Mary, All my genealogy is in storage, therefore I am going on memory. I think Samuel, through George and Permelia, is one of my line but can not prove it, so I do not keep them in my computer data. I believe 1850s (around 1854) Cortland County land records will show George Johnson and Permelia Johnson are his parents, and Billings is a brother. I think Samuel sold his land to another brother, Joseph, to clear his debt. After this transaction Samuel and nancy seemed to disappear. He may also have a land transaction indicating Ira Bradley is an uncle. Does anyone on list have any info on this family. I am interested in the daughter Antoinette, born in 1838 and any other children of this family. Stephen Sweet in Freetown, Cortland Co., NY. In 1850 - dwelling/household - 1784 - 1818 Stephen age 52; farmer; born in NY. Minerva age 30; born in NY. (this could be a niece) Alfred age 19; laborer; born in NY. Allen age 16; laborer; b. NY. Asel age 15; laborer; b. NY. Antoinette age 11; b. NY Amanda age 9; b. NY Stephen age 76; b. NY This has to be his father. I have seen posted that Stephen has a brother, Michael M. Both Stephen Jr. and Stephen Sr. and their wives are buried in McGraw Village Cemetery Also buried there are Michael and his 2 wives and A.J. (Andrew J.), his wife Mary and their son Frank E. (Eugene). Andrew, Mary and Frank were in the census of Walworth Co., WI in 1860, Antoinette was living with them. In 1870 census Andrew and family are in Clinton, Rock Co., WI. They had to have returned to Cortland in early 1870s since Frank E. died in 1875. I would appreciate any info on this family. Helen
I am trying to find anything I can about the families of Ogilvie Mortimer Morse who married Mary Christina Van Hoesen in Cortland County New York. I know that Ogilvie's parents were Daniel Winchester Morse and Jane Kendall Carruth and that Mary Christina Van Hoesen's parents were Rachel Van Hoesen and Richard Van Hoesen. What I don't have are dates and places of births, marriages, etc. Thanks, Dale in California
Hello, Awhile back I saw a message inquiring about the term "Neat Cattle". Last night while browsing a "new" old book I just received from the Bunny on Sunday I found the term quite by chance. The book is "Black's Law Dictionary" and lists old and archaic terms. The first I saw was listed under the word BOVINE as was as follows: BOVINE From the Latin "bos," meaning cow or bull. "Neat cattle" are animals belonging to the genus "bos," a term not embracing horses, sheep, goats, or swine. "Cattle" as generally used in the Western States means "neat cattle" straight-backed, domesticated animals of the bovine genus regardless of sez. It includes cows, bulls, and steers, but not horses, mares, geldings, colts, mules, jacks, or jennies, goats, hogs, sheep, shoats, or pigs. State v. District Court of Fifth Judicial Dist. in and for Nye County 174 P. 1023, 1025, 42 Nev. 218. I then went to see if there was listing itself for the term, as I found: NEAT CATTLE. Oxen or heifers. "Beeves" may include neat stock, but all neat stock are not beeves. Castello v. State, 36, Tex. 324; Hubotter v. State, 32 Tex. 479. Straight-backed, domesticated animals of the bovine genus regardless of sex, and is not generally but may be, taken to mean calves, or animals younger than yearlings. It includes cows, bulls, and steers, but not horses, mares, geldings, colts, mules, jacks, or jennies, goats, hogs, sheep, shoats, or pigs. State b. District Court of Fifth Judical Dist. in and for Nye County, 42 Nev. 218, 174 P. 1023, 1025; State v. Swager, 110 Wash. 431, 188 P. 504, 506. The next entry was also interesting: NEAT-LAND. Land let out to the yeomanry. Cowell. This answer is certainly coming late, but maybe like an old silly joke I know: "Better "Nate" than lever." Sandy [email protected]

Greetings from the land of yellow cars. The pollen is falling like snow as the oak trees are sheding their pollen. Chrissy Frank Kindler Seamans was a brother to Mary Lillian Seamans. I didn't copy all of the family data from the book but you can find the Seamans Genealogy at the Cortland Historical Society and the Cortland Library: Seamans Family of America as Descended from Thomas Seamans of Swansea, MA 1687, compiled by John Julian Lawton, printed Syracuse, NY 1933 # 1712 page 182: Frank Kindler Seamans (Julian 816) (William 101) (William 28) (John 4) Thomas 1 Frank was born 1854 so Mary Lillian should be placed a few pages from him. Listers: I am trying to identify a photograph which appears to have been taken about the 1870's. Photographers names are - Selover and Schutt Cortland, NY It appears to be a cabinet size picture 4 1/4 X 6 1/2 The 1889 Cortland Directory lists the photographers but I would like to know if they were in business in the late 1870's or early 1880's. Appreciate all comments. Mary
