I will be in the Cortland area sometime during the third week of September. Can anyone suggest libraries or other research facilities that might have information concerning Cortland County residents for the period 1800-1850? Thank you for your help. Jane Holt JANECH@prodigy.net
In response to your inquiry about how Thomas Donnelly would travel back in the early 1800's... I have a Michael Donnelly who had one horse, according to his Civil War paperwork. He bought one pair of spurs & straps for 60 cents too! (Do you think Thomas borrowed Mike's horse to get from Albany Co. to Onondaga Co.?) Michael Donnelly was said to be born in Clougharney County, Tyrone Ireland on October 28, 1838, according to what his mother told him. (His brother was Barney Donnelly & was in the 47th NY Infantry.) His parents were Peter & Betty Donnelly. He married Rebecca McKenna Donnelly August 21, 1865 in St. John the Evangelist Church in Syracuse. He said that in 1850 & 1860, he lived with a farmer by the name of Z.B. Randall in Chuyler, Cortland Co. He enlisted in Co. B 3rd NY Cavalry, and then Co. B. 1st Mounted Riffles which changed to the 4th Provincial Cavalry. His paperwork also stated that he got "vericose veins" in the line of duty. He lived at 1118 Mulberry St., 132 Richmond Ave, and 110 Prospect Park in Syracuse. He died Feb. 19, 1922 & is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Dewitt with his wife Rebecca (d. Nov. 27, 1926), brother Barney (Bernard, d. May 21, 1914), in laws James & Ann (or Nancy) Campbell McKenna (James d. Feb. 7, 1875, Ann d. Jan. 19, 1871), and a Peter Donnelly (d. Aug. 8, 1880). Michael had a brother John in Cincinnatus, who survived him. Peter Donnelly was buried from his brother Michael's home in the Town of Clay. Was this another brother or an uncle? Michael Donnelly listed the following survivors besides his wife: nieces Mrs. Arthur Mudge, Mrs. Benjamin Underwood, and Hugh Donnelly of Cortland. Does anyone have any information on any of these Donnelly family members, any Civil War buffs know about these units, and would there be any records around from the Root Post 151 GAR in Syracuse? Thanks Anne Ruggeri
A visitor sent along an obit with a question regarding the band mentioned below. This band apparently was in the Oxford area? The obit is dated 1910.: "He never tired of playing or of telling of service rendered by the old and somewhat famous "Tinkerport Band" of which he was the last survivor." Ideas or info anyone? Over the next few weeks (months?), I will be converting over to a new server. Since it will require that I change all the e-mail tags and other links to my personal web space on all pages, it might take a while. I will be starting with Broome County, as it has half as many tags. During the same process, I will be adding an e-mail form for queries that will hopefully standardize the function. There will also be an e-mail address specifically for queries. My new e-mail address will be vtitus@cox-internet.com The query address for Broome will be broome@cox-internet.com.... Cortland, when implemented, will be cortland@cox-internet.com. I will notify, or at least try to notify everyone when I turn off IPA, but that will be a LOOOOONG time away. Vicki

Does this help? Cortland Rural Cemetery 110 Tompkins St, Cortland, NY 13045-2429 Phone: (607)756-6022 That would put Cortland Rural Cemetery smack dab in the center of the city of Cortland. Guess it was a little more rural when the cemetery was first set up. Hi Vicki and list members, Many of my family are buried at Cortland Rural Cemetery, was in fact just out east last summer. Back-a time ago I guess it would be Cortland, Cortland Co., NY. But the expanding and growth of the area being so much since the cemetery began, technically speaking I guess it is in what is Cortlandville, once a quite small place, but not now true. Most people I know who also know the area still refer to it as being in the city of Cortland. So what to do in case like that? Probably most people would recognize Cortland (city), but those not familiar who wish to find and or contact the sexton, may have problem looking in Cortland proper. Many years ago, cemetery at edge of city of Cortland, used to have a little drive between several little towns in area, no longer true as many abut one another the same as in other places. I guess the above is surely no answer as to what you should do. But Cortlandville is indeed where the cemetery lies within now. Keep up the fantastic work Vicki and all of your helpers also ! I think I may have something in error on the GenWeb web site and would like some data to help me clear it up. Where is the Cortland Rural Cem: in Cortlandville or the Town of Cortland. I posted that it was in the Town of Cortlandville, but I'm starting to think that might be wrong. Does anybody know which is correct? Vicki Hall Titus Co Ordinator of Cortland Co. GenWeb site.
Seeking confirmation of the offspring of Stephen Hopkins and Mary Davis. They came to Cortland County, after their wedding in 1802 Rhode Island. Stephen was the son of Oliver Hopkins and Susannah Bennett, they also migrated to Cortland County and are buried in Lapeer Cemetery. Seems like the whole family was in Cortland County for a time. I believe that Stephen Hopkins and Mary Davis are the parents of Stephen B. Hopkins, who was born 19 May 1810 NY, but no proof for years on this. Peggy Kimbell

I wish I could find the parents of John Turner Butman, b DEC 25, 1825 In Otsego Co., NY. One relative long ago wondered if his father could have been a Joseph, but I don't know what they based that thought on. John T. Butman m. Orsina Grant on Jan. 31, 1847. I wonder if his mother could have been a TURNER. Someone once thought she was an Annie Turner, but I don't know what they based that on either. John T. Butman d. June 12, l894 in Taylor, Cortland Co., NY One of his sons was my gggf, William Fletcher Butman, b 3 Apr. l848 in Cooperstown, Cortland Co., NY. He also had a son named Clarence and a daughter named Nancy. Do you think that a census of your county in l860 might tell where John's parents were born? Where could you look to find out his parents' names? A tombstone record for BUTMAN maybe? Would the co. clerk list BUTMAN deaths in a card file? His parents had to be living there in l825 when he was born. Do you know of some sources that I might try? I am desperate.... please help me! I really have to learn his parents names and their country of origin. Thank you so much. Connie Beck 2765 130th ST. Lenox, IA 50851 Phone: 515 333 2537
