Hi, I previously posted a research help request for Cortland Cemeteries. It was suggested to search the 1845 Census for Cortland County. Is there anyone out there that has access to this census? If so, I am looking for Michael and Sara/Sarah Hollenbeck/Holenbeck/Halenbeck. Since Michael's 5 children were born sometime between 1810 and 1825, I am not sure how many of them were living with them. Probably at least 2. Michael and Sara died in 1846. Also, would appreciate a list of all Hollenbecks(sp) in the same general area. Was there a 1825 and 1835 Census? Does anyone know of any illness that was going around in 1846? I was curious because both of them died within a month or so of each other. Thanks!!! Cathy Fleming
The 1825 Cortland County census and 1835 Cortland County census are also on film #843779. For 1825, the census is for the towns of Willett, Virgil, Scott, Freetown, Harrison, Preble and Truxton. For 1835, it's for Cincinnatus, Cortlandville, Freetown, Harford (missing some names/people), Homer, Marathon, Preble, Solon, Scott, Truxton and Virgil. I'm not certain about Willet. This list could also include Willet. The above information is from my notes made August 24, 2002 when I first looked at this film. I will be viewing this film again about two weeks from now. I don't know anything about illness information recorded in any of these censuses, particularly the 1845 census. It's possible that the census enumerator noted illness information or common death reasons in the summary information for each town. If so, such an additional piece of information was a reporting option, if known. It's true that prior to 1850, the censuses had only one line for each household, showing only one name, the name of the head of the household. -----Original Message----- From: Walter P. I would really like to be able to view it for Virgil. I suspect that 1845 census information for the other Cortland County towns has been lost. I have viewed the 1825 and 1835 census for Cortland County in the County Clerks office. I would like to view the 1845 census for several counties in New York but it only exists for a very few places. Family members would not be listed on the 1845 NYS census -- just head of household with people in various age categories. You would need to try 1855 instead to see a listing of the family members.. Added early Friday - marriage notices from the Cortland Democrat for the year 1845. This item contributed by Merton Sarvay last year, discovered today. These are listed under the Town of Cortlandville. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/crtdvlle.htm Tim

Hi, I am looking for the cemetery where Michael Hollenbeck/Holenbeck/Halenbeck (b. VT) and his wife Sara/Sarah (Chase) were buried. They both died in 1846. Catherine Fleming
Many thanks to all for replies to my questions on the 1835 census especially Walter Coston and Doug Crosby who took the time to write out the list of the 1835 questions. I'm sure it was a help to many listers. Now if we only had the month and day of the census............ Mary
This is for Anne: I don't really have a listing of who is buried in any of the cemeteries but I do wander around them looking for graves for people. I have printed your request and will search for you. Elaine
Dear all, I have some Quaker ancestors in NY state (also RI) and have hunted down some gravesbut only in NY state. To the best of my knowledge Quakers had unmarked graves because it was considered "ostentatious" as they considered themselves simple people. But at some point they decided it was okay to mark graves with a stone. For example, ancestor James Tripp was buried in 1835 in a Quaker cemetery in Clyde/Juniius, NY (Wayne County) without a marker of any kind but his son who died in 1848 was buried in the same cemetery with a simple stone. I am not aware of any use of crosses to mark graves of any Quaker ancestors. I am not an athority, just share what I have seen/found for what it is worth. Happy hunting, Carol Clarke
I am at the Cortland County Surrogate's Court a couple of times a month and the probate files are up to date and easily searched and copies. If anyone needs anything contact me. I also live four miles from Willet and will be happy to take pictures in the cemeteries. I have done it before for people. I don't know much about this thread as I am in GA right now but thought I would jump in in case I can help anyone when I get home. I will be going to Cortland S.Ct. before the end of the week to copy some wills and probate files. Elaine
To the listers and Elaine I started this and here is the reason: Tim had posted some updates to the Cortland County site and while browsing through some of it I came upon the deaths at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/cortland/vitals/d1870.htm Cortland Democrat 1870 and found in 23 Dec 1870: Died. JOHNSON - Lewis JOHNSON died at his brother's residence in Willett, Dec. 4, in the 67 year of his age. I have a Lewis Johnson, married Polly Smith from Chenango County. I lost them after the 1870 Cincinnatus census. And I could not find just what Johnson family this Lewis might be associated with. Lewis Johnson was born ca 1804. Per the 1855 Cincinnatus census he was born in Orange County New York. I am hoping to prove that the Johnson who lived in Willet were related to the Lewis Johnson I have in my family. Elaine, if you have access to the Willet Cemeteries information I would truly appreciate a lookup. I have searched the Cincinnatus cemeteries. Polly's grandfather is buried in the Lower Cincinnatus Cemetery behind the church. I never thought to search Willet Thank you Anne --- On Sun 03/19, [email protected] < [email protected] > wrote: From: [email protected] [mailto: [email protected]] To: [email protected] Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2006 21:07:59 +0000 Subject: [NYCORTLA] Re: NYCORTLA-D cemeteries, wills, etc. for Willet I am at the Cortland County Surrogate's Court a couple of times a month and the probate files are up to date and easily searched and copies. I think the best policy to pursue then is just go with what the original public records show (keeping true to them) plus an explanation that the name has been spelled both ways so that folks would know to look for both spellings in their research. ------------------------------------------------------via webmail---- Tim Stowell [email protected]
I checked with a postmark expert who isn't sure that the PO ever spelled it with 2 t's (she's checking to see if there are any pre-1910 examples). The 1863 map of Cortland County only has 1 t. Here are the various spellings on the Federal Census: 1820 - Willit, Willet 1830 - Willett (Ancestry has it indexed as Willet) 1840 - Willett (not indexed) 1850 - Willet 1860 - Willett (Ancestry has it indexed as Willet) 1870, 1880, - Willett 1890 Veteran's Schedule - Willet 1900 - Willett 1910, 1920, 1920 - Willet Not sure I'd recommend any mass changes yet. Or, how about including a note explaining the spelling change so, in the future, people won't be questioning the "correct" spelling? -----Original Message----- From: Tim Stowell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, March 19, 2006 12:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NYCORTLA] Willett At 02:41 PM 3/18/06 -0500, Loma Wilkins wrote: >The Town of Willett was originally named in honor of Col. That would be 1908, final year available to public without going to the county clerk.
