    3. Hi, We all know that WILLS are kept in the County Surrogate Office, but did you know that someone must file a PETITION for the will to be probated - this petition usually (none in very early ones) has the date and place of death of the person and names all of the heirs-at-law including the married surnames of the females even if these people are not in the will. Wills that concern property can also be found in the County Clerk's Office. DEEDS can be found in the County Clerk's Office - sometimes, especially when the person didn't have a probate record, the HEIRS are listed when the land is sold. COURT RECORDS in the County Clerk's Office - when ever a person went to court the reason is listed in the court records and this includes DIVORCES. STATE CENSUS RECORDS can be found in the County Clerk's Office. MARRIAGE RECORDS - you may or may not find marriage records in the County Clerk's Office - I found the indexes and the marriage records 1908-1935 in the SCHENECTADY County Clerk's Office. CITIZENSHIP records can be found in the County Clerk's Office. Any way, if you are going to be in the County Seat of some county it would be worth your while to visit both the Surrogate's Office and the County Clerk's Office. (also ask what else the Clerk's Office may have that will help you find your ancestors). Barbara _________________________________________________________________ Don’t just search. Find.
