This message covers three separate bits of information that all connect. Firstly, I am looking for information as regards one Betsy MORGAN in the early 1800's who sold land with my Solomon PARKER (mentioned again later) to pay debts from her late husband's estate. Secondly, I know that there a many descendants of PARKERs in Cortland Co. that came from RI in the early 1800s. I would love to get together with all of you and sort these PARKERs out. In the meantime I am looking for someone with connections to the following family: Augustus L. SCOFIELD b. 1814 in CT d. 1887 in Marathon md 1839 in Marathon to Mary PARKER daughter of unk male PARKER and Polly ______ b. abt 1781 d. aft 1860. Polly was the second wife of my 5th grt grandfather Solomon PARKER b. 1769 Kent Co.,RI d. 1850 Marathon, Cortland Co., NY Polly's first husband was dead by 1830 I believe, because she is listed as head of house in 1830, living next door to my Solomon whose first wife, Rhoda Fry, died before 1840. Also, Augustus and Mary PARKER SCOFIELD were living next door to Kimball and Laurie WOOD in 1840. Laurie was one of Solomon's daughters by first marriage. Somehow I would think that these PARKERs were related and I would love Polly's maiden name. Thirdly, I have written about this before but am hoping someone will know something about some original records that were referred to as the Lisle Road Records. All of the queries lately regarding land records started me thinking again what a gold mine this would be if we could find an copy. I have the following quotation from a book pub in 1940, Ancestors of Flora Julia Brown; and some of their descendants written by Walter LeRoy Brown: “Note for No 1, Lucy Wood. The descendants of Lucy Wood Parker hve not been located. Cortland Co. Land Records: Jan. 2, 1836 James Parker and wife Lucy of the town of Virgil sell to Abiathar Brown * of the town of Nelson, Madison Co., N. Y., 40 acres, lot 8, 6C33L $560. Lisle road records of 1811 show an Abel Parker in the district with James Parker, Nathan Wood and John Brown. In 1809 Solomon Parker was overseer of road district No. 17. Thus Lucy Wood was living in Virgil in 1836 and was alive in 1858 (Pension Record, above.) James Parker’s father (or brother may have been Abel. Two of Nathan Wood’s daughters became blind before they died, Hannah and another (Almon J. Abbey). Malind Brown Barrows says the other one was Polly Balch.” Again, my Solomon PARKER, who is mentioned as being there as early as 1809. Abel and James were not brothers to Solomon but may have been cousins. I would love to find these records of which he was speaking. Any help with any of this would be much appreciated:) Charmaine Charmaine Riley Holley [email protected] "...but hobbits have a passion for family history." - Tolkien Lord of the Ring
The following town histories for New York were added to my web site today. Cayuga County Conquest, Montezuma and Sempronitus. Chautauqua County Jamestown, Ripley, Sherman and Villenava. Onondaga County Marcellus and Spafford. These are the first that I have for Chautauqua County, but the others have others online already. There are over 300 histories for New York at my web site. Please explore than all, I am sure that you will find something of interest there. If you go to: http://archivegrid.org/web/jsp/index.jsp and input Chenango County, NY in the search box, 148 entries regarding Chenango county are returned for items in university and other archives around the world. Input Cortland County, NY in the search box, 147 entries are returned. Input Madison County, NY in the search box, 555 entries regarding the Madison county are returned. One may also put in family surnames and get a wealth of detail. If your surname happens to be the same as some county name however, be prepared to wade through a lot of non-relavent detail. What I did in one case was to use the search term format of surname family which excluded the county records. Perhaps someone will find a clue to their own personal family history, if not at least it is interesting. I certainly have. Tim Stowell [email protected] Chattanooga, TN
I once spent the better part of two days going through Deed records at the Cortland County Clerks Office. This was back in 1999 and the procedures might have changed since then but when I went I was surprised at how helpful everyone was. Now these are land records and not vital statistics records (birth and death certificates) so the level of security is lower. I was glad to be able to go through all the record books on my own. My experiences in Onondaga County trying to get vital statistics records was at the exact opposite end of the spectrum. You would have thought I was trying to borrow gold from Fort Knox. And this was before 9/11. Anyway, back to Cortland County. They did allow photocopying but they were the only ones who were allowed to use the machines. That was simply to keep people from breaking their machines. The copies were a dollar a piece and they would only take CASH. That worked out great for me because I just kept finding things I wanted a copy of and I would bookmark it and toss it on the pile and go back for more. It made for a very efficient operation - almost as if I had brought along an assistant to do my copying for me. Being able to look for yourself you would always pick up other interesting names and trails to follow - which is why my original plan for a few hours turned into two days. But I was able to find out a lot of information about my ancestors