I Can't remember how the reply bit works on this msg to the mail lists. So if I goof pse forgive. I notice someone asks for SKS who might be going to the Cortland County Historical society to do a lookup for them I would appreciate the same thing if someone could find birth record of my GGgmo Louisa Hills born abt 1813 in Truxton to Joel Hills and Mary "Polly" (Fox) Hills. Willing to pay for copy of same and other cost if any. Stan
If SKS, with a little extra time on his or her hands, is venturing to the Cortland County Historical Society, I would very much appreciate any information about James D. PRIEST and his wife, Sylva, listed in the 1880 Census, with their children, Rose, Dexter, John and Jared H. Thomas (presumably Sylva's by a previous marriage). Information desired includes date of marriage and parents' names, if possible. Thank you very much, in advance. Michael E. Donnelly

My GGgfa Wm Sanders is my toughie. Do none of you connect to my Sanders line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- I checked the microfilms of the old Waterloo City Directories today and found a few entries. Keep in mind that not every year was filmed, but at least this might help you figure out what happened when! Microfilm CD-01 1873-74 only Page 47 Sanders, -----, teamster, res 5th & Walnut ES (This reads, last name Sanders, no first name given, residence at corner of 5th & Walnut streets on the East Side of Waterloo) Microfilm CD-02 1886 only Page 37 Sanders, Dennison, teamster, Commercial (This reads last name, first name, occupation, residence West side of town) Microfilm CD-03 1888-89; 1897-98 1888-89 Page 133 Sanders, Dennison, laborer, h 126 N. Commercial Sanders, Eliza, widow of William, h 126 N Commercial (this reads that Dennison was a laborer and home address was 126 North Commercial Street, West Side and that Eliza, widow of William also lived at same address...I would say it is likely Eliza is Louisa, Dennison's Mother) 1897-98 No Sanders listed (also checked outlying areas included in Directory) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Now Stan, here's what I think you'll be thrilled to have: the obituary for Louisa! Microfilm Waterloo Daily Courier January 1, 1898-April 30, 1898. Paper dated April 1, 1898, Page 5 (far left column, 6th article/paragraph): FUNERAL OF MRS. SANDERS The funeral of Mrs. Louisa Sanders, who died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bidwell, occurred this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence. Mrs. Sanders was 85 years of age and had been ill since last fall. She was the mother of twelve children; eleven of them are living. They are: Mrs. Green, Dunkerton; Mrs. Addie Richards, Fairbank; Mrs. Maria Bidwell, Waterloo; Denison, Goldfield; Elijah, Dows; Columbus, Jasper, Joel, Hamilton, Mo; Mrs. Celia Bean, Los Angeles, Cal; Mrs. Hattie Hutchins, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Eunice Adams, Wapsie Mills; Mrs. Clarinda Coon, Lincoln. Stan, Dunkerton, Fairbank and Eagle Grove are all close to Waterloo; Lincoln is about 50 miles southwest. I'm not sure where Goldfield is; I'd guess Wapsie Mills is in northeast Iowa somewhere along the Wapsipinicon River (look around Independence or Brandon Iowa to locate river) so you might want to get a good map of Iowa and some colored pins to mark the locations...I'd guess all but the Hamilton, Missouri and Los Angeles, California kids made it to her funeral! So finally, here is the info about Louisa HILLS' parents and her 12 siblings from "The Hills Family in America": 252. Joel-5 (Elisha-4, John-3, Joseph-2, William-1), b. E. Glastonbury, Hartford Co., CT, 4 Apr. 1788; d. Sylvester, Green Co., WI, 19 June 1876. Married, E. Glastonbury, 6 Mar. 1810, to Polly (dau. of Amos) Fox, b. E. Glastonbury, CT, 1792; d. Married, Eugene, Lane Co., OR, 1853, to Sarah Blair (11 children, all born Eugene, OR). 564. Nancy A., b. Manlius, NY, 26 Apr. 1826. Married, Sylvester, WI, to Ransom Skillings (9 children). 565. Elijah E., b. Manlius, NY, 15 Sept. 1830. Married, 1878, to Mrs. Angelina Barber (no children). 566. Erastus, b. Lincklean, NY, 25 Apr. 1833. Married to Catherine Kane (no children). 567. Wallace P., b. Cicero, NY, 9 Oct. 1836. Married, Sylvester, WI, to Minnie Kane (no children of record). 568. Joseph. 