My father, SAMUEL HOTENE TUATEA CHASE, told me that JAMES ALVIN SHAW CHASE was in fact, a shipbuilder from California, USA. He was on his way to Australia when he became ill at sea and they set him down in Napier, NZ. All the CHASE family in New Zealand have descended from JAMES ALVIN SHAW CHASE. The line continues from California, USA to the Eastern States - among those of Maryland and Massachussetts mainly. A bit of trivia: Judge SAMUEL CHASE of Maryland is also one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Cheers.
