more colorful members! (meaning illustrious) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nymadiso/pageged.htm ====================== With this note I bid you adieu until after the holiday. I'm heading to where the cold comes from....the great plains, where the high Wednesday is to be -1, Thursday -3. My best wishes for you and yours during the holidays. Tim
Hello all - I was hoping someone can help me. I am looking for a marriage date for Joseph Stewart & Jane Rose probably between 1847 and early 1850 in Cortland Co. NY, and possibly in the town of Truxton. Any help would be much appreciated. Dot
There's nothing like humble pie. A slice or two of it every so often keeps one in perspective. Previously I reported the addition to Chenango County of: Fairview Cemetery - Town of New Berlin - New Berlin Riverside Cemetery - Town of New Berlin - South New Berlin http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/cemetery.htm =================================================== To my surprise / dismay? I found out that what was reported as Fairview Cemetery was in fact Greenwood Cemetery, located in the northern end of the Village of New Berlin. Fairview is more centrally located and is situated beside St. Andrews Cemetery. There is a listing of Fairview (really) in the works. While there is a listing of Greenwood on-line already, I believe that it was from a DAR listing a number of years ago. This new list is from village records. ==================================================== Additionally, this morning I've uploaded several more pages of the Sherburne Centennial booklet - bringing the on-line total to 61 pages of the 111 page total. This new section entitled Historical address is chock full of names giving many family names origins to this and other areas. It along with the beginning of the book provide a lot more depth than any other work previously added to the site for the Sherburne area. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/shr100t.htm From what I've seen of the remainder of the booklet, it too is chock full of history and names. While I doubt I'll get the remainder on this year, I do hope to get another section or two done. ===================================================== As for Cortland and Madison counties I plan to continue in 2005 providing more records, book accounts of the history and peoples of those regions. I have at hand many contributions from many a fine visitor, which I am working through. Additionally in 2005 I will be working to develop a site for a couple of more central New York counties based on requests to do so by visitors to these three sites. While I have much on my plate, I do enjoy the variety so much as I offer comment, lend a hand to others as they seek their family history. Thank you all for that privilege. Chenango County - Fairview Cemetery - Town of New Berlin - New Berlin Riverside Cemetery - Town of New Berlin - South New Berlin http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/cemetery.htm ======================= Cortland County - 1850 Census - Alpha listing (A and B only at present) A listing quite unlike any I've seen elsewhere http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/census.htm ======================== Madison County - History of New Woodstock - updated, first 60 pages now online. This section starts with notes regarding those who served their country from the Revolution through the Civil War, followed by a couple of notes regarding fraternal organizations and then the beginning of the the family histories. These consist mostly of where folks came from, some show several generations and current location of folks when the book was written in 1901. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/madison1/nwdstock.htm Family names online thus far: Ainsworth Corbin Freeborn Frizelle Tucker Webber Tim Stowell [email protected] Chattanooga, TN
I've "rescued" an old photograph of E. Day CLARK of Cortland, New York which was taken in January 1892 at the Hyatt & Tooke Studio in Cortland. I believe that he was a student at the Cortland Normal School at that time. It appears that the photograph was a gift to Lillian P. WHEELER as her name appears on the back of the photograph. I believe that this is the same person you've included in your Rootsweb Family Tree. I'm hoping to see the photograph returned to the family. Please contact me regarding the photograph when you have a chance. Thanks, Shelley Cardiel
I just added 3 new pages to the New York town history section of my web site. These are for the following towns: Cincinnatus, Courtlandville and Freetown. This makes a total of 94 towns in New York state that I have town histories on at the site. http://www.rays-place.com Cheers Ray Brown
I have just joined your list. I am looking for the family of Catherine Hickey. She was a school teacher in a public school. I do not know if she married. She has a twin Elizabeth Hickey. If any one knows of this family please e-mail me. Barbara Hickey
I finally got the site to index correctly with PicoSearch. It had gotten stuck on a file that was so large the indexer choked. I spent a good part of yesterday splitting that file into two smaller files and also cutting out duplicated material in the original file. As of last night the site shows it has 608 pages. At present I'm still finding broken links to fix, while updating pages as I go. As new material is added, I'll try to either indicate it with a 'new' label or an 'updated' label beside the sections modified. I trust each of you had a wonderful time of thanksgiving with friends or family. Tim Stowell [email protected] Chattanooga, TN