that they hadn't told anyone. They had lived on several farms that no one had any idea about until I started going through the old deeds. I will give you a final example of how helpful they were but afterwards I found an easier way to accomplish the same thing. While I was there I noticed some large plastic coated maps hanging on the wall. These were the Town maps of all the Towns in Cortland County from the 1874-76 period. They had all the farms marked with the name of the owners and the number of acres. I wasn't going to leave without a copy of the Truxton and Cuyler maps. I was able to persuade the young lady working the copier to help me make copies of the maps. We both had to hold them and copy them in three sections. Later I taped them together and went to Kinko's to get a full size maps made of the three sections. Over all it turned out pretty good. Now that is helpful. Later I discovered the a company named Historical Ink has all the maps for New England and most of New York for sale. There is one last thing that you can do to pull all this information together. The maps are from around 1875 which is right between the 1870 and 1880 census. Since most people don't move around that much in five years it is possible to use the maps with the census records to figure out where people were living. The older census records didn't have any street names but most of the people in Cortland County were farmers and the census taker would just go down the road and write down the names as he came to the farms. Therefore, there is information in the sequence of names and the 1875 maps are very helpful in matching up those sequences. In addition, the land descriptions in the older deeds are not the same as those found today. The old deeds make references to adjacent properties by the owner's name and sometimes by the previous owner's name if that person had lived there a long time. So, taken together the census records, towns maps and deed records can provide you with a window into the past so that you can find out who was living next to who. The neighbor information has proved very valuable because daughters have a habit of marrying the boys next door and females are notoriously hard to trace. By knowing the names of the neighbors you can sometimes limit your searches to just a few nearby surnames. It also helps if you know some of the terminology for deeds, mortgages, bonds etc. I would be interested in recommendations for books or online resources for the basic legal information that is important to genealogy researchers. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Dobard" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 22, 2006 2:53 PM Subject: [NYCORTLA] TAX LISTS > Listers: > I would like some advice in locating tax records/lists for Cortland > County. I would not forget to check with local public libraries and historical societies for material of this nature. Frequently these kind of agencies have kept files of newspaper clippings relative to buildings of interest in a community. There is likely a link to the Cortland Historical Society on the GenWeb page. As you suggest, a person can search the land records in county court houses. I suppose if the current owner of a house of interest were contacted he or she might possibly share the information in his/her abstract. I would think an abstract might be able to be purchased since the information comes from public records, but I'm thinking that likely would be quite expensive. And I'm not sure how far back a current abstract goes in detail. Guess it would not hurt to inquire, however. Many thanks for the replies to my question on tax lists, etc. On the Cortland County web site (USGENWEB) there is an article about the History of the Darby Homestead in Cortland. It lists the ownership of the house during the 1800's. This could be very helpful in searching for family members who pass property down through the generations. Does anyone know how and where to do this in Cortland County? The Courthouse would be the logical place but because of the years needed to be searched it may be somewhere else. Any comments? Thanks again, Mary
Perhaps someone has an idea regarding this request sent me: "The house is in Harford NY the adress is 369 State Rt 38 it was built in 1870 I was looking for any historical info that might be avaliable on it." Thanks, Tim

Wayne I wonder if the Holdridge you are researching are related to the Holdridge from Chenango County, New York. My limited experience is that you must correspond/speak with the city clerk since the city/town collected the taxes. I've looked at a listing, circa 1840, of Virgil. That's what I mean by "limited". Hope that helps. I am once again posting, hoping that someone will see this inquiry who hasn't seen it before and will have information for me. I am seeking information about the Parents and/or siblings of Wilson Parker born 24 Feb 1776 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. (It could have been in Nelson or Nelsonville). He died 12 March 1839 in Lapeer, Cortland County, New York. I was told that Wilson married Rhoda Thorpe on 15 November 1799 in Nelson, Cumberland County, New Jersey. Rhoda was born 28 February 1784 in New Jersey and died 21 Jan 1864 in Lapeer, Cortland Co., New York. She was the daughter of Isaac Thorpe born 1764 in New Jersey and died 22 January 1839 in Cortland County, New York. I do not know who her mother was. Rhoda and Wilson are buried in Lapeer, Cortland County, New York. They had 10 children
