    1. [NYCORTLA] Cemetery preservation
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. For all of you that were touched/angered by the story about the old cemetery I sent a link to, you might want to know that some of the cemeteries in our area might be in as bad shape. Town Historians are responsible for cemeteries that are still in use, but I suspect they can only make their limited budgets go so far. Here is part of a note I received from the Lisle historian in the daily flow of things - "The care of old cemeteries should be the responsibility of each town and the historian, as a town official, could take the initiative to see that such care is done. In Lisle, the Odd Fellow's Lodge does the mowing and any other physical maintenance. Other groups could be enlisted to do the same. Of course, some town officials could probably care less. " and farther on in the came letter, sent in 1999 "Last summer, a vandalized cemetery in Whitney Point, NY had the stones repaired by a group that does stone work. All the costs of the repairs was donated, so where there's a will, there's a way. " end of snippets. I don't know the solution to the situation, especially for those of us living so far away. Local people could volunteer to help by recording small unused cemeteries to at least try to save them before they disappear, but for the rest of us.... Vicki

    3. I think if the court denies their petition to take over control of the cemetery, they should sue Rucker to recover the costs. Here Rucker was trying to make a fast buck off of them, and he would end up having to pay them money... Vicki On Friday, September 22, 2000 9:48 PM, Stanford R. 1. [NYCORTLA] possible tip for finding lost children
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. A friend of mine recently gave me a tip for finding my Richard Hall and I thought I would pass it on and see what the rest of you might think about it. She was reviewing an "Orders" book for her area of research in VA, and starting a lot of entries on bound out children. She knew I was having trouble finding Richard, so she asked if I had ever looked at the orders books for NY. I said no. Problem is, I couldn't find anything like an Orders book for NY courts. We looked through the descriptions of each of the various items and decided that minute books were the closest alternative. We chose the Surrogate court, because that was the one with records about guardianships - at least for the time frame I'm looking for (1855-60). I ordered the book for Delaware Co. NY, where Richard was in that time frame, but I thought I would ask if any of you have tried the same thing? Vicki

    3. Greetings List Members and especially to Dan W. First of all, thanks Dan for some of the best data I have encountered. Your History/Genealogy site is terrific. I have it bookmarked and re-visit periodically. I encourage those who have not checked out the page, do so you will be impressed. I have researched not on internet for over 22 yrs. History and Genealogy go hand in hand, no problem for me as I have always enjoyed history. Being able to place our ancestors into that general hisory is unbeatable. This is the Cortland list, my Father was born in Cortland, I research for self and others on many surnames that are supposed to be in certain counties, seems a bit difficult to convince some people how important maps-not new ones-are in doing this, also to spread out from the area they know their ancestors were, I am still thrilled but no more surprised to find them several counties away. And so when looking for someone in Cortland Co., Madison Co., Broome Co., please do not forget to check out Dans site. I found a family who were supposedly in Genessee and definetly in Onondaga Co., Syracuse, what a shock to this person when ever so many old records were found and passed on, from where? Dan's site. Thank you Dan for adding so much of value. There is another county quite near Broome, dang sure wish we could get you to take that site over, oh well no matter. Keep up the fine work. 1. [NYCORTLA] I've been busy again!
    2. Daniel H. Weiskotten
    3. Hello all: Just an update on my latest additions to the Cazenovia, Fenner, and Nelson History Pages ... OK, so you know where your ancestor lived - Town, Village, or County-wise, that is ... How about seeing his or her name on the old maps that people always talk about???? If they lived in the Town or Village of Cazenovia in 1859 - you finally have your chance! I've been busy the past few days (years actually) putting together web pages for various maps that show the Towns of Cazenovia, Fenner, and Nelson. I have a lot of work to do, but I have one of the major segments complete and up and running smoothly! The maps I've been working on look nice, are easy to read, and are put together (or taken apart) to load more efficiently, but what is new and improved and all the more valuable is ... A COMPLETE NAME INDEX of all the people, businesses, churches, manufacturers, etc., that are shown in the Town of Cazenovia and the Village of Cazenovia insert on the large 1859 Wall Map by Jonathan Gillette. Stop in to my Cazenovia, Fenner, and Nelson History Pages and see what I've done. If you had relatives there in 1859 you just might find them and see who their neighbors were. If you aren;t particularly researching Cazenovia, please stop in to see what I've done and gather up some ideas for your own web pages!!!! Stop by the main page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/ go to "What's New!?" and the new links are right at the top. Dan W. Yes, I'm working on the other towns and other maps, so I will eventually get them on line also!