WINCHELL, WILKINS, MAHER, CORCORAN I am researching the Corcoran Family, Winchell Family & Maher Family (and Wilkins Family) that lived in Cortland in the late 1800's to mid 1900's or later. I'm not sure if anyone is still around or not. Ann McKenna Corcoran (widow of Patrick, moved from Orville, NY (near Dewitt now ... close to Syracuse) and ran a Boarding House at 58 E. Court Street in Cortland. Children were: John H., James, Willie (or William, who moved to Seattle, WA & is buried out there), Mary E. Corcoran Maher (Mrs. William F. Maher, Jane (Jennie), and Hugh. The Maher's had a daughter Eileen, who married Carl A. Winchell. The Winchell's had a daughter Marie Antoinette Winchell Wilkins. Things I'm interested in learning... 1. Is there an online Cemetery list for Cortland Rural Cemetery? The Winchell's appear to be buried there. 2. Is there an online Cemetery list for St. Mary's Cemetery in Cortland? I think the Maher's are probably buried there. 3. I am interested in dates of deaths, so I can then try to see if I can obtain obits for them, and any other information on their life. Thanks for leading me in the correct direction to find things on this family. Anne Ruggeri [email protected]
Hello all - I really need some kind person to look up a marriage for me - Joseph Stewart and Jane Rose - it would have been at least the second for both. They were probably married between the end of 1848 and the first of 1850, and most probably in Truxton, Cortland Co. NY Any help would be most appreciated. Dot
To maintain a web site one must from time to time stop and fix broken links. Having dug deeper into Mike's old web site I'm mending broken links there in Madison County, which much like finding ancestors seems to create even more broken links when new pages are added. At present I'm stopping to resolve the broken links on these three counties. Some links are easier to fix than others but they all take time. At present these are the number of broken links per site: Chenango - 16 of 638 URSs - 2.51% as of 10/23 Cortland - 51 of 1027 URLs - 4.97% as of 11/4 Madison - 336 of 2659 URSs - 12.64% as of 11/4 As you can see my efforts are concentrated on Madison County as I seek to get these down to a much better rate. Meanwhile I do have material out, and have received some back from transcribers, just awaiting me to get the material online. This material will be worked in as soon as I can. Too many pies at the moment though. Tim
If someone is near the Greenwood cemetery in Homer, Cortland county and take a picture of the following: County = Cortland City = Homer Cemetery = Greenwood Notes = Lot 4, Sect 3 - Gardner, Henry Died July 31, 1870 Age 82 yrs. and next to it _____wife of Henry I am desperately trying to find out any information on these people. Wendy
I am seeking information, ESPECIALLY ABOUT HIS FATHER, regarding Uriah H Clark, born 17 May 1829 in Dryden, Tompkins Co., NY, Died 20 Nov 1889 in Harford, Cortland Co., NY, buried Green Hills Cemetery, Dryden, Tompkins Co., NY. The record book for deaths in Harford, his mother is listed as Joanna Clark and her birthplace is listed as Harford, Cortland Co., NY. It does not list the father's name, only that he was born in Lisle, Broom Co., NY. Uriah married Anna M Bishop (1836 - 1871), daughter of Joel and Maria Head Bishop. They are all buried in Green Hills Cemetery also. Uriah and Anna had 3 Children, Andrew, Georgianna and Mary Jane. Uriah also married Jane Miller, daughter of Charles C and Ursula K Miller. They had a son named Lee who married Bertha Walker. They are buried in Virgil Cemetery. Lee and Bertha had a daughter named Ruth Clark who married Charles Hamilton. Does any of this information ring a bell to anyone..............I am desperately searching for information regarding Uriah's father, and perhaps Joanne's parents...........I'm also looking for information on his wife Anna's parents (Joel and Maria Head Bishop). Can anyone help??
Would someone please look up an Obituary on Zeno CLARK born: 05-12-1838 MA died 10-05-1914 I thought it was Cortland, NY but have been unable to find him. Thank you, Star
I am sending this out in case someone is also looking for information or can give me more clues than I already have. I just found out that Henry George Gardner born about 1832 and christened in 1834 in St. Leonard's Shoreditch came to the USA after his parents, Henry b 1788 & Elizabeth (Bradley) Gardner b; abt 1804 and younger brother, Charles William Gardner who was born in 1834. (They came over in May of 1851) Henry George shows up on the 1855 census Homer New York living with his parents and brother, I found out because of a kind soul and I have ordered that film to get some more clues. Elizabeth is listed as owning land. I can't find Henry George Gardner on 1860 census anywhere. I don't know if he went back to London, got married or stayed in the USA. I can't seem to find him on the passenger list. Though I just found his parents and it was listed as Eliza and I clicked on it and their was her husband and son. I am asking some help to try and find him. I am still trying to find the family in 1841 to get me more clues. I haven't found a marriage record for Henry & Elizabeth and don't know much about her. Any other suggestions or does Henry George Gardner fit in your family. Gardner has been transcribed as Gardiner. Thanks Wendy Washington State.
I am sorry for the repeat but I if any knows the email addresses for the historians, I could use those also. Thanks again Marilyn Could any one on the list give me the days and the hours and the phone numbers for the historians in the towns of Freetown Corners and Homer, in Cortland county NY? I have family records that say the some family members were buried in these places. I am wondering if the cemetery care takers etc. would have access to the owners of the older burial lots. these burial would of been to the latest in the 186o and 1870. Some would have been around 1820 and following. Thank you Marilyn Bess --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
