    3. Hi Laurien, I checked all my books but, unfortunately, did not find any Babcocks. Yes, there was a baptist church in that era. The First Baptist Church of Hillsdale known in 1878 as the "East Baptist Church" according to Ellis' History of Columbia County. It was organized 28 May 1787 by Revs. John and Stephen Gano and was in existence for ninety years. In 1803 a division occurred because of a difference of opinion and 35 members withdrew and formed the "West Church." This second Baptist church members built a new church in Martindale Depot in 1854. I don't know if either church is still in existance, perhaps someone on this list does. Sorry I could not be of more help.
