I've added in several photos, a gedcom, and am working on a revamp of the Chenango site. I've started with New Berlin but several things, too numerous to mention have been changed, created or amended. I am in the process of reworking the front end and toolbars for Cortland Co. GenWeb. I don't want to rush the changes in for the entire system at once, so I will be doing several pages every day. The names of the pages themselfs haven't changed, just some of the links have moved and/or been duplicated. The site should still be navigable. Vicki
This morning, I've added an index to the History of Richland County, Wisconsin dated 1884. Many surnames familiar to me that are also central New York state names appear here. You might wish to take a look at this - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wirichla/hstyindx.htm I've not completed all the history yet but most of the names should be available for viewing. I Want I want ancestors with names like Rudy Montagnard or Mechiznick Von Steuben or Spetznatz Giafortoni, not Mary Smith or William Johnson. I want ancestors who went to school, could read and write, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees), had their photographs taken once a year - subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate acid free albums with names, dates, and places. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established, still-extant (and indexed) cemeteries, with carved voluble and informative inscriptions on their headstones. I want family members who wrote memoirs, kept diaries, enlisted in the military, particularly officers who served in strategically important (and well documented) skirmishes. I want relatives who served as Congressional members, judges, councilmen, school teachers, county clerks, police officers, firefighters. I want relatives who had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, "religiously" wrote in the family Bible, recording every little event and detailing the familial relationship of every visitor. I want immigrant progenitors to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by the National Archives, to have applied for citizenship in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, joined every patrimonial society, kept journals, listed all their addresses, dated every piece of paper they touched and had paintings made of their houses. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and keep for generations, the tribal homestead and left all the aforementioned pictures, diaries and journals in the library. But most of all I want relatives I can FIND! ------------------------- Source: The Parkhurst Family Journal - Vol. 5, No. 1, Mar, 1999 - used by permission. With this short article, I wish to each and every one of you a blessed Holiday Season. Tim Stowell

Ancestry.com is offering free access to all of its databases through December 21. This is your chance to see why more than 270,000 researchers have chosen to subscribe to Ancestry.com in their quest to discover their family's history. Included in the offer is access to the images of original census records that Ancestry.com recently began posting. These top-quality images represent a more true-to-life depiction of the records and are in most cases better than the original in readability. Ancestry.com's Images Online are scanned in 256 shades of gray to allow for variations in tone, as opposed to the less expensive method of bi-tonal technologies used by competitors. The entire set of U.S. Federal Censuses is expected to be online by spring 2001. A year's access to these images will only cost current Ancestry.com members an additional $39.95, as opposed to competitive offerings that in recent interviews quoted impending subscription costs at as much as $99! In other words, for $99.90 ($59.95 regular subscription + $39.95 Images Online subscription)--which is the price competitors are charging for census only--Ancestry.com members will get access to the census Images Online in better form, plus access to all of Ancestry.com's other offerings. These offerings include such landmark databases as the "PERiodical Source Index (PERSI)," the Biography and Genealogical Master Index (BGMI), the American Genealogical- Biographical Index (AGBI), the 1890 Census Reconstruction Project, the Civil War Research Database, and Slave Narratives, just to name a few. But that's not all. Ancestry.com has been adding databases at a record-breaking pace and is on target to have more than 1 BILLION records online by the end of the year. Recent additions include: --- "The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-33" (see a sample entry at: http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/articles/2071.asp) --- The New York City police census of 1890 --- 1910 Miracode indexes for Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Virginia --- Statewide vital records indexes for a growing number of states --- New York's naturalization petition index of 1907-24 --- Iowa cemeteries --- And much more! Now for a limited time, new members of Ancestry.com will get $10 off the price of an annual data subscription, giving you a year's access to the No. 1 genealogical site on the Internet for only $49.95. And as an added bonus, we'll include a FREE Ancestry Reference Library CD-ROM (a $49.95 value itself!), which includes 15 genealogy reference books to help you research like a pro! OK... I messed up...I'm sorry. Forgot to move the screensaver over when I did the pages. If you try again, it should be there. Vicki
Just wanted to be the first to wish everybody a happy holiday season. In the euphoria (madness?) of the season, I have created a holiday page on each of the Broome and Cortland Websites. Both are accessible thru the index page of their respective sites, but I thought I should also announce it here. About halfway down the page is a link to a screen saver I have created (Different ones for each site). The screen saver is a collection of jpg's of old postcards. Here are the links if you want to go there directly: For Broome Co: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nybroome/brprsent.htm For Cortland Co: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/cpresent.htm Again, just let me wish everyone a happy (and safe) holiday season. If anybody put in a query to the Cortland site in the last week or so, you might need to put it in again. For some reason, even though it looks like the mail form worked, the mail produced by the page on some of the days never reached me.... I know there is a problem because I entered one myself and it didn't come back to me. I've gone out to the site that does the mailings and set an option different and it now seems to work. So, if you put in a query, please check with me and see if I got it. Vicki

I have a photograph (8X10) taken in 1902 on the front steps of the school house in Pitcher, Chenango Co., NY. My mother wrote on the back all of the names that she knew several years ago (a few first names missing). See below for the list of surnames. The picture copies very well and would include the list of names by rows in the picture, if any researchers are interested. Since it is in a brownish tone, it copies best in color which is about $1.50, plus mailing envelope and postage. Vicki, I believe I have a complete record of the children of Reuben and Polly (Herring) Gridley. They weren't married until abt. 1814, so their oldest wouldn't have been tax age until about 1835. Deborah Gridley b. 1797 in Albany Co., NY, was the dau. of Curtis Gridley who is also believed to have settled in Virgil early.
