    1. [NYCORTLA] Stat data about queries
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. I am just starting to implement stats on my sites. Don't have them on Cortland Co. yet, but I do on my Broome County site. (Remember, I do queries manually on those sites; never used GenConnect so it is a pretty good indicator of what the users do on the site). Not on the individual query pages yet, but only on the front end. Checking over the logs, about 5% of the hits are for users going thru the front end to the queries. This doesn't count how many find the data thru the search engine. I am going to add the stat collection code to the individual query pages and see what that shows us. Will probably have it done by lunchtime. When it is done, we can get an idea of how many hits the individual pages get. Vicki

    2. Judith Mullally-Boatman
    3. Thank you so much Mr. Stowell, The information posted to this list concerning GenWeb and some of the concerns some of us may have was so very much welcomed. US GenWeb and all of the GenWeb sites are so much appreciated and I personally do not know what I would ever do without GenWeb. I feel much relieved to know it is and will still be there and growing. GenWeb is the one and only source that I use all across the country. Thank you all of the co-ordinators for an unbeatable job. Judith Mullally-Boatman

The USGenWeb Project is not sponsored by Rootsweb. Rootsweb has been very generous to the USGenWeb Project and currently houses our national domains - www.usgenweb.org - www.usgenweb.net . The original owner of Rootsweb was an early support of the Project and was kind enough to give us unlimited space back in the days when space cost a lot more per megabyte than it does today. Because of his contributions of space and other services the USGenWeb Project has had the freedom to expand in ways that we may not have otherwise been able to. Ancestry's policies have no effect on how our Bylaws come into effect nor do our Bylaws have any effect on Ancestry. Tim Stowell National Coordinator USGenWeb Project

GenWeb, all of it, sponsored by Rootsweb, Rootsweb is totally owned by Ancestry et al, this may be a fine legal point however, would that fact, Ancestry owning all, supercede any or all of the by laws?? Off of the above topic, I would like to say also, I have had a lot of contacts from genealogy friends, they were unaware that My Family.com is also Ancestry. I have lots of friends who have humongous gedcoms on My Family, they worked for years on all of it, as all of you also know. I am fairly sure I did read some time ago, for all intent and purpose, ancestry or My Family etc., they so to speak own those databases, compiled data. Many of my friends, they hope to in a small way for their families, desktop publish all of their data, one wonders-after putting up a site at My Family, is this option available to them, many are assuming that it is. I however am not so sure. Posters on either the NYCity or Brooklyn List-this past week complaining about others printing off the web all of their databases they worked so hard for, well wondering how they would feel about these issues. No one anywhere has been spelling out up front just what implications have come about as a result of the purchase of Rootsweb Data Co-Operative. It makes me feel bad when someday they may find out what they worked so hard for, is not theirs exclusively anymore. J.M.B.

Vicki -----Original Message----- From: Connie Bates [SMTP:clbates_gen@worldnet.att.net] Sent: Monday, June 25, 2001 4:53 PM To: BOARDS-ADMINS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BD-ADM] Copyrights Issue Resolved Look guys - did any of you *ever* read the AUP for posting to the (old) GenConnect Boards? They were explicit about the copyright, and I am sure that the copyright still stands. You could post anything you wanted. You own the post. You can *never* remove anything you post - and you give explicit permission for RootsWeb (and anyone who purchased RootsWeb) the right to redistribute, or DO WHATEVER THEY WANT with those posts. So - what is the problem? They did what they said they could do. The USGenWeb *never* owned GenConnect. RootsWeb did. RootsWeb was a COMMERCIAL ENTITY for Pete's sake! Ancestry is a commercial entity. The posts are still *FREE* just like they promised they would be. GenConnect no longer exists, and the posts have been converted to a new format, giving Ancestry a copyright on the way they are presented on the web. If *you* posted that info - *you* can post that info someplace else in YOUR OWN FORMAT. If you can get permission from whomever else posted, *you* can post that info, too, as long as you have the permission in writing and you use your own format. Don't like being unpaid volunteer for Ancestry? Tough. READ THE RULES. Never make the assumption that they *won't* do what they say they will. They will. 3. To Sydney the last poster to list: No, you are not paranoid. Some are a bit late to realize that all of this would come about when the conglomerate Ancestry purchased our beloved Rootsweb. Said no changes, yea. I then knew and it is here. Expect much, much more. Some genealogists are unaware that all the endeavors, Ancestry, My Family etc. information put on the web has always been gathered, placed on cd rom and sold, at least some of it. A lot of us all supported Rootsweb, but alas not enough of those using it. Sure do wish Rootsweb largest free genealogy endeavor around was really still around. I may be barred from this list, as it comes from the same place. Everyone who has "free web space" from Rootsweb, and also have large, gedcom databases, might see who actually owns these now. I do not know that answer, but do know some at the first pulled them off. Not trying to cause a brew-ha-ha, but like so many others, disturbed by what I knew would begin. Expect more changes-of this I feel certain. J.M.B.

