    2. Vicki Titus
    3. Does anybody on the list ever use a PDA or web enabled phone to access the net? If so, please contact me. I know that Web enabled phones have their own language, but I don't know about PDA's. I think they can use regular pages. If there is a large amount of phone-owning users, I will start to set up a sub set of the site for them also. (say that 3 times fast) <grin> Vicki

    2. Tim Stowell
    3. If the weather will play nice, I plan to be visiting Chenango and Madison counties the week of March 19th. I'll be driving up from Tennessee on Saturday/Sunday the 17/18th. I plan to see what few relatives I have left among the living - and a good section of those on the other side. I've not been to New York since the fall of 1994. I'd love to meet some of you if possible. If anyone from these lists would be interested in such, please contact me privately and I'll see what we can work out. 1. [NYCORTLA] Lovina Severance
    2. It has been some time since I posted this list, but things always change everyday...I am searching for the parents of my ggg grandmother Lovina SEVERANCE Howe..... b. 14 February 1824 in NY (according to census records) the birthdate is from a very old book my g grandmother had made in about 1920. The reason I am posting here is because on the IGI somebody has a Lovina Severance daughter of a John SEVERANCE and Melvina DUTTON....same birthdate as my Lovina in Truxton, Cortland County...except my book was made by my great grandmother prior to the IGI. Any ideas....anything familiar? Thank you much, Christine Matha "A genealogist must have the patience of Job; the curiosity of a cat; the stubborness of a mule; eyesight of an eagle; be blessed with the luck of the irish and the stanima of a camel to go long hours without food or drink." 3. Libby / Vicki My recommendation for a limited time research project would be the Cortland County Historical Society Museum. 25 Homer Avenue, Cortland, NY 13045 (607) 756-6071 I have recently started using thier resources / references and found many good leads / information. They have a considerable size library and the attendants have been very helpful. You tell them who and what your looking for and they can almost over whelm you with material. Check thier open hours. There is a fee for research time, but actually very reasonable. I have resently became a member, anticipating the time I will spend there. Hope this helps. 1. [NYCORTLA] POORHOUSE information needed
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. Well, actually...I need information about this website .... http://www.cnyric.org/history/cortland/fsbarry/s_fsbar.htm It is a wonderful (!) webpage by a Mrs. Wright's classroom in "Cortland City". It has a photo story they did about their old poorhouse. One problem....can't find contacts on the website. Another problem....can't find a Cortland City in my usual lookup sources. Could someone please check this out for me? I would like to feature their work on my website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Any assistance will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    1. [NYCORTLA] Next project announcement
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. Now that the Smith's History project is starting to wind down, it's time to announce the next project for Cortland Co GenWeb - In the past few years, there have been several efforts to recreate the missing 1890 census. This usually involves directories from that time frame being posted along with the 1890 veterans listing. That is going to our next big project. (A note of thanks here to Jack E., who found the 1889 directory for me). The first step will be to get the directory online. If you wish to volunteer to help with entry for the project, please check the Available sections listing at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/dir1889.htm and then e-mail me with the sections you would like to have sent to you. Soon as I get a town or two built, I will be adding the dir1889 page to the directory front end page. Vicki

    3. Does anyone know if any Baptist Church records exist for Truxton or Solon for before 1835? The LDS has some filmed that I've found in both towns, but no marriage records. If anyone has done any church research in that area and give me any hints as to how to begin, I'd really appreciate it! If anyone happens to have access to such records and has time to help me find some of my Graves ancestors in Truxton after 1820 (and before 1835), that would be really wonderful! Thanks, Meg

    1. [NYCORTLA] 1800 DeRuyter Census
    2. Daniel H. Weiskotten
    3. Hello All: I have just finished up a very interesting little project that is sort of a test case for what it is I have been working towards for the past 20 years. I have taken the 1800 Town of DeRuyter Census and have figured out where everyone listed lived (or actually all but 10 families). The list is not long, but by using all the land records I have been working with I was able to find the lots on which people lived and therby figure out the route that the census taker followed. What made this a great test case is that although the 1800 Town of DeRuyter included some 100,000 acres and the present towns of DeRuyter, Georgetown (both in Madison Co.) and Otselic, Lincklaen, German and Pitcher (in Chenango Co.) there were very few people living there. There were only 68 households (two were bachelors living alone) with a total population of 290 individuals. When I did my research I found that not one person was living within the bounds of the present towns of Georgetown and Otselic and that the vast majority of the other towns were still wild lands (other areas to the north and south were well on their way to heavy settlement). This area, even today, is poor land and sparsly settled, but what I found was even more strikng than I expected. There were definite clusters of settlement, principally along the rich lands of the valley bottoms, along the banks of the Otselic River and upper branches of Tioughnioga Creek. These places that were occupied by 1800 were the places that became small settlements and which still survived today as small rural communities, including the Village of DeRuyter, Quaker Basin, Lincklaen, Union Valley, North Pitcher, Ufford Corners, Pitcher and German. Some families did lived in isolation from the rest, several in scattered valley-bottom situations, but three families lived on very high ground at the tops of ridges. This latter situation is puzzling unless they were thinking to escape the sickly lowlands or they had purchased their property without having seen it and were still trying to eek a living from the poor and stoney soil. Please stop in my pages to take a look at some of the work I have done. Go to the main page, then to "What's New?" and check out the DeRuyter Census pages. I have tons and tons of other material, so have fun and browse to your heart's content. The little search engine has finally been updated too! http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/ I'll be away for a few days, but please feel free to drop any questions or comments to me - I'll be happy to see what I can find (or fix the goofs that you find!) when I get back on-line. Dan W.
