Does anyone know where I might find newpaper obits from the 1850's? What were the newspapers during that time period in the county? Are there indexes? Are they on microfilm? Thanks Pat Reston, VA

Dear Jeanne, My Crandall connection is very minor--a daughter of a 4th great uncle married a William Vet Crandall in Marathon, Cortland Co., NY. (His father's name was Edward James Crandall b. abt 1848 Binghamton.) However, I found a great book that highlights lots of Crandalls--even those that have not been identified as related to the title subject. It's name is ELDER JOHN CRANDALL OF RHODE ISLAND AND HIS DESCENDANTS. I'm sorry that I don't have the author's name. I failed to add it to the page I copied from the book. Hope this aids you in your search. Juanita Hurley

If anyone can figure this out, I would appreciate knowing the answer too. It might explain why Sarah Simmons is living with Asa and Sarah (Johnson) Hunt in the 1865 census. Dear list members, I am hoping someone can help me pull my pieces of information together. Here is what I know. * Solomon Johnson, son of John Johnson, was born in NY around 1838. * John Johnson died at Taycheedah, Fond du Lac, WI on 28 December 1854. Informant for the death certificate was Mahalia SIMMONS JOHNSON, John's father is George JOHNSON and Mother is Permelia BRADLEY JOHNSON. * Mahalia, and children Amy, Henry, Merrit, Mary and Martha, lived with father Isaac and mother Amy SIMMONS. Solomon JOHNSON and wife Martha lived with Aaron SIMMONS in Taycheedah in 1860. * In the 1850 Census John Johnson, 28 year old, NY born Ellen, Solomon, George, Amy and Charles are listed in dwelling 68 in Hustisford, Dodge, WI. The 51 year old Isaac, 50 year old Amy, 19 year old Aaron and a 6 year old Isaac are listed in dwelling 62. All the above, except Charles, list their birthplace as New York. * The 1840 Census New York State index lists Isaac SIMMONS in Fishkill (Dutchess), Georgetown (Madison), Clarkson (Monroe), and Parma (Monroe). The Isaac SIMMONS in Clarkson is the only 40ish Male with 40ish wife, but lists two sons 10 to 15 years old. I do not record a hit for a John Johnson in Monroe County in 1840. * A George and Permelia JOHNSON were found in the 1850 census living in Cortlandville, Cortland, NY. However, I can not find a link to this John. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Brent JOHNSON
Mark Saxby first appears on the Solon census in 1830. In 1810, he is probably still in Mass, since a Mark and James are both listed there. Couldn't find him in 1820, which is odd. However, dau Mary b. 1810, lists Mass as her birth place in the 1850 census, that makes sense. Since you just started, thought you might not have the following: The Genealogy of the Descendants of Samuel Penfield page 319 George, son of George and Hannah (Welch) Burlingham born 1805 N. Y. State and d. Solon N. Y. He m. Mary Saxby born ca 1810 in Massachusetts, dau. of Mark and Anna Saxby, as listed in our family Bible. The 1850 Census of Solon N. I have an 8X10 photograph taken in 1902 on the front steps of the school house in Pitcher (Chenango County) New York. My mother wrote on the back, all of the names that she knew several years ago (see list below). The picture copies very well and would include the list of names by rows in the picture, if any researchers are interested. Since it is in a brownish tone, it copies best in color which is about $1.00, plus mailing envelope and postage. If interested or questions, please contact me at J4777EA@aol.com. I am also after information about David H. Manrose Jr. of Freetown. He was one of the Cortland County's early tombstone carvers. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/Tombstones/CortlandCoCarvers.html here is all I know (from my web pages): "It appears that the Cortland County Carvers didn't come to the area until nearly two decades after settlement. The earliest (documented) one is David H. Manrose Jr. who lived at Freetown on the eastern edge of Cortland County. He was there in the late 1820s and died while traveling through Ohio in 1828. The style of his carving is not known and it is assumed that since he was relatively young he had not practiced the trade long. At the same time that Manrose died John Crandall, who had also been a resident of the Freetown area moved to Norwich, Chenango County where he began the carving of tombstones." Any more information on young Mr. Manrose would be greatly appreciated! Before he left for Ohio he had a nice advertisement in a Cortland area newspaper and if anyone has access to this and could scan it for me I would very much appreciate that also!
