There is a guestbook for Dan on the Richmond paper's web site: http://tinyurl.com/78amp It is my understanding that there is also one on the Syracuse newspaper's web site as well. It's been a rough day. I only wish it was a bad dream instead. Tim Stowell [email protected] Chattanooga, TN

The jist of this posted previously today on the Madison County list: From the Richmond Times-Dispatch: Daniel Herman Weiskotten Daniel Herman Weiskotten of Richmond, 45, died unexpectedly on May 6, 2005. Dan was the acting director of the Chesterfield Historical Society. He was the son of Herman Gates Weiskotten Jr. and Kathryn Morrow Weiskotten. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Ley Weiskotten. Dan was born in Syracuse, N.Y., and lived and worked in Upstate New York for most of his life. Dan received his bachelor's degree in anthropology and his master's degree in archaeology and public history from State University of New York at Albany, and worked as an archaeologist in New York State prior to moving to Richmond, Va. Dan also worked in Cazenovia at Lorenzo State Historic Site and served as the town's historian. Even after he moved to Virginia, he continued to share his knowledge of the history of Cazenovia and its past citizens through his website: rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/. He was a member of the New York State Archaeological Association, Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, a member of the Mount Independence Coalition and a corresponding member of the New York Archaeological Council. His job in Chesterfield County allowed him to pursue his lifelong interest in history, archaeology and education. Dan also volunteered his time and talents to the Virginia Association of Museums and the Citie of Henricus. Dan was happiest exploring old cemeteries and rural byways with his dogs, and in the dirt, whether teaching children about archaeology or gardening. He was a skilled woodworker and was always in the middle of several projects in his historic Northside Richmond home. In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by an aunt, four brothers, a sister and several nieces and nephews. A private committal service will be held in Cazenovia, New York, and a memorial reception will be held at Magnolia Grange later in the month. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Chesterfield Historical Society. Was there a school in Cortland in the 1860s for those who were studying to become lawyers? Or would they have gone to the nearby Homer Academy? One of my ancestors, John M. Couch, was part of the Cortland law firm of Shankland and Couch in the 1860s and it appears that he earned his law degree in Cortland or the Cortland area. I could not find a reference to any such school on the Cortland Co site, but may have missed noticing it. I'd like to know not only the names of any such schools but also possible sources that might provide information on the Cortland lawyers of this time period. Thank you Sue Moyer
I will be traveling through New York next week with my six children (ages 22-11) and am planning a slight detour to Preble/Cortland. I am descended from Garret Van Hoesen who married a Van Buskirk. I won't be there long (half a day) but would like to make the most of my time. I would like to visit the cemetery where the Van Hoesens are buried. I know I've seen that information somewhere, but can't lay my hands on it. Also, is there a historical or genealogical society in Cortland County? Is it open on certain days or times? We will most likely arrive late afternoon on Tuesday and will stay overnight visiting the cemetery/courthouse/library on Wednesday. Also can anyone tell me the quality of the two campgrounds that are near Cortland on Hwy 13? Thank you for any help. Patti -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Chenango County - 1880 History - Chapter 3 History of the Aborigines, Continued - http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/1880-3.htm French, English and Dutch Settlements and Claims, Iroquois, Champlain. --------------------------- 1880 History - Chapter 15 The War of the Rebellion - specifically the story of the 114th Regiment - the only complete regiment organized in Chenango county. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/1880-15.htm =============================== Some folks were upset with the 'history of the Mormons' in the chapter on Afton. As a Southerner, I find some of the language and 'facts' in Chapter 15 to be more hogwash than reality - but then those on the short end of the stick rarely write the histories of such. Tim
I've been asked "Does the Cortland County Historical Society still send a Bulletin to their members?" Can someone enlighten me on this? Thanks, Tim Stowell [email protected] Chattanooga, TN

I originally had more with the note below but removed it. What I removed was a statement regarding what was written in the history of Afton. It asked that you be tolerant to the transcriber and myself for we were only reporting what the author of 125 years ago stated as his opinion and/or fellow contributors to that work regarding the Mormons. Often when folks see things in print that they may find offensive to their heritage or religion they forget that we/me are reporters only for material as found. I rarely edit such texts, mostly letting even typos go through, unless the typo changes the meaning of the passage. There will always be people who are against other folks heritage, religion either out of ignorance or personal attitudes toward such. I can't help that. What I can do and try to do is be sensitive to others, while presenting the material as found, whether or not I agree with either the text or those offended by such. In other words I prefer to be neutral. ====================== Chenango County - 1880 History - Town of Afton - http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/1880-16.htm How Afton got it's name; a couple of pages of text at the end of Stowel(l) involvement with Joseph Smith and the Mormon movement and the 1880's author's thoughts about such. ======================= Regarding my health - arm chair doctors have mused that I have gall bladder trouble, kidney stones, heart issues - as long as I can hobble about I'll do so. :) Tim

