Most of the Methodist Churches in the early years were served by circuit riders, and the records of the church may have remained with the minister rather than in the church. Here in Willet they met in barns when a circuit rider came through, and didn't even have a church building until the late 1800's. ----- Original Message ----- From: David and Dale Barnes <dlbarnes@erols.com> To: <NYCORTLA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 20, 2001 6:50 AM Subject: Re: [NYCORTLA] Churches > > Carol: > Found the following information while searching the Cortland County rootsweb > site. > > http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/qsys/qryd.htm > > Under entry for ELLISON: in the Cortland County Queries D-E. > > ...... When Rootsweb combined all the GenConnect messages into 1 big file, it made some pretty confusing assumptions. For example, a query for more information on a specific will ended up classified as a will. That was because the will and the resulting query was posted to the will section of the board. When the board was separated, it made sense, but it doesn't now. Queries and/or requests for someone to find an obit and obits themselves are also in the same boat so to speak. Although we don't use the message system the way other GenWeb sites do, I still want to sort things out. I will be changing the classifications and also some of the headings to match the following guidelines: Requests for addition info from an existing resource posted to the board - query Requests for a lookup of an obit or other data without an existing resource - lookup Answer to a query or lookup request with actual data - filed under that data type Answer to a query or lookup requesting more info - query Actual resource - under that classification Multiple resources listed in 1 message - (death info in pension file for example) - notes directing the user from the sub section to the section holding the data. In the above example, a note under the Death classification directing users to the pension file page. I will also be changing the Subject lines on the notes as time goes by. Subject lines such as "My Grandfather" will be changed to include a full name where possible. I will probably get around to deleting messages without a clear connection to the county, but that won't be until later. These changes might take a while to take effect since the index to the Rootsweb messages is only rebuilt every few days or so. This is an ongoing project and may take a looooooong time. Vicki
This letter is not meant as a criticism for anyone, just as a overview of computer freezes for the less computer savvy users that may read this. There are several reasons for a computer to freeze up, or appear to. Any hardware/software problems, including mouse shorts, cards not seated properly, software conflicts, old or crimped wires etc. Electricity flucuations in the area (UPS's help fix this). Not clearing out temp files can cause the system to slow looking for prior versions in the cache or hang when it runs out of working space. Java applets and/or animated cursors and gifs, not necessarily on the site you are on, but sometime during your session. (This is a recognized Windows bug, but Microsoft claims it can't do anything about it - part of allowing multiple windows up and/or history). I try to use minimum amount of graphics on my sites. Large pages using cold fusion or Java. Again, nature of the beast. Any large data pages, depending on your system. WebTV is especially prone to this. Because, I limit page size on the sites I am webmaster for to less than 200K, preferably less than 175. Large search results. A lot of the search results have to be held in memory, and so it uses a lot of memory. I suspect that is why the original limit on Rootsweb message board searches was 1000 as an attempt to not overload the system. There are ways to prevent the problems from happening. If anyone wants a list of these steps, please feel free to contact me privately. No need to clog up the list. Also feel free to forward this to any mail list or person you think it might help. I am trying to find what churches might have been in the Cortland Co area in about 1840 - 1855 time period. In particular, Methodist Churches. I am looking for birth records/church baptism records for my PATTERSON family who were in the area of Cortland and Tompkins Co during that time period. Thanks for any help and reply. I saw this item for sale at eBay, and thought that someone on the list might be interested. Smith's History on the Cortland site specifically mentions Darius, whose picture is in the page: "Mr. Rowley came to South Cortland in 1826 and bought the place now owned by the heirs of Darius Sanders ; the latter was a brother of Charles Sanders the school book author. " There is a query on the site from ginman9@home.com, but the address seems to be invalid. I'm hoping that ginman9, or a relative, is on the list. I'm not involved with the auction in any way; just thought you might want to know. Hello, I am doing research on Diners and Lunch Wagons. If anyone has information on specific Diners that exist, or did exist in the county please contact me. Even if you do not have information but know of someone who has information or somewhere I should check, please contact me with that information. I am running my own beta test of a product that could be set up the same way I used the old genconnect boards, as a backup/alternative entry method. Why don't you take a look and and see what you think. http://pluto.beseen.com/boardroom/u/52945/ Vicki

I have analyzed the first half day's worth of data and the results are astounding. Approximately 12 hours ago, I installed the stat code in the new pages - all queries, will front end and obit front to simulate the GenConnect functions that had entries on them. I used user stats to eliminate any possible refresh/reloading distorting the counts. Since then, there have been 64 users to the site. Since 1 was me, I subtracted 1 and made the total users = 63. Of those users, 41 visited the new pages. (really 42, but again had to subtract myself). That implies almost 2/3 rds of users visited GenConnect type functions. In fact, all but one of those visited queries - that odd one visited wills, and is still on the site as I am writing this summary. Queries are obviously a BIG part of the usage of the site. Vicki
Sounds like the Halberts are back at it again--same MO, same price for nothing, just a different name. BEWARE!! They are crooks--You get nothing for your $35.00 Spread the word---Bob Evans

There is a company called Morphcorp LLC who are sending snail mailings to people across the entire United States. They are offering a "Book and CD ROM" purported to contain "all the (your family) records" at the pre-publication price of $34.95 plus a $5 order processing fee. These books will not contain all family records if any at all. They normally will contain addresses and phone numbers of folks with the same last name across the United States which is something you can get in any phone book on the internet. Our recommendation is to pass up this offer. Your genealogy dollars can be much better spent! The url found on http://www.imagin.net/~tracers/gentips4.htm and was listed under September 2000 article. (Another responded that she ordered and received a telephone directory).