569. Putnam, b. Onondaga Co., NY. (five children) 570. Fidelia, b. Cortland Co., NY; d. Cortland Co., NY, aged 13 months. Also as you note below, Cornelius HILLS moved to Oregon. In fact, he must have done so sometime between 19 Feb. 1851 (his marriage to Sophronia Briggs in Iowa) and 3 Apr. 1852 (birth in Oregon of Mary S., his first born). Given the traveling conditions in his day, I would guess he did so in the summer of 1851. A pretty adventurous family I'd say, given that they went West only 8 years after the Oregon Trail really started getting much use. The following I just found this week on the Onondaga Co. website. Patricia, I hope you may find this of interest. In the book Pioneer History of Cortland County and the Border Wars of New York, by H.C. Goodwin,p. 181-182, published in 1855: "It will be observed that we have heretofore spoken of Virgil as township No. 24 of military lands, granted to the soldiers of the Revolution. It should, however, be noted in this place, that the whole of the town of Virgil did not originally belong to the military grant. A strip of about 1 1/2 miles in width from east to west, across its southern side, was taken from the Ten Township grant to Masachusetts...." "In 1976, John Gee, from Wyoming, Pa., moved to lot 21, having the previous year erected his dwelling, and made some other preparations for the more convenient reception of his family. He was a soldier of the Revolution and was well worthy of the heroic title. His house was composed of logs 12 by 16. His family consisted of himself, wife, father, mother, and six children. Some of Mr. Gee's descendants still occupy the original premises." There is no mention of your family, Givens, in this book that I could see. There is more about the town of Virgil and its settlement. It was organized April 8th, 1804. Surveyed in 1790. I am seeking information regarding Gee Hill, Town of Virgil...... I know it was founded by John Gee........my father was born in that homestead............(I remember playing there as a child, when my grandfather owned it) Others living on Gee Hill were Morris Givens (my grandfather), Harrison C Givens (my great-grandfather)....Earl Givens, Clarence Givens. I was told that Samuel Givens came in 1804. He had a land grant for service in the Revolutionary War. The Gee Hill Cemetery lists the children of William and Aner Givens........William is the son of Samuel Givens. William and Aner are buried in Cortland........... I would love to find out where all these people lived, and the sequence of ownership............. Any help would be appreciated Patricia Givens Warner
I am searching for information regarding Benjamin C Parker born about 1833 and his wife Electra Stacy born about 1836 in Cortland County, New York. They are my 2nd gr grandparents....... Benjamin is one of 10 Children of Thomas Henry Parker and Aurilla Chase. We have not found out when and where they died or where they are burried. In 1869 Cortland County Directory lists Benjamin Parker living on Lot 62, farmer, 55 acres. The 1876 Atlas Map shows Benjamin Parker living on Adams Rd. This road connects Daisy Hollow and Owego Hill Roads. Benjamin and Electra had 3 Children.....(1)...Truman C. Parker.......who was a bookkeeper in Dryden, NY....and married Georgianna Clark...(2)..Thomas Henry Parker was born in 1860 in Lapeer and died in 1940 in Harford. He married Orpha Hammon (or Dimon??)......... ................(3) Salina Parker who married Al Williamson Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have recently seen an old family bible for Geo Luce and Lydia Benton, married at Virgil, Cortland Co in 1838. Some family members were located in Union Centre, Broome Co in 1871. Anyone interested in more info, let me know. Ned Schimminger, just outside Niagara Falls
Hello All, My trails have now led from Norfolk England to Cortland and Broome County New York. I am researching the surname 'Summers' in this area and have found entries on the 1920 Broome County census for whom I believe are my great uncles George and Wm Summers. I have also found an 1899 immigration record for George and Wm's younger brother Maurice, that actually shows on the transcript 'going to join brother Wm in Broome County' it also says something that looks like 'Kellaway' (?) The Marathon Village Cemetary site has shown that the George and Wm were buried there along with other members of the family. Now I am just needing some guidance or assistance in locating descendants of this family. The names I have found are listed below, is there anyone in Marathon that might be able to help with a bit of local family history? Regards Lisa Young (nee Summers) Australia GEORGE SUMMERS (1872) wife Carrie Summers son Leland son Lionel son Gordon son Eldon daughter Linda son Donald WM SUMMERS (1870) wife Myra son Alfred daughter Alice