    1. [NYCORTLA] Asa Joiner in Smith's 1885 History
    2. Daniel H. Weiskotten
    3. Hello All: I am looking for a reference to Asa Joiner, tombstone carver, that is siad to be in the 1885 "History of Cortland County" by H.P. Smith. I see that most of this book is on-line at the Cortland County Page http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/smithhis.htm but I find no mention of Asa Joiner nor his tombstone business in the parts that are available. Perhaps it is in the Cortlandville section that is not yet been put on line?? I would very much appreciate it if someone with access to the book could do a look-up for me and find the text I am after. The text I need deals with Asa Joiner and in summary his wife won't marry him because he has no marriage certificate, he cuts and signs a stone for Basheba Joiner (wife of John Joiner), he learned his trade in Rutland VT, when he died they could not find his will. Sorry, but that is about all that was given me and I need the full text! Thanks in advance for any help Dan W. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/Tombstones/CortlandCoCarvers.html

    1. [NYCORTLA] Seeking information on HAIGHT ancestors
    2. Michael
    3. I'm seeking any information on James H. Haight and his descendants. From what I can gather, James H. Haight married an Ada Bouton on January 24, 1827 in Albany County, New York. They then moved to the Cortland County area. He was registered in the 1830 census in the town of Freetown, 1840 in the town of Virgil, 1850 in the town of Cortlandville, and then back in Freetown in 1860. Also recorded in the 1860 census was a James H. Haight, Jr. in Freetown. James & Ada had two other sons, David B. and George H. that I can document, but James I cannot. I am looking for a solid connection between James H. Haight and James H. Haight, Jr. It would be a logical assumption that they are directly related because of the names, but I need definite dates. According to information passed down from my family, James H. Haight (Jr.? - my family makes no mention of a Jr.) married a Deziah\Desiah\Desire Kent from either Truxton or Homer area. They had a daughter, Madge E. Haight, who was my g-g-grandmother. James H. Haight & Ada were buried in Forest Hill cemetary near Blodgett Mills, but I cannot find any trace of James H. Haight & Deziah Kent. My g-g-grandmother grew up in the Truxton area & she and my g-g-grandfather, George hurlbert, are buried in the Cuyler cemetary. I would think that they stayed in the area since their family did. If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated! I can trace James H Haight's ancestors back to 1545, but I need some information so that I can link it all together! I'm looking for any birth, death or marriage dates, etc. I have some information, but I am doubting the accuracy of the information because some of the information seems to conflict with what my family has passed along, etc. Michael Seamans MSEAMANS@ROCHESTER.RR.COM

I have no other information about these people and so far haven't found them anywhere on the net that I have looked. Thanks for any help available. 1. [NYCORTLA] Re: (NYCORTLA) Libraries/Resources
    2. Dear Jane, The Public Library in Cortland holds several shelves of city directories dating back to the early days. I found a great deal of information following family and relatives moving around the city. The Cortland Historical Society at 25 Homer Ave. Records in the county court house also provided valuable data. Rural Hill Cemetery has burial records. Some marble monuments/markers have been laid under a layer of sod to protect them from acid rain destruction, at the time of my visit in the early 90s, the custodian would provide location information and a metal rod to probe for the stone. You were allowed to roll back the sod, gather your information and then replace the sod. There are smaller towns/communities/cemeteries in the county such as Homer, Truxton, Cortlandville etc. where early members of the family may have lived. Good luck, I hope to return for more research in the near future. Jane Dupree researching, Reeeves, Dickerson, Leonard (Truxton), Hamilton.

Cortland Free Library 32 Church Street, Cortland I would also suggest that you find out the name of the historian for the town in Cortland Co. that you interested in and contact them. Each town has a town historian and some of them are very helpful. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/towns.htm and you will see a list of historians. Good luck on your trip.