I'll give the information first and then ask my questions: My Grt-grt-grandfather is Prosper Mark Burlingham, bn. 11 Aug 1838, Solon, Cortland, New York son of George A. Jr. Burlingham, bn, 9 Sep 1805, Madison County, New York Mary Winslow Saxby, bn. 24 Sep 1810, Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts George Burlingham is entered in Town Meeting Records for Solon, Cortland County, in 1815 as Overseer of Highways in District 12. I have traced Prosper Mark through the following censuses: 1850: age 14, at home in Solon. 1855, age 18, at home in Solon. 1860, age 22, in Freetown, Cortland County, md. within the year, Farm Laborer Wife: Ellen, age 21, bn. New York. -----//----- Prosper Mark enlisted in the Civil War in May, 1863 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. I have no clue why he was there! He shortly thereafter diserted, and re-enlisted 20 Feb 1864 in Anamosa, Jones County, Iowa. Prosper served briefly in the Civil War and was discharged 9 Jan 1865, Davenport, Iowa. He turns up again in 1870 in the Federal Census for IOWA. Linn County, Buffalo Twp., P.O. Anamosa: age 31, Farm Hand, with a different wife. His first wife, Ellen, is supposed to have died, and their two children (one of them my Grt-grandfather) are in Iowa, but are being raised by others (non-relatives). Here is my dilemma: 1) Need a marriage record for Prosper Mark and Ellen. 2) I need to establish when and where Ellen died - It had to be between Sep 1862 and Nov 1866. 2) I'm especially needing to learn Ellen's maiden name, parentage, and personal info. There's a tradition that her maiden name sounded like "Deo" or "Dico". Family rumor maintains (I don't believe it) that she died on the battlefield of Gettysburg. She was supposed to be a school teacher, followed Prosper to the area, and died in the battle with her young students. Yeah, sure. 3) Prosper is supposed to claim 9 years at sea, starting as a cabin boy. I'd sure appreciate any help on how one traces such an activity. And how could he have been living at home (census records) and still have pursued such a career? 4) The two children of Prosper & Ellen: Is it possible to confirm these events? 1) Ida May Burlingham, bn. 01 Oct 1860, Freetown, Cortland, New York 2) John James Burlingham, bn. 22 Sep 1862, Onandaga County, New York (My grt-grandfather) 5 Prosper's father and mother moved to Iowa between 1860 -1870. That's another thing I can't figure out - when George and Mary Burlingham departed Solon and moved to Iowa. I can't seem to locate them on the 1860 census - anywhere!! 6) Years ago I would often correspond with Mary L. Decker, long-time resident of Solon and environs. We've lost contact over these past 20 years and I have no idea where she might be nor how she's faring, but I'd sure love to hear from her. She was a very helpful friend to me as I was laying the groundwork for my Burlingham roots in Solon and environs. Her descriptive letters and helpful research helped me develop an abiding appreciation for Cortland County, New York. Anything someone may be able to contribute to eliminate my long list of quandries would surely be appreciated. Thanks! - Judy Anderson
Chenango County - 1880 History - Town of Oxford - http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/1880-21.htm A chapter that had 102 footnotes. A chapter so long I had to split it. The most poignant lines - "And then the long procession went with his ashes by homes each with its badge of sorrow, to the little City of the Dead, upon the hill-side. There, at the open grave, while tears gathered in regretful eyes and the blending voices of school and church bells, from the village, told of their common sorrow, it seemed passing strange that so many will leave their names only to be cut in pale, cold marble, when they might write them on the tablets of living, loving, human hearts." ====================================== Cortland County - Chapter 9 of Smith's 1885 history of Cortland County: From 1830 to the present time (1885). http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/smithhis.htm ---------------------------------------------- Town of Homer info listing started - http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/homer.htm Centennial of Congregational Church - 1901 ====================================== Madison County - 1899 History of Madison County - Chapter 26 - The Medical Societies and Profession. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nymadiso/1899-26.htm ====================================== Two more volunteers to transcribe have written.