Since I will be posting this to other list's Louisa Hills Sanders is the dau., of Joel Hills and Mary "Polly" Fox of Cortland County, Ny. Louisa was born Sept 17, 1813 in Truxton, Cortland County and was married in Manlius, Ononadaga County abt 1830 to Wm Charles Sanders. Some one recently asked if G-aunt Hattie had been in Kansas? Well I still don't know but since her married name is in the obit perhaps you can answer the question. If any of you connceticut to the nicknames or any of them for that matter would love to hear from you. But want to find the given names of those without them. I'm posting the documents just as received for future generations of researchers. I have learned several or more things from it. Besides being tickled to death that my cousin Nancy (Hills) Lamps researched it for me and I didn't know a thing about her efforts until she sent it to me. First that my people were in an Iowa County not mentioned in previous FHB's that I'm aware of other than my Ggmo Louisa was buried there and I couldn't understand why. Two that there are two more children that are not listed in previous history. That's going be a bit of problem to sort out until another cousin comes forward with the information. The reason it's a problem. Is because they used nicknames instead of given names. Perhaps I can solve that with census information. Three that my Great grand parent's Joel Sanders and his wife Rewama Cessna were in Hamilton, Caldwell County, Missouri. This was not previously known or mentioned in the FHB. I often puzzled over how my gfa George Washington Riddle of Chillicothe, Livingston County Missouri met my gmo Mary "Molly" Sanders. My Ggfa John Wesley Riddle of Rono, Perry County, Indiana settled in Caldwell County, Missouri. The info in relation to Wm Sanders and Spanish War Vet can not be my Wm Charles Sanders because he would have been 90--100 years+ at the time. I left it in for you other Sanders researchers. Hi Stan, I checked the microfilms of the old Waterloo City Directories today and found a few entries. Keep in mind that not every year was filmed, but at least this might help you figure out what happened when! Oh, I also found "a" William Sanders in a cemetery index, but there are no dates on it: Fairview Cemetery, located at 611 Fairview Avenue, Waterloo, Iowa 50703 (Noted as there are 3 different ones locally) Section M, Lot #123 SANDERS, William Co. C 9 US OInf. Sp. Am. War (From this I'd guess Mr. Sanders participated in the Spanish American War which happened between April and August of 1898 and that he was in the Infantry section of Company C. I have typed it just as it was typed in the index...you might want to check with someone more familiar with the military than I for a better reading of this.) Based on the little I found today, I'd guess that Mr. Sanders may have died during the Spanish American War, and they never recovered his body, so just put the headstone there as a memorial. It's also possible his exact date of death was unknown, but keep in mind not everyone put dates on headstones. Also, because Mrs. Sanders' funeral was at her daughter's house and so soon after her death and there was no mention of where she was buried, I'm wondering if she was destitute and they could not afford a stone for her. She was NOT at the Fairview Cemetery where Mr. Sanders was found. I wasn't able to check all the cemetery indexes as a good portion of them had been sent to the bindery for repair! I'll try another research room, at the local museum later this week or early next, to see if they have more info on any of the Sanders' family, and will let you know what I discover! Stan
From: GenJoSue@aol.com To: NY-WESTERN-L@rootsweb.com Check out Animated Map I found this on another list that I belong to and I feel that it is an excellent map of the development of New York. -- Joan -- Click here: Animated Map http://www.marist.edu/summerscholars/97/animated.htm It is an animated map of NY. It begins with a map showing the present shape of the state, but the speckled area was not part of it at the dates shown. It shows how Albany Co. was so much larger at one time and that Vermont was once part of it. Pick the county that interests you and watch the changes, or find the area that the county is in today and just wait for it to appear. The text on the left which tells what changes are occurring are not on my screen long enough to read. If there is a way to slow down the animation, I hope someone will let me or the list know how to do it.