    1. [NYCORTLA] James and Sarah MURDANT
    2. I finally found my Murdant family in Cortland County. I am not sure when they moved there, but they are on the 1850 census for Truxton. I have their death dates: James was July 19, 1852 and Sarah was March 12, 1857. Was there a newspaper in that town or other nearby town that would have carried an obituary for them? Barring that, what records might exist that could tell me where, in England, they were from? They originally settled in Deerfield, Oneida County, arriving there in 1832. I believe, when they died, they left an 11 year old daughter named Harriette. George Murdant, their son, also born in England, died there on May 29, 1853. All three were buried in Truxton Village Cemetery. I really want to follow this one out, since my father's name was also James Murdant (Jones for good measure). Any ideas? Many thanks in advance. 1. [NYCORTLA] PATTERSONs in Cortland Co, NY
    2. Carol Tolley
    3. Hi Everyone, I am looking for any info on John PATTERSON born in Ireland who immigrated to the US before the Revolutionary War. Also, his son, James B. PATTERSON who served in the War of 1812 and lived in CORTLAND Co.. I have found a James in the Census Records of 1825 for Preble, Cortland Co, where he is listed as having 6 males, 5 females in his household. There is also a James PATTERSON in the Census Records of 1825 for Willet, Cortland Co, who has 4 males and 3 females in his household. By 1835 census, neither are in Willet or Preble, but there is a James PATTERSON listed in the 1835 Census for Cortlandville. My gr gr grandfather, Charles Hamilton PATTERSON, and his brother, Walter J. PATTERSON were both born in Cortland Co, NY. Charles on 22 June 1825. He married Althesia (Alethia) BARKER in NY. They had one daughter, Marietta, born 14 Jul 1848 in NY. They migrated to Jackson Co, IA in 1856 and lived the remainder of their lives there. I have yet to find anything on him in Cortland. Walter was born in 1809/10 in Cortland Co. He married Sophia FLANDERS of Cattaraugus Co, NY. They were in Ashtabula Co, OH in about 1838, where their son Zera was born along with several other children. They may have moved back to NY sometime before 1856 when they then immigrated to Jackson Co, IA and lived the rest of their lives there. County history (Jackson Co, IA) states that Walter's father was James B. and his grandfather was John PATTERSON. If any of these names fit with any of your PATTERSONs I would like to hear from you. Thanks. Carol Tolley

    1. [NYCORTLA] Re: Irving's Knickerbocker book
    2. Tim, "Knickerbocker History" is a great piece of early 19th-century American literature, but it isn't history. Think of history as it would have been written by Mark Twain or by the crew at Saturday Night Live, and you'll have an idea of how reliable "Knickerbocker History" would be as a textbook. It tells the story of New Amsterdam as a series of adventures and parodies and satires and tall tales. It must have been funnier to Irving's contemporaries than it is to us, because they would have been familiar with the history and dialects that Irving stretched and twisted. I think most of us would find it very hard reading -- perhaps interesting in its way but hardly worth the effort if you're more interested in straight history than in regional literature. I wonder if list members have suggestions for histories of New York that are more likely to be of interest to most of us?
